What's new

Rs 80,000 crore worth defence projects cleared, 6 submarines to be built in India

We should, even if Arihant is still in it's early stages and far away from being ready developed. But with that and the know how we gain with Scorpenes we should be able to develop own SSKs soon too. Maybe that's even the long term plan of IN, to add 6 more Scorpenes and then go for an indigenous SSK, but then again the new government should had simply selected DCNS as the winner of the P75I and not scrap everything and start all over again, only to get privat shipyards in.

How so? They (Mazogon) are responsible for the first 6 and are not able to participate even in the follow order as it seems, so where should they feel pressure?
And if we select a totally different sub, it gets even worse, because it increases logistical problems in IN and all the know how we gained from the Scorpene has no benefit anymore.

No, I heard the news that German and Russian want to jump in P-75 A/I , dont know many names. First the in 2005 MoD did the disaster selecting Scorpene instead of Type 212/214. It strained the MDL, which created a production line for German, they have to convert it to French.

But now if we go, again German and Russian, dont know, what would happen, then its much better that we give contract to L&T for designing and manufacturing new sub.

That's not correct, our U209 subs are German and we licence produced them back then, but because of corruption issues the optional production was scrapped and we lost the know how over the years. The lack of this know how of producing subs, caused much of the problems in manufacturing the Scorpenes now, since we simply didn't had the shipyards with the necessary know how anymore, but there was no converting from German to French subs or so.

Okey, but it seems, but now this is the real problem. We cant go back to German or Russian.

I heard another news some year back that there was another reason for Scorpene delay. That in 2005 MDL has the capability to manufacture new sub, but in 2006 MoD awarded the contract for Arihant hull to L&T.

They hired all the engineers and great welders from MDL, with high perks and privileges, that causes work force problem in MDL.

We can, but it's like starting from scratch again. If L&T for example teams up with the Germans and win the tender, L&T has to learn from scratch how to build this subs, while simple addition of 6 more Scorpenes to the Mazogon production line, would had been simpler and faster.

Not sure about that, but now consider L&T doesn't win and another privat shipyards gets the deal, where do they get the experienced engineers from and if they won't get them, will we face production problems again?

Ok, but even why for that. Even MDL has not the experience to build its own class for IN requirements, didnt they got enough experience after building Scorpene?

We can deal with France on AIP, Battery and Engine, if they refuse in preference of Scorpene. Then we can go with germans or Russian.

They didn't had it, but surely gained some now and then there is L&T, so why choose one of them, when they could work together to develop an indigenous submarine to gather, combining their know how? That's what happens in the joint development of DRDO and TATA for a wheeled IFV right? Imo that's even the way to go, to get the privat industry not only be competiting in basic licence productions as an alternative to government owned companies, but that they commit themselfs to indigenous developments with government owned partners. At the end, they all are Indians and should follow the same aim, of supporting our forces with indigenous arms and techs.

...Making Submarines ingeniously is a bold move..I hope it is completed within 10 yesrs..

Good and pragmatic decision to involve Private Shipyards in manufacturing SSKs. L&T seems to be handling submarine manufacturing better than MDL and hence deserves a chance to prove its mettle as primary Submarine manufacturer. MDL's inability to plan and absorb the know how has hit IN hard and this never ending saga has to end.

Selecting Dornier ( NG probably) is another laudable decision as we are manufacturing it on our own and with slight help this aircraft will a long way.

Wonder if Spike deal was so urgent to clear now. DRDO has been developing Man portable ATGM and it should enter trials soon. Co-development of Next Gen. Javelin was very interesting and should have been looked upon. ( Damler-Basha effect..? )

Regarding saras its still not got IOC and there is already a fixed order for it. Dornier is in production and is a tested platform.
BTW this monthly DAC clearances are really quickening the pace of acquisitions. 5 months comparable to years of UPA.

So you prefer it over an indigenously developed Saras?

Can anyone please tell me which armoured personnel carrier is mentioned in the clearance today and for which unit ?

BMP2 were mentioned in some reports, which again hints on stopgaps for FICV.

Better use that money for reducing poverty and building toilets all over india .

Why don't you use the money you spent on Nukes to reduce your povery and take care of the Polio??? Acc to UN's latest review we're working well to reduce the poverty on the other hand Pakistan's poverty status is getting worsts than India's day by day..

Yes... Saras is nowhere to be seen and this is serving the forces well.
