Soccer is not just the most popular sport in the world for humans — robots are also competing to score goals in the seventh RoboCup Iran Open, held days ago at Qarvin Azad University in Tehran.

A team from the U.S. won gold in soccer 3D simulation, and a team from China won gold in rescue agent simulation, according to Iran's Press TV.

Teams from the Islamic Republic made its citizens proud winning gold in the rest of the 19 categories, the English-language news agency reported.

RoboCup competitions started in 1997 with the goal of promoting robotics and artificial intelligence.

The only human interaction in the soccer matches are by the referees, while robots sweat it out on the field.

The final international games with hundreds of participating teams from around the world will be held in Mexico this June.

RoboCup Federation's ultimate goal is-by mid-21st century-to have a fully autonomous robotic team, complying with FIFA rules, face off against the winner of the most recent (Human?) World Cup.
