Recognize Chinese Civilizational Superpower: US scholar

Lets get real all the Chinese are great at is shell games and putting together other countries technology = manufacturing ( see: Foxcon). Buy a Chinese product, its nice and shiny on the shell. take it home, its goes kaput in less amount of days that its price. ( try it, but $9.99 Chinese product, it will work effortlessly for 9 days ) . The same goes for its aircraft carrier... it's a shell that is nice and shiny but its interior is always kept a secret because it is low caliber.

China is the only nation that expects people to buy into the propaganda that it has all this latest stuff ( mind you NO engine to power their aircrafts yet), today and can compete with western technology.

as Chinese military said" We are 20 years behind technology compared to the US". Which makes them have the first cell phone that is almost 12 inches tall and 1/2 pound heavy... If they can't steal it, they can't make/ compete with it.

I read an article some time ago in which its said that no country can reach the power of US for atleast another 100 years....afterall they have 700+ bases around the world including Diego Garcia (2500 miles from India)

Chinese people are more pragmatic and frugal when it come to spending wasteful money. So she is unlikely to develop a US style of military powerhouse. She probably just want a strong enough defense force to protect her borders and littoral waters. A deterrent capability is crucial in this hazardous world.

So once these spending reach her desired goals we will see her military budgets taper down to miniscule of less than 1%.

lol, buddy

common sense doesn't belong in this thread.

Alll hail our new Chinese overlords :yahoo:
In some sense, I agree with you...LoL.
But note there are a looooot of Chinese people. Most of them are hardworking and rational. Some of them...Well, enjoy bluffing real/unreal achievements which has little relationship to them in internet. It'd be crazy to judge China by reading these crazy posts...

Does China have a truly global Navy yet? How about technologically controlling the skies and space? Is the yuan freely convertible?

All of these things need to happen first. Any thoughts on how long these will take?
1.No, and I don't think China is going to build a global Navy. China shows only interests on regional influence. At least the currcent government claims China won't seek to become a global "leader" as US. And they hope there is no such "leader".
2.As for technology, common sense is that China may be 10-20 years behind US, though its development speed is fast.
3.China is putting effort in promoting the regional recoginition of Yuan. But I think a common Asian currency like euro makes more sense. But consider the influence of US in this region... It is hardly a choice.

China seeks power balancing through building a multi-polar world. And it shows only interests in becoming as one of those polars.
Let's hope, there won't be a "global leader" any more.

oh come on, whether its Singapore or Shanghai, certain Chinese people LOVE wasting money! Prada, LV, Gucci, you name it, the more expensive and useless, the more people buy. It gets better the more inland and north you go. Southeast China, and the rest of China, have a few sharp cultural differences.

people are more similar than you think. Chinese generals and US generals are similar too. Both want big funding for their military-industrial complexes and both are not afraid to strongarm civilian governments over it.

You make some very good points. My compliments for such a well-thought out response.

Those people who spend on such luxury items are young and newly rich and they are really minority compares to the huge Chinese population. And with that population, any spending in one sector usually blow out of proportion.

I don't know what the is saving rate in China, but if you take East Asia's about 40% saving rate as a guide, China wouldn't be far off. The United States, a big spender, had a negative saving rate a few year back.

So China will always be a saver, if she can, compares to the United States.

True! Chinese love spending money, but we spend within our means. We won't take out a loan to buy a flatscreen TV (as I've seriously seen Americans do).

being a saver doesn't means china won't spend money in military, japanese used to have a high saving rate too,but they could spend 40% of their gdp as military budget.
And more importantly, most of chinese don't consider military budget as "wasteful money",it's ridiculous.

Don't worry, CCP isn't some big saver in military expenditure, if you believe that China official military expenditure, then you are just as naive as the rest. :coffee:

every country is hiding their true military budget,if you think only china doing this, then you are as naive as the rest.

That's right, US also has many hiding budget. For example, her space program simply doesn't count as the fund for the military expenditure.

However, the official figure of the military budget is just some playing number for the political purpose, who has more money, so who will spend more, it is logical.

I didn't say China shouldn't spend on her military now. In fact I'm a hawk when come to her military spending as I posted before in another thread. I believe China should spend around 3% of her GDP to catch up her air force and naval capabilities until they reach the level that can deter the US.

Only then China can attain respects and peace from the US/NATO group. And then just keep up with that balance and spending will come down. There are no need to be better than US, for you will only draw into a contest of arm races.

of course we should spend more military budget than US when our GDP surpassed US,why not?why should we afraid of arm races? It's the best way to make US collapse like what US did to soviet union.
