But everybody is only refering to an unnamed MoD member, till now I never heard of an official MoD announcement! Also Dassault has no information that they are out of the race till yet, they are also trying to get in touch with MoD.

The Indian Air Force has denied reports that the Dassault Rafale has been eliminated from the country’s medium multi-role combat aircraft competition.

“We have not ruled anyone out yet in the MMRCA competition,” says an IAF spokesman, who confirmed that the service is responsible for evaluating the contenders. “All of the tests have not been completed. The technical evaluations are only just over and we are scheduled to begin the flight tests next month. Everyone is still in the competition.”

Last week, several Indian newspapers reported that the Rafale was eliminated after failing the technical evaluation. When contacted, Dassault said that it is waiting for information from the French embassy in India as negotiations are conducted on a government-to-government basis. The embassy had no comment.

The aircraft was not brought to the Aero India 2009 show in Bangalore in February, leading to speculation that it was in danger of being eliminated from the competition. A senior French official, however, defended the no-show at the time saying that the country’s aircraft were required for NATO operations in Afghanistan.

Apart from the Rafale (above), the other five contenders for the $10-12 billion contract are the Boeing F/A-18E/F, Eurofighter Typhoon, Lockheed Martin F-16, RSK MiG-35, and Saab Gripen. India is scheduled to begin hot weather trials in May, and the aircraft will be tested in cold weather and humid conditions later in the year.

This is not the first time that the Indian media have reported that an aircraft has been eliminated from this closely watched competition. Early this year, it was reported that the Gripen had been knocked out but this was later proven untrue.

India is seeking 126 aircraft in the competition, of which 18 will be bought in fly-away condition and 108 license produced by Hindustan Aeronautics in the country. There is also an option for another 64 aircraft. The fighter chosen will replace the IAF’s RSK MiG-21s.

In the latest disappointment for the Rafale aircraft by Dassault, the Indian defence ministry announced Thursday that it would not be ordering the French military plane. The contract, which would have been one of France's biggest defence deals, was worth 12 billion dollars for 126 planes.

“The Rafale didn’t meet our usual conditions,” explained the Indian defence ministry. “Dassault cannot submit new proposals or offer alternatives for technical evaluations, and it is permanently shelved.”

An official at the defence ministry, speaking on terms of anonymity, told AFP that “the relatively high cost of the plane” was the final determining factor. This brings to mind the controversial public speech by French Defence Minister Hervé Morin in September 2007, in which he admitted that the plane was “very sophisticated, and hard to sell.”

After india rejection Prestigious defence magzine Forecast International has claimed that Pakistan Air Force is set to induct state of the art jet fighter Rafales as its front line air deterrence. Senior officials of Dassault Aviation, Snecma, and Thales said on condition of anonymity,

France has given clearance for the sale of Rafale fighter aircrafts to Pakistan. The senior officials of Dassault Aviation, Snecma, and Thales were very tight lipid about the details of the deal because of the level of sensitivity of the issue to Pakistan. Dassault Aviation has been pressing Pakistan to buy Rafale for almost two years but due to financial and political situations, Pakistan has with held the final decision.

According to the officials of Dassault Aviation, Pakistan is expected to place an initial order for 44 Rafales and take an option on another 54 of them. PAF spokesman when contacted neither confirmed nor denied the Forecast International report.
Pakistan Observer believes that Pakistan and France are indeed discussing the Rafale sale for last six months. A private delegation of Dassault was in Islamabad for many weeks discussing primarily the Mirage 2000-5 deal. The 2000-5 mirages were offered to Pakistan without some of the offensive capabilities that PAF required, so PAF refused to go for Mirage 2000-5. Then came up the Rafale option as Dassault is very keen to sell these fighters after the inception of Euro-Fighter.

Good way to apply pressure on Dassault especially considering the upgrades. It must be a little embarrassing though.

You are right. India is mature and they will use MRCA to its full potential. I think they will go to USA if USA given them green signal. It also depend on new indian government.

Just like I said wait and see if it's confirmed. Rafale is the best true multi role fighter in the race, so it' can't be out so early.

Have to agree about Rafale being the best.

Both Typhoon & Rafale would be ideal best choices in terms of them being the latest and best in Europe with good TOT on offer.

The F16 & F18 though great options i get the impression it will bvecome old news soon after IAF inducts in 2014.

MIG35 is a big no no too much like MIG29 and IAF wud become all russian airforce too dangerous/.

Gripen for me is too sim,iliar to LCAS tejas.

i may sound stupid but i think that Pakistan besides relaying on chinese jets should go for some westren stuff also examples are better know by all of you like EF2000 ,F35A or Gripen etc

The Mig and F16 are the worst candidates, because they offer the least advantages. Mig 35 is just bigger upgrade of Mig 29 (improved radar and engine) and would mean total dependense on Russia. F16 IN only advantage against PAF F16 block 52+ is AESA radar and even the offer of F35 in future is not worth it. We already developing a 5. gen fighter with Russia and maybe will build a 2nd one for the same role that F35 is used for.

Sorry to interrupt in everyone's speculation about getting the Rafale, But I must ask how is that ever going to happen? On one hand, our economists are saying that we should reduce our imports and minimize the consumption of 'Candies' to save money, and on the other hand you people think that we MIGHT have a shot at buying the RAFALE for about 90 million $ a piece? Let's get real, shall we?

We should wait for the Block 50/52's and after receiving them (God knows when), we must move on to other country's for our military needs. But Rafale? Don't see that happening.
