While I see little religious significance for Saudi Arabia, the political aspect of it seems to be following earlier neo-con. Ideals of creating a vatican state out of Mecca and Medina- the Saudis were always going to end up as a third party- despite their fears that without mecca or medina they woud lose credibility; the US establishment needs them to control the oil within their current territorial area.
