no matter how better they get but they still answer to americans(no offense to japanese people)
there are several other things if you want to take them into account like nuke subs,aircraft carrier and experience.
chinese have more nuke subs then japanese
india have aircraft carrier operating experience and again PLAN is far better than jmsdf in terms of numerical superiority and in some places technology also.

For Japan they need a powerful navy to defend themselves , that what they got.

oh!, did you mean Diaoyu/Senkaku dispute between Japan and China ? , if then , yes United State did , initially it was more bilateral between Japan and China , with US backdoor diplomacy , look like this failed and with the escalating tension between the both, US had to go public with a statement saying , it will defend those island as part of Japanese territory. after which both China and Japan claimed down.

there is important caveat here , currently the islands are disputed and China and Japan are battling it out in front of UN , if Japan wins or China attacks before resolution then the above defense becomes plausible.

I believe , the US can rally its public in defense of Japan , if its attacked this is because there is treaty obligation , if the United state run from battle , its legitimacy and superpower status is dead and other nations with defense treaty will get anxious , so for the sake of future generation it will go to war.

Alliance are difficult to make , and not made lightly between countries.

An historical example is Britain and France entry into world war ; due to Nazi Germany attack on Poland.

they did nothing in kargil war to help pakistan instead they ordered them to retreat.

china is way too much risky to go and have an adventure with even for uncle sam

for the bold part-it's a nuclear bomb sir not some fire cracker.it takes time to build one.even advanced countries like japan will take atleast a year or two to make a sophisticated nuke bomb.

US does not have defense treaty with Pakistan , also remember defense treaty is mutual , you cant start war without alliance agreeing , If Japan go crazy and start war with anyone , the US can nullify the treaty obligation.

China has "no first use " of nukes , also if there is a war with US , China wont dare to use it , due retaliation , between a 2 nuclear state only a loser will launch the nukes.
