The shortfall in dry thrust is about 6 percent and shortfall in after burner is about 12 percent. It was indeed close to design intent.

DRDO has earlier released a report on the same. But it seems the report go in depth on the reasons.

NEW DELHI: So what if it cannot power fighter jets as of now, it's perfectly suitable for combat drones, warships and possibly even trains! Or, so the never-say-die Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) is now proclaiming as far as its Kaveri engine is concerned.

DRDO officials say the Kaveri aero-engine, which incidentally is over 22 years in the making by now with a sanctioned cost of Rs 2,893 crore, can power unmanned combat aerial vehicles (UCAVs) because they "do not require the kind of higher thrust" needed for the indigenous Tejas LCA (light combat aircraft).

"Nine prototypes of Kaveri engine and four prototypes of Kaveri Core (Kabini) engines have been developed with over 2,000 hours of testing...the engine is proven with almost 80 kilonewtons (kN) of thrust now, which is enough for our UCAVs (Tejas requires 90 kN)," said an official.

The thrust without after burners were supposed to be 52 Kn but it seems its only 49 while with afterburners were 80Kn but its is infact only 70 kN..

Nope its the nexus of lazy b@st@rd babus and so called scientists used to unaccounted and unrestricted flow of money. The longer a project will stretch better 4 them.

The variants programme for navy, drones are still on... maybe for that .... Snecma-Kaveri JV is also still on ,with GTRE working on low pressure components and Snecam on high end technologies, it is learnt.
 
i suppose if LCA is to continue as a project, they will opt for GE engine

India’s indigenously-built Kaveri engine for military aircraft has successfully passed a series of tests on a Russian Il-76 aircraft recently using it as Flight Test Bed (FTB) at a Russian facility.

“The recently conducted tests were a significant step towards operationalisation of Kaveri engine.

“A Russian Il-76 transporter was used as the FTB to conduct 11 successful trials totalling over 20 hours till April,” Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) spokesperson said here Monday.

Elaborating on using Il-76 as FTB, he said, “Kaveri was replaced with one of the four engines of the Il-76. The tests were carried out up to 12 km maximum altitude and a maximum forward speed of 0.7 Mach and under different operating conditions.”

Developed by Bangalore-based Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE) under DRDO, the engine recently passed ground tests before being transported to Gromov Flight Research Institute in Russia for simulated flights and FTB trials.

So far, India has spent over $455 million in last two decades to develop the engine which was first designed to fly the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas. A major setback occurred when it could not generate desired thrust to make the aircraft airborne.

Airforce chief has made it clear earlier that GE variant might even feature in AMCA project if the indigenous or the JV one is not ready by the time expected.

ya india's engine development has been plagued by problems & dealys ,but india really want to be an indigeniuos aerospace power she has to develop his own engine.No other alternative
 
India's negotiation with a French firm for developing a production version of its indigenous Kaveri engine for its military aircraft is in the final stage of cost negotiations, Defence Minister A.K. Antony told the Rajya Sabha Wednesday.

Negotiations with French firm Snecma are being conducted by a tender purchase committee with members from the Defence Research and Development Organisation, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, the Indian Air Force, the Indian Navy and defence finance department.

"It is proposed to develop production version Kaveri (K10) engine on co-design and co-development basis with Snecma of France. The technical evaluation for this proposal has been completed. Tender purchase committee is negotiating the commercial aspects," Antony said in a written reply during question hour.

He said so far, nine prototypes of Kaveri engines and four prototypes of Kaveri Core (Kabini) engines have been developed, and about 1,975 hours of testing have been conducted on Kaveri and its core engines at ground and altitude conditions.

Kaveri engine prototype (K9) was integrated with an IL-76 aircraft at Gromov Flight Research Institute in Russia. After adequate engine ground runs, the scientists had successfully completed the taxi trials and the maiden flight test of Kaveri engine with IL-76 aircraft for over an hour on Nov 3 last year, followed by three more flight tests.

"These flight tests covered a six km altitude and a speed of 0.6 mach (0.6 times the speed of sound)," he added.

India had sanctioned the Kaveri engine development project on Mar 30, 1989, with a probable date of completion in December 1996 and a cost of Rs.382.81 crore. The project cost was later revised to Rs.2,839 crore.

Some of the major reasons for time and cost overruns are first-time development of an engine, lack of skilled manpower in engine manufacturing, enhancement in the scope of project during development, lack of infrastructure for engine manufacture testing and component/system level testing within the country.

"Flying test bed trials was not originally included as a milestone in the project. Engine and component failure during testing, which is inevitable in these kind of projects, resulted in changes in design and material based on various reviews," Antony said.

Foreign manufacturing agencies too showed less priority for the project in view of minimum order quantity, that is the production order quantity from other engine houses.

US sanctions imposed in 1998 (after India's nuclear tests in Pokhran under the National Democratic Alliance regime) affected the delivery of critical systems and components, he added.
