The annual joint South Korean and U.S. exercises dubbed "Key Resolve" last month for the first time practiced deploying more than 100,000 South Korean troops in North Korea to stabilize the country in case of regime collapse.

The two countries "practiced deploying a large contingent of troops to bring stability in the North in case of civil war in the wake of sudden change there," a government source said on Thursday. "Seoul and Washington practiced preparing for sudden change in the North for the first time during last year's Key Resolve drill, but this was the first time we went on the assumption that South Korean troops would be deployed in the North."

This year's exercise supposed that civil war breaks out due to conflict between hawks and doves in the North Korean military. It envisioned deploying several South Korean Army corps south of Pyongyang to bring hardliners under control and stabilize the North.

When North Korea was complaining about the ROK and the US drilling for an invasion of North Korea they were actually correct.

During the annual Key Resolve drill held last month, the ROK and the US drilled based on a scenario of North Korean Civil War similar to Libya and Syria, upon which the ROK and the US would immediately send in 100K+ ground troops, identify the pro-South factions and crush the opposition military faction by force and successfully occupy North Korea.

So the ROK's official policy is to invade North Korea at the first available opportunity, be it a surprise attack or a internal power struggle/popular revolt and end Kim Dynasty's tyranny.

TOKYO : China has detected deadly nerve gas at its border with North Korea and suspects an accidental release inside the secretive state, a Japanese news report said Friday.

The Chinese military is strengthening its surveillance activities after detecting the highly virulent sarin gas in November last year and in February in Liaoning province, the Asahi Shimbun newspaper reported, citing anonymous sources from the Chinese military.

Sarin gas, which was developed in Germany before World War I, was used in the deadly 1995 nerve gas attack on the Tokyo subway by a doomsday cult.

The Chinese special operations forces found 0.015-0.03 microgrammes of the gas per cubic metre when they were conducting regular surveys while there were winds from the direction of North Korea, the report said.

China suspects that there were some experiments or accidents in its neighbouring country, it said.

North Korea kidnaps or shoots Chinese citizens, shoots at Chinese fishing boats, blow Sarin gas into China, and China won't protest.

As long as there is both Chinese and Russian support, N.Korea will survive but with a few bruises. I can't see China and Russia sending troops to fight.

Russia won't. Russia actually wants Kim's regime gone because a slew of mega projects with ROK is blocked by North Korea, such as Trans-Siberian Railway Linkage, Gas Pipeline, Electric Grid Connection to burrow ROK's extra power in the winter, development of Russian Far East with Korean money, etc. Heck, Russia has an arms sales office in Seoul, but not in Pyongyang nowadays. Russia even offered to forgive $13 billion is Soviet-era debts in exchange for a passage to ROK but North Korea rufused.

It is China alone that would attempt to intervene.

I admire Lee Myung Bak as a strong leader compared to the pacifist leaders South Korea had till date. Once we have Modi in power in 2014, Indo-Korean relations would go to new heights with two strong leaders.

at this moment, you cant call it civil war. there are two seperate countries the south and north korea. more, the two are not parts of the uncle sam, so it's not civil war. it's international war.

The US, major EU states, and the UN coalition forces that participated in the original Korean War does not recognize North Korea. North Korea is simply considered a rebel force within the ROK.

can we use this opportunity to extend our coastline to Japan sea?

Aside from the problem of terrible losses to be suffered on PLA's part in such an attempt, the legal problem is that China has recognized North Korea as a sovereign state while the ROK, the US, and the rest of UN forces did not. So the ROK and the UN occupation of North Korea is legal since North Korea is not a sovereign state under their laws and they may enter North Korea under the ROK's permission, while the China cannot occupy North Korea because North Korea is a sovereign state under the Chinese law.

you can occupy most of the north korea lands meanwhile, china prefer to occupy some of it, we just want the northeast part of north korea so that we can ship our products by japan sea.

Only if you want to fight against Uncle Sam and NATO. I'm not sure if it would be a good idea for China to send her troops into Korea. I'm sure the Chinese leadership knows there are other ways to fight a war.
