Ok to start with i am pretty confused . The institutes here in Pakistan are offering MBAs of various duration that is the study period for MBA depends upon the institute . Some are offering it for 1.5 years and some for 2 years and one with 2.5 years as well to the students who have done their graduation in business administration i.e BSBA (Honors) or more commonly known as BBA (Honors)

The top institutes for business and management here in Pakistan are

1-LUMS
2-IBA Karachi
3-LSE
4-Iobm and Szabist

LUMS is offering a 2 year MBA program to business graduates as well as to graduates from different backgrounds

IBA is offering 2 year MBA program to non business graduates while 1.5 years MBA program to graduates with BBA (honors) degree

LSE is offering 1.5 years MBA program to just her own graduates (only those students who have completed their graduation in business studies form LSE) while 2.5 years program to outsiders regardless they are from business background, engineering or some other.
The 2.5 year program comprises of 7 semesters with 4months semester that makes 3 semester a year while the last semester includes a thesis only . Total of 29 subjects are taught during the program

Iobm is offering 1 year and 1.5 year MBA program to the business graduates while Szabist is offering 1.5 years MBA program for business graduates

Now i am totally messed up with the variation in duration. so out of curiosity wanted to know about the duration in india for business graduates .

I have learned that IIM-Ahmedabad is top ranked business institute in india , so starting with that to other institutes can you guys inform me with the durations of the MBA program just for business administration graduates

Most MBA programs in India are 2 year Programs at the IIMs. However, even 1 year programs are extremely popular at schools like ISB which is probably a notch above the IIMs. The theory behind a 1 year program is that -

a. MBA is generally a mid-career choice - so it is difficult to take 2 years off

b. If you take 2 years off - you potentially lose 1 year of money you can earn.

I did a one year MBA myself - it was a fast track program and you spent a lot more time in the classrooms and in group meetings than you would in a typical 2 year program. I suggest that depending on your major in the MBA - choose the most suitable University and only then look at the duration of the program.

In my head i am too messed up with the duration as it is really hard for me to take 2 or 2.5 years off , means loosing too much of salary but the other options with 1.5 year are not feasible location wise :p

How many years of work experience do you have.

Yeah i know that , most of them are offering 1 year programs .but the situation in USA, Canada and Aus is different most of their unis are offering 2 year program after a couple of years of experience

I thought it once but i have many relatives there and they told me the job situation there is not so good specially for the asians and precisely for the Pakistanis there is so much biasedness and very very hard to get a job that too with decent package in the midst of economic crisis there.

That means i have to come back after completing MBA and do job in Pakistan but with what i have seen if you want to do job in Pakistan best option is to do it from best institute in Pakistan no need to waste so much money on foreign institutes as at the end of the day you will get same what a LUMS Mba is getting , the job market is not that good and even the foreign MBAs are not getting that much . Local students with degrees form uni like LUMS are doing relatively better due to the uni support , campus hiring and various other factors involved.

For ISB you need atleast 3 yrs work experience.

Though you call apply for IIM through it's forign quota for its PGP program, fees can be anywhere around Rs 7-15 lakhs depending on the institution.

There are lost of other good institutes like IIFT which will give you a PGDM in International Business, and ther are college like Xavier's, FMS, Symbiosis and Nirma.

IIFT, Xavier's and Symbiosis all have their separate examination's and you cannot apply their through your CAT score.

If you are interested in Rural management, IIRMA is a good college.

If you want information in detail visit pagalguy.com,its a MBA forum, u can get all information in detail or simply check their websites which can be a tumultuous task.

But dont go by the ranking's of Pagalguy, upto no 30 its fair, after that its somewhat paid ranking.

I have heard that in ISB its mandatory to live in the campus for registered students in post graduate programs

If you have less than 5 years of experience or want to change your career path, then go for 2 years. If you want to continue in the same field then go for 1 year.

I would give 100 time more importance to the brand name of the school than the duration of the MBA program. If you want your MBA from Pakistan, don't settle for anything less than LUMS or IBA.

I agree 100% - Go for brand name and not for the duration.

If you are considering MBA in India, know that there are many IIM's (over 10), and each one has a distinct identity and separate ranking.

ISB Hyderabad is the (globally) top most ranked B-School in India. Admission in ISB is through GMAT and you require a minimum 3 year work exp.

In India itself, however, IIM-Ahmedabad is considered to be at the top. Admission is through CAT.
Most colleges in India take admission through CAT, some however dont.
The most prominent other exam apart from CAT for MBA is XAT(Xavier's Aptitude Test) - for XLRI Jamshedpur(Rank 4 or 5) and some other colleges.
Then SNAP for Symbiosis.

In India, Full time MBA is of 2 types:
2 years Course
1 year course. This one year course is called Executive program, and is only available if you have a work experience of 2 years or more.

Most MBA colleges in India have mandatory living in campus for the course duration.

However if you do get into any of the top 15 MBA colleges in India, rest assured you will be placed in a company of your choice either in India or abroad.

Money for these colleges should not be a major concern, practically every bank will give you an education loan if you get admission. Needless to say the package at These b-schools is phenomenal. You will in all likelihood cover your loan within your first year of employement.

Wish you luck!

Hey mani, I have recently completed my MBA from an IIM. for intputs I completely recall jackdaws, prototype and contrarian's posts. For any other specific inputs, you are welcome.

India have normally 3 type of MBAs with different durations:-

1) Normal Classroom MBA : Duration 2 years. prerequisite : one need to clear the exam.
2) Experienced MBA: Normally 1 year. Prerequisite; one should have certain (normally 5+ year) of work experience (different for Different college as well)
3) Distance Learning/ Weekend classes MBA : Normally 3 years. Some college has work ex restriction some have exams.

Normally 3rd has not got due reputation in industry. 1 and 2 are famous one.
