The Indian government has cleared a $2.5 billion deal for the country's army to buy the Medium Range Surface to Air Defense Missile (MR-SAM) system from Israeli Aerospace Industries (IAI), another step towards the signing of the deal with the Israeli company, Indian media reported on Thursday.

The MR-SAM system, jointly developed by India’s Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in close collaboration with IAI, is a land-based configuration of the long-range surface-to-air missile (LRSAM) or Barak-8 naval air defense system.

Able to shoot down enemy aircraft at a range of 50-70 kilometers, it will help to protect India from enemy aircraft and will replace the country’s aging air defense systems.

Each MR-SAM system includes a command and control system, tracking radar, missiles and mobile launcher systems. The missiles, which can be fired in single or ripple firing modes from a vertical position, are launched in canister configuration, and the launcher will have eight canisterized missiles in two stacks. The system also features an advanced radio frequency (RF) seeker and can determine if the identified target is a friend or if it belongs to an enemy.

According to India Today, the Indian Army “will induct over five regiments of the MR-SAM missile which will have around 40 firing units and over 200 missiles of the system.”

The delivery of the first system will begin within 72 months of the signing of the contract and will be deployed for operations by 2023.

Following successful tests of the system in July, Joseph Weiss, IAI's President and CEO, said "MRSAM Air & Missile Defense System is a cutting edge, innovative system, that once again has proven its advanced capabilities against a variety of threats. The joint development and the extensive cooperation between the industries in both countries, is a testimonial to the strong partnership between the two nations. IAI is proud to lead this impressive cooperation and is highly obligated to its continuing success."

India and Israel are also jointly developing similar systems for the Indian Air Force and Navy.

India was reported by SIPRI to be the world's largest importer of major arms in 2012-16, accounting for 13 percent of the global total - far greater than regional rivals China and Pakistan.

"With no regional arms control instruments in place, states in Asia continue to expand their arsenals," said Pieter Wezeman, senior researcher with the SIPRI Arms and Military Expenditure Program, adding that "while China is increasingly able to substitute arms imports with indigenous products, India remains dependent on weapons technology from many willing suppliers, including Russia, the US, European states, Israel and South Korea."

Israel has been supplying India with various weapons systems, missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles over the last few years, making India one of Israel’s largest buyers of military hardware.

Over the last five years defense trade between the two countries has averaged annual sales worth over $1 billion.

This year Israel and India are celebrating 25 years of bilateral diplomatic ties, with Indian Prime Minister Narenda Modi expected to undertake the historic first visit by an Indian PM to visit Jerusalem this upcoming summer to highlight the growing bilateral relationship.

Will this be integrated with the S400 by India as part of a multi-tiered SAM protection suite?

I can talk only for Israel, where it's multi layer missile shield is getting a newly made interception center tasked to control Arrow 3, Arrow 2, David Sling, And maybe Iron Dome in the near future.
Also Barak 8, C Dome are linked to the interception center.

Very impressive. Not to go off topic, but with all this defense and capability, would it be too much to implement the two-state solution and give the Palestinian's their nationhood while keeping your main cities, etc.?

RE India, I was just asking because India spent a multi-billion dollar amount on the S400 deal recently too...

We paid them for the devolopment of b8,now again paying and purchasing.

Yes.

There is also a VLRSAM being developed by DRDO. More range than Barak 8. Will fall in between Barak 8, S-series.

QR SAM, outside and domestic, will follow the armor, also posted in static positions. Akash Mark 2 with seeker, little bit more range will join as well.

That might be it for future ground based SAM inductions.

We don't mind them to have a two-state solution somewhere in Pakistan.
You like them so much? So take them and feed them.

Why not where they are now? The occupation is illegal under intl law / UN Resolutions.

Despite being a developing country, we are hosting millions of refugees already... and now we're going way off topic!

This system looks pretty good --- Israel's allocation of resources towards specific threats has always been strong.

What else we can do?
We don't have begging bowls like Pakistan

You're the world's biggest receiver of US economic assistance (followed closely by Israel) in absolute terms.

Fuсk the intl law and the UN Resolutions altogether. Do you want some Israeli territory? Come and take it.

Despite the present realities, time and G-d are not on your side Zionist.

G-d is justice no matter what religion is practiced. His post was that of anger and spite not justice.

Regardless, the manipulative and self serving agendas of the current Israeli government and its right wing constituents are not fair and just. They unfortunately will enjoy 4 years of a moral vacuum that is the Trump administration. I am predicting massive shifts in the realities on the ground. Trump will be the best friend Israel has ever had indeed.

However, man plans and plots but never forget G-d is the best of planners.
