Religions must be Chinese in orientation: official

Religions in China must adapt themselves to the situation in China and must be Chinese in orientation, a senior Chinese official said at a press conference on Saturday.

“The United Front Work Department of the CPC Central Committee has provided active guidance to religions so that they can adapt themselves to socialist society… that religions in China must be Chinese in orientation,” Zhang Yijiong, executive vice minister of the department, told reporters on the sidelines of the 19th National Party Congress on Saturday.

Religions should adapt themselves to the times and human environment, and achieve localization, so that it could survive, Zhang said, adding that they “need to work hard to use socialist core values to lead their development in our country, with Chinese values to nurture religious culture.”

Zhang said that they have also faithfully implemented the CPC Central Committee’s strategies on the governance of Tibet and Xinjiang and relentlessly fought against secessionism, which safeguard the national unity, ethnic solidarity and social stability.

On the Dalai Lama’s visit to some countries, Zhang said that the Dalai Lama is a political figure, who has disguised himself as a religious figure and wants to separate the Tibet Autonomous Region from the motherland.

“Some politicians in some countries met with the Dalai Lama, which hurt the Chinese people’s feelings and broke their promise to the Chinese government … China firmly opposes [this conduct] … We hopes some countries and politicians speak and act prudently,” Zhang said.

China is guiding the sinicization of Tibetan Buddhism and hopes it can draw the essence of Chinese culture, which also caters to the needs of the development of Tibetan Buddhism, Zhang said.

it is understandable. every society wants to preserve its own tradition and is naturally against incoming influence, especially the powerful one like a religion.

If religion was a purely private matter, with no involvement from international politics, then it should remain an individual matter.

However that is not the case. For Catholicism the power base is in the Vatican, for Protestantism the power base is in the USA, etc. Nations use religion as a political weapon, and the world we see today is a result of that. Religious politics is more dangerous than guns or bombs.

The Chinese should learn from Islam, and have a lot to learn from Islam. After the fall of comunism, peoples morals and values plumeted. So their response has been to push Budism, and Daoism, hoping to replace the virtues of comunism, but that is not likely to get you anywhere as you can see with Taiwan, and Hong Kong. The only thing they can become are pupets for the west. Budism, and Daoism wont save you from western decadence as it hasn't done so for HK, or TW. On the other hand, some of the most brilliant civilizations have been Muslim, ie Persia, Arabia, Egypt, Otoman, and even India's most valuable eras have been Islamic in nature. As far as I can see, some of the least decadent countries are Islamic, and they have championed family values much more than Daoist/Budist HK&TW where family values have faded away and women are loose. Even when you visit the Islamic parts of China, the people seem more civilized, especially when you compare them to Shanghai, and Guangzhou where crime is up, and family values are down. Most western historians will not argue that Greece and Rome couldn't have made it without technology acquired from Muslim countries.

Christianity, however, is likely to bring trouble to China, and pretty much has dating back to the Qing.

LOL you were saying Shanghai and Guangzhou are less civilized than Xinjiang? Your so called brilliant civilizations like Persia, Arabia and Egypt, where are they today?

Fact is there are no Islamic countries today where other people want to move into. It's a joke to even compare with HK or Taiwan, much less look down on them. Japan practices Shinto/Buddhism and they are probably the most well-mannered and civic-minded nation in the world. Sorry but Islam isn't compatible for East Asia.

Please don't feed trolling. Japan is FAR FROM civilized, everybody have different view on how it's civilized. High income not necessarily equal to be civilized. Germany and Japan committed most barbaric war crime when they were considered 'very civilized' during WWII war. Islam do have its golden age although Muslim encounter big trouble in their society in modern era. I believe they will eventually walk over their hardness although I can't tell when.

BTW SG is not East Asia either.

Exactly, Japan and Germany committed huge war crimes during WW2. So much for being civilized.

Being rich does not make one a civilized person.

WW2 was more than 70 years ago and the rest of the world have moved on except East Asia. I judge what I see today, not by some events which happened long ago. Should I judge today's China based on Mao? Germany based on Hitler?

I did not claim SG is in East Asia.

Sounds fair and complicated as well.

I cannot work out the maths behind it but no harm in trying

Some of your people clearly do.

Sorry but Islam isn't compatible for East Asia.

Tell that to Indonesia and Malaysia.

Religion is declining amongst the educated folk

Not exactly, Islam is the fastest growing religion across the planet, especially Salafi Islam.

Fact is there are no Islamic countries today where other people want to move into.

You've never been to the Gulf have you?

Tell that to Indonesia and Malaysia.

They are in Southeast Asia.

You've never been to the Gulf have you?

Most of the foreigners there are either guest workers from South Asia or Western expats living in their expat bubble. They aren't moving there permanently or mingling with the locals.
