MOSCOW, September 3 (RIA Novosti) - Russia and Syria are in talks on the delivery of at least eight MiG-31 Foxhound interceptors under a contract signed two years ago, a Russian business daily said on Thursday, citing an industry official.

Kommersant said Russia has so far denied reaching a deal with Syria on MiG-31 sales, but Damascus insisted in May on the existence of a contract worth an estimated $400-500 million.

"A couple of years ago we signed two contracts [with Syria] - one on MiG-29M and another - on MiG-31. The first is being implemented, but the MiG-31 contract has never become effective... I hope that the contract will be implemented sooner or later," Alexei Fyodorov, the head of Russia's United Aircraft Corporation (UAC), told Kommersant.

According to Kommersant, Russia's Sokol aircraft manufacturing plant started preparatory work for assembly of MiG-31 from hulls (without engines and weapons) kept in storage since 1994, when the production of the interceptors was officially discontinued.

However, the actual assembly has never materialized, the paper said.

The MiG-31 Foxhound is a two-seat supersonic interceptor aircraft developed to replace the MiG-25 Foxbat. It is equipped with two D-30F6 turbofan two-shaft engines with a common afterburner and a variable supersonic nozzle, which allow the aircraft to fly at supersonic speeds of up to Mach 2.83.

The interceptor also features unique air-to-air missiles capable of hitting targets at ranges exceeding 200 kilometers (125 miles), including aircraft with stealth capabilities, cruise missiles, and supersonic aircraft.

According to various sources, about 500 MiG-31s have been produced since production began in 1978, approximately 370 of which remain in service with the Russian Air Force.

The sales of MiG-31 aircraft to Damascus may spark criticism in the West and Israel, which consider arming Syria a threat to regional security, the Kommersant said

well i need not say much about the russian war machines but they really are beasts!!
they are always massive bodies with hard air frames, take a look at some of there attack helicopters and fighter planes,, even the tansport serise of Il76,78 look massive!
moreover look at there speeds, all of them are well above 2.3 Mach! this very Mig 31 is a old platform with a maximum speed of 2.8 mach with a structure capable to go beyond Mach 3, (the engine will take it there) only problem above Mach 3 is described as not suitable in routine tasks!!
isnt it awesome,
the may be lack in soft part when comapred to westren counter parts but the hard components are really treat to watch!

regards!

Hi,

Americans learnt a long time ago that with the invent of mach 4 plus AtoA missiles---aircraft top end speed is for VANITY only. The aircraft cannot do much except to fly straight---so good for overflight spy missions over countries like pakistan who don't have along range air defence missiles---.

Why would syria ask for them---when there are other better options available---might get a better answer if you ask a rock why is it lying on the side of the road.:devil:

.
Not to mention the engines will be screwed after few flights at Mach 3.Sryia is wasting money..Mig29 or Su-27 would be much better choice.

MiG-29 are being acquired as well according to some Russian and Israeli sources. I've been following this deal as it resurfaced and was surprised to find this out.

the Russian newspaper Kommersant added:

”...a lot of MiG-29M/M2 jets was sold to Syria as well. They are being sold abroad for the first time and are similar in their technical specifications to the MiG-35 model Russia is now offering India. The total value of the contract for the MiG-31 and MiG-29M/M2 aircraft is estimated at $1 billion.”

Here's what some well placed Jews had to say about the MiG 31 :

The four MiG-31E fighter jets that Russia will deliver to Syria will be without offensive capabilities and used for intelligence gathering alone, according to reports that reached Jerusalem from Moscow this week.

According to these reports, Russia did not sell more planes to the Syrians for the simple reason that Damascus does not have the ability to pay for any more. The reports said that two of the planes would be operational, and the other two would be purchased for "cannibalization" purposes, amid a Syrian realization that Russia would not provide effective "after-sale service," and that these planes would be used for "spare parts."

Foxhound is an interceptor aircraft rather than a Fighter its main role was to engage and intercept US nuke tipped missiles and high altitude bombers, as great speeds are critical in intercepting fast moving targets. So there is no reason Russians would design a mach 1.5 to mach 2 fighters. It has a handsome ammo load and very very capable radar to match its role.In my bet the best interceptor along with Tomcat

yes they make very nice easy to see RCS values on an Israeli radar.

MiG-31 is designed for defensive missions & for interception, only a stupid will make it go for offensive missions, it has almost zero maneuverability compared to IAF F-16s & F-15, in WVR its death warrent is signed

Anyways i think if we consider scenario b/w F-15 & MiG-31, MiG-31 is much faster than an F-15 & would be able to engage/disengage from BVR combat quite quickly, it can simply climb away & fly beyond Mach 2.8 to get away from its foes in the event of disengagement :bounce:
But i still dont understand the logic behind this deal, the platforms like MiG-29 & su-27( may be su-30) can serve the Syrians pretty well, i hope that some one challenges Israelis in air coz uptil now they have been scoring goals without any opponent :disagree:

Why don't Syrians buy JF-17 from us? Its pretty affordable ;)

I think we need to get our required numbers inducted first and then consider exporting...will take time

Also i do not know the level of training and skills that Syrian Airforce has ensured in its ranks...last time they did extremely bad against the Israelis...remember that it was PAF pilots who used the same machines and downed Israeli Jets...
Maybe them acquiring JF-17 may not be a dream come true if their standard has not improved...it may result in the first JF-17 being brought down...

Anyways, lets hope they have matured in their ACM skills and group tactics to enable a better showing next time.

Correct....
But, if we sell them or any other nation our JF-17 thunder, we can make money(foreign exchange).

Although, Russia might get angry
