KARACHI: Paramilitary Rangers on Wednesday claimed to have recovered illegal arms during an early morning raid on Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) headquarters in Karachi, Samaa reported.
According to Rangers spokesman Colonel Tahir, the forces raid the MQM headquarters, Nine Zero, on tip off about presence of criminals.
“The action continued for about two hours during which we have arrested over a dozen suspects of the party and recovered banned and illegal arms,” he told reporters on the spot.
He said MQM’s central leader Amir Khan was in custody for interrogation.
“Some absconding offenders convicted in murder case have been arrested. We are investigating what they were doing there and how they obtained banned weapons,” the Rangers spokesman said.
He said MQM’s Khursheed Begum Secretariat have been sealed following the raid. “Action will be taken against all those elements spoiling peace,” he said.
MQM condemned the raid claiming that the paramilitary personnel ransacked the party headquarters during the raid.
The raid prompted MQM to announce countrywide protests, with business and trade activities closed in Karachi and other cities of Sindh as aerial firing was also reported from Mirpurkhas, Hyderabad, Tando Allahyar and Nawabshah.
Meanwhile, a 28-year-old man was killed in firing outside MQM headquarters in Karachi where a large number of charged party workers gathered following the raid and chanted slogans against the action.
He was identified as Waqas Shah. MQM said the young man was a party worker and a member of party’s media cell.
Moreover, a cameraman associated with a private television channel was injured in firing outside Nine Zero. He was identified as Amin. – Samaa
