It is an SSBN the same design with some hull modifications can be configured as SSN.

Dude. India would have only 2 SSBN's by 2020.One Arihant and one Aridhman, since only Aridhman is under construction. It still would not Justify such hugh expenditure on SSN's.

Position of Chinese Navy in Indian Ocean is worst than that of British Navy and It is going to remain so for forever.Chinese does not have means of project power in Indian ocean. Andaman and Nicobar Island is close to 4000 Km from Chinese base of Hainan via Malacca straits (shortest distance), and Indian coastline is 5500 Km away.This is beyond range of any Chinese ship without refueling.Also it could not spare ships even if it get capability to do so because of threats it face in SCS and Pacific.

Also leased Akulas do not come with AShCM's as selling missile of more than 300 Km in range is forbidden. They are merely torpedo dispensing platforms.

My contention was that given the fact that we do not have any major threat from Chinese and Pakistani Navy, won't it be wise that we allocate resources to more pressing needs of Navy like conventional Subs and Aircraft carriers?

We could start our own SSN program based on hull of Scorpene for which we have got ToT.




You can buy Nuclear SSN's but you cannot buy Anti Ship missiles that could be fired from SSN. Sale of SSBN is completely forbidden.

Well to be fair by 2020 India will have 3-4 SSBNs and only 1 SSN (INS Chakra). With the Chinese becoming increasingly assortative in the IOR additional SSNs are needed and an indigenous SSN class is at least a decade away from entering service. I don't think the IN has the time to sit back and wait until then....

Transfer of Technology on its latest Bori(am not sure about e spellings?) Class submarine will be a good investment for BRO-Mance. We can start building in numbers and develop smaller Arihant for separate role. Time to act smart and do it in a fashion .

Let's have 40 sub marines as our permanent fleet strength.

In submarine related i have little knowledge so bare with me, can we say capabilities wise 2 conventional submarine = 1 SSN, if so then we definitely take another 2 to 3 nuclear SSN in next 3 years from Russia. We are badly second in terms in Submarine with China. Make in India mantra will not work as i don't see how we are going to induct 24 submarine by 2022. Its real mess in Submarine procurement.

Well I don't know what article you read but the Arihant class is without a doubt a SSBN and it is the indigenous SSN class that will follow not the other way around.

It is very difficult to say which is better. Both have their pros & cons. Modern AIP conventional submarines are quieter underwater than nuclear submarines while running on electric power because nuclear reactor of nuke subs constantly pumps coolant, generating some amount of detectable noise. There are several examples available of Diesel Subs defeating nuke subs in mock exercises. Apart from that nuke subs are also very expensive than conventional ones. While nuclear-powered submarines dominate in terms of submerged endurance and deep-ocean performance. Another advantage of nuclear-powered designs is their ability to carry heavy long range ballistic & cruise missiles. For a Blue water navy Nuclear submarines are must.
We are behind China in submarine force but remember six Scorpene subs are under production & six other DE subs are in pipeline. Our focus should be on building nuke subs indigenously instead of wasting precious money on leasing foreign products. We have three highly capable private sector & two public sector shipyards to fulfill IN submarine needs.
