Today at 14:04 French time, during an air combat training session with an F-18 fighter from the American aircraft carrier USS Eisenhower off the Spanish Mediterranean coast, the pilot of a Rafale Marine belonging to Flotille 12F ejected at sea.

He was recovered by an American helicopter and flown back to the French aircraft carrier, where he underwent medical treatment.

An inquiry has been opened to determine the exact circumstances and the causes of this accident.

Having sailed from Toulon on May 30, the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle and its escorts are currently training in the Mediterranean and in the Atlantic, and will continue until July 5.

Marine Nationale (French Navy) Dassault Rafale M of 12F crashed into sea off the Spanish coast, about 70nm southeast of Alicante, during during a a simulated dog fight with an F/A-18 Hornet of USS Eisenhower.

The pilot ejected safely and came down in sea where he was rescued by a U.S. helicopter and airlifted to the French-carrier FS Charles de Gaulle.

Yes it can, the catapult on the French carrier is an American system. This aircraft was shot from CDG not the USS Eisenhower.

US approval will likely be required but not for the landing gear.The landing gear is made by an Italian firm.

That is not how these things are measured. Attrition rate is defined as the sum of losses over total flying hours.

That is one plausible explanation there could be others, IAF will likely get briefed in on the results of the investigation.

Pilot will also be able to provide some feedback before the flight data is collected as to what happened.
