Russia optimistic about MIG-35’s victory in Indian Air Force tender

PTI:Russia on Thursday expressed optimism that the MiG-35 fighter jets fielded by it in the Indian Air Force’s tender for acquisition of 126 Medium Multi-Role Combat Aircraft (MMRCA) will prove an edge over its Western rivals and ultimately win the contract.

“We hope that our aircraft would be the winner,” chief of Rosoboronexport (ROE), Russia’s sole state intermediary agency for export-import of defence-related technologies and services, Anatoly Isaikin said.

“Russia is competing with top aircraft manufacturers of the US and Europe. Such tenders are carried out in several stages and takes time. We are in the middle and so far, no one has dropped out,” he said.

Isaikin said MiG-35 is an air superiority fighter capable of taking on the current fourth and prospective fifth generation combat aircraft.

“From the point of view of technological inputs it is virtually a fifth generation fighter, unmatched by any of the European fighters,” he said.

ROE has fielded the MiG-35 fighter jets developed by RAC MiG against American rivals F-16 of Lockheed Martin and F/A-18 of Boeing, France’s Rafale, Swedish JAS-39 Gripen (SAAB) and European Eurofighter Typhoon (EADS).

ROE’s exports in 2009 amounted to USD 7.4 billion of which over 50 per cent were related to fighter aircraft, Isaikin told a press conference here today.

“India, Algeria, China, Venezuela, Malaysia and Syria were among the major buyers of Russian fighters,” he said.

Under the Sukhoi deal, India is receiving kits and semi-knocked-down Su-30MKI multi-role fighter jets for assembly at HAL factories in the country.

Last year, Russia also shipped four MiG-29K naval fighters for deployment on the INS Vikramaditya (Admiral Gorshkov), which is expected to join the Indian Navy after New Delhi and Moscow settle their dispute over the cost of modernisation of the Soviet-built aircraft carrier.

I hope their aircraft is not the winner.
SH or Typhoon is the way forward.

Russian flights for this competition are heavier than the Spec.

They may get orders but not from this tender.

I think the PAK-FA flight today was a major statement. I have a gut feel Mig 35 will not go back empty handed...

They won't because they will get a new order of Mig 29Ks, Mig 35 instead is now even more unlikely. Why should IAF buy an fighter that offers mainly the same weapons as MKI and Pak Fa, but don't offer a real advantage over them? Not to mention that IAF for sure won't get into overdependance on Russian fighters and weapons, 230 MKIs, 250 FGFA, 60 Mig 29, 40 Mig 27 + 45 Mig 29Ks should be enough.

.
very true indeed eurofighter is the way forward

Plus getting such a super maneuverable aircraft IAF will learn a lot.........

But would say an 18SA offer those advantages except say reducing dependence on Russia. ??

As my prediction & geopolitical Air force MMRCA will be F18 or EF. To satisify russia we have SU30MKI, Navel MMRCA, PAK FA, FGFA & Medium transport heli. Currently russia is the top most arm supplier to india

every company has a right to be optimistic but that dosent mean the people evaluating it are felling the same high

Mig-35 is a great fighter. You all should not be surprised if it wins the contract. It is very advanced plane capable of competing with any western aircraft.

F18Sh would fit pretty good alongside MKI, because the one is geard for BVR and strikes, the other for BVR and WVR combats and we would have the best weapons from both sides. Where F18SH lacks of course is ToT, EUM, source codes, customizing...!

@ karan
1. amongst all fighers f18 is most tested mig 35 is least.
2. It has best aesa
3. Politaical advantage
4. Its ready, mip 35 wont arrive before 1017, the time fgfa comes in
5.sh 18 is frontline fighter for usn speaks volumes..

F18Sh is a big no as sancho mentioned above, we have a lot of choices and Eurofighter seem to be a best IMO

In 2004, United States Air Force Chief of Staff General John P. Jumper said after flying the Eurofighter:"I have flown all the air force jets. None was as good as the Eurofighter "
