KARACHI: President Asif Ali Zardari has declared that militants, extremists and sectarian elements will not be allowed to subvert the electoral process by creating a law and order situation.
The president, who arrived in Karachi on Friday, presided over a meeting to review the law and order situation in the metropolis in which the Karachi Police and Sindh Rangers were given a free hand to conduct a targeted operation in the city.
The presidents talks with the Sindh government was a follow-up of his Thursdays meeting with Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani in which the COAS conveyed to him the concern of corps commanders over the law and order in Karachi.
The president expressed his serious concern over the law and order situation and the incident in which two Rangers personnel were kidnapped and killed in Lyari, saying that the official who cannot give results should be sent packing.
The meeting was attended among others by Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad Khan, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah, heads of law enforcement agencies and other senior officials.
According to officials, President Zardari said that elections in the country will be held on time and called upon all political forces and stakeholders to come forward, work hand in hand with the law enforcing agencies in Karachi and play an active role in restoring peace and stability to the metropolis and bringing the criminals to the book regardless of any affiliations.
He said all political forces had to work together and augment the governments efforts to restore complete law and order and protect lives and property of citizens in the economic hub of the country.
He said it was the top priority of the government to safeguard the lives and property of citizens and that they could never be left at the mercy of a handful of vicious elements and reiterated that the criminals involved in violent activities would be traced and brought to justice.
He assured the Sindh authorities that the federal government would provide all possible help and assistance to the victims of bomb blasts. He urged the Sindh government and relevant agencies for taking stern actions to ensure the safety and protection of lives and property of citizenswhich, he said, was the prime responsibility and also the priority of the government.
Presidential spokesperson Farhatullah Babar said the president at the outset of the meeting condemned the barbaric incident of carnage at Abbas Town, Karachi, and offered Fateha for the departed souls.
Earlier, the Sindh governor and chief minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah briefed the meeting on the latest situation in the province, particularly Karachi, and the various steps afoot to maintain law and order in the city.
