Prime minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday called the displaced Rohingyas and stranded Pakistanis as burden for Bangladesh, saying they are putting pressure on country's economy.

"Three years have already passed after Rohingyas influx in Bangladesh and it's a burden for us," she said.

The prime minister said this while newly appointed ambassador of the Netherlands to Bangladesh Anne Gerard Van Leeuwen paid a courtesy call on her at her official Ganabhaban residence in the capital.

She added that the Rohingyas are also destroying the environment and forest resources of Cox's Bazar.

She also talked about the stranded Pakistanis, saying, "These (Rohingyas and stranded Pakistanis) are creating economic pressure on Bangladesh."

PM's press secretary Ihsanul Karim briefed the newsmen after the meeting.

Talking about the Rohingya issue, the Netherlands envoy apprised of his
talking about the issue with the refugees and NGO activists.

He expressed his realization that the solution is rooted in sending back the Rohingyas to their native land Myanmar.

Sheikh Hasina appreciated the Netherlands contribution to her country’s development and formulate the Delta Plan-2100.

To this end, she recalled Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s stance to develop Bangladesh through land reclamation like the Netherlands.

Recalling her last visit to the Netherlands the prime minister said that she was overwhelmed to see production and preservation of agricultural items using the Green House system.

“We can also adopt the system as our country is an agro-based one,” she said.

The Dutch envoy said they are eager to share their experience to this end.

Sheikh Hasina said her government is doing the river dredging in the country as part of the measures to increase water reservoirs to preserve water.

The prime minister said that they are converting the Cox’s Bazar airport into an international airport to attract more tourists in the world's longest unbroken sandy sea-beach.

She said her government is setting up 100 economic zones at different parts the country to attract more domestic and foreign investment and thus spur the country’s overall development.

Dutch ambassador Anne Gerard Van Leeuwen appreciated Bangladesh's development under the visionary and dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The envoy said that he had travelled Bangladesh by air and witnessed the landscape of the country which he said similar to his own country.

Later, Ambassador of Nepal in Bangladesh Banshidhar Mishra paid a farewell call on prime minister Sheikh Hasina at her official Ganabhaban residence in the capital.

The prime minister said Bangladesh is developing the Syedpur Airport as a regional one and Nepal can use the airport.

She also offered Nepal to use Mongla and Paira ports.

The prime minister also recalled with gratitude Nepal's support during the War of Liberation.

PM's Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim briefed newsmen after the call on.

The Nepalese envoy has sought cooperation from Bangladesh for development of their agriculture sector.

He also praised Bangladesh’s overall development saying that they are moved with its development.

The Nepalese envoy thanked the prime minister as Nepal always gets Bangladesh’s support in their needs and recalled Bangladesh’s medical assistance after the earthquake hit their country.

He thanked the Bangladesh prime minister on behalf of his country's president and prime minister as she sent Haribhanga Mangoes.

Ambassador-at-Large Mohammad Ziauddin and principal secretary Ahmad Kaikaus were present at the meetings.

I think Climate Change is stressing Bangladesh more then those people.... Half of Bangladesh will be under water in approx. 50 years.

Everyone was against letting rohynga in. Hasina let them in. Everyone asked for a stronger Air Force, she stalled on them for 12 years now. Now don’t blame them for economic pressure because you wanted to be mother of humanity. Pfft

What is the issue with Rohyngas? They are your Bengali cousins from Myanmar. Correct?

Aren't Rohingya's closer to Bengalis than Indian Muslims from Assam, UP & Bihar?

.
It's all stupid politics at this point. Why don't Bangladesh provide an airlift for the hundred of thousands of stateless Bengalis in Sindh first.

.
It does in Pakistan's context. All the Bengalis in Pakistan arrived post independence and were Bangladeshi citizeins.

If I am guessing correctly, these people all live in the slums in a Karachi area called "Machhli" colony or some such name?

I have seen YT videos where they are claiming that they could not get integrated into mainstream Pakistani culture despite their wishes. I think Imraan Khan sb. promised them ID cards or something and they don't have it yet. Very poor and destitute people, who left Bangladesh because of Anti-AL political beliefs. I don't think current Bangladesh govt. will allow them back as they will be a security threat. Very sad in between situation.

Biharis in Bangladesh - case is different. Like others have said here, some older Biharis honestly believe that they are Pakistani citizens, as they migrated to EAST PAKISTAN prior to 1971 and after 1971, refused Bangladeshi citizenship. However I believe the 3rd and 4th generations can speak Bengali and have been integrated into Bangladeshi mainstream culture as fully functioning members of society. You could not tell these people apart from Bangladeshis.

I am surprised Hasina is saying this now - because she promised the people living in Bihari colony that they'd get new high rise housing, you guys might remember the thread on it a few months ago.

No and No. Their bloodline is totally different from even people in Chittagong. Their language, culture, food all are different.

Why do they move as refugees in Pakistan instead of being refugees in Bangladesh as an interim step until they get citizenship in Pakistan?

Do you think it is normal to have people in both Pakistan and Bangladesh with no citizenship from either country?

I am left wondering why Indians are getting involved in this, as it is something for Bangladeshis and Pakistanis to resolve.

Unless India wants to host either groups of refugees, it is better for Indians not to offer "Nosey Auntie" and scheming-Khala suggestions, second-guessing Bangladeshis.

If stranded people in Pakistan and Bangladesh want to immigrate and take citizenship of India, I will whole heartedly support it.

.
Okay so let's make adjustment to my previous proposal. Let's swap everyone who came here after the creation of Bangladesh, and are not citizens of Pakistan, for the Biharis in BD.

Pakistan’s law allow people from Bangladesh to claim Pakistani citizenship within 7 years of the separation means cut off date is 1978 not 1971. Most Bengalis those who are in Pakistan claim they were there before 1978 perhaps before1971.

The claim that Pakistan makes of 3 million Bengalis went to Pakistan illegally is simply not true as it’s not feasible to travel 1000s of km and cross Indian border twice specially due to tight security in Pakistani border.

.
throw the effing 3 million haamkhors back to their country and bring back our stranded brothers and sisters.

India did not have strong border fences either with Pakistan or Bangladesh then. The Indo-Pak border was built in the 1990s after the of the start of Kashmir insurgency and Taliban coming to power in Afghanistan. The fencing with Bangladesh was only done recently.

there was no tight security even in 1980 sir fence was started in 2003 . these people were not only came by land borders also by sea and air too . let me remind you sir that pakistan and BD were connected by all lines of connection . and for better understanding watch some videos and documentaries and get the info what they themself claim .

pakistani citizenship law for bengalis is clear as mentioned

Citizenship by MigrationIf a person migrates from Indian territory before 1 January 1952, with the intention of permanently residing then they may receive citizenship. If he is a man, his wife and children may get Pakistani citizenship as well.

Certain Persons to lose and others to retain citizenshipRegarding the times before and after 16 December 1971 and people residing in what was previously East Pakistan
  • One is no longer a citizen if he/she is voluntarily residing in or migrated to the area now known as Bangladesh on 16 December 1971
  • One is still a citizen if he/she voluntarily stayed or moved to West Pakistan on 16 December 1971
BD is in a good location. BD does not have any military threats.
why someone use military force if he/she can achieve goals without using force?
