Pakistan gets heat-tolerant, high-yield hybrid rice variety

Pakistan Observer
Nov 21, 2023

Farmers in Sindh and South Punjab are all set to get a new heat-resistant hybrid rice variety with high yield potential during the next season after the completion of its successful commercial trial in Larkana.

Yuan Longping High-Tech, a leading Chinese agricultural company and Guard Agricultural Research & Services (Pvt) Limited have conducted a successful commercial trial of their 14th Hybrid Rice variety In Sindh.

Compared to the previous varieties, the new one has the potential for more yield besides it is resistant to heat and lodging.

“The new variety has more yield potential. It is also heat tolerant which will help cope with the challenges posed by high temperatures and prolong summers. In collaboration with Yuan Longping High-Tech, we trialed this new variety for three years.

Now, it will be available for commercial plantation from the next season,” said Momin Ali Malik, Guard’s Seed Division Executive while talking to a group of journalists.

Journalists from Lahore also visited Larkana along with the Chinese and local scientists and witnessed the new variety near harvest.

Mr Tai, a representative of Yuan Longping High-Tech, said that it was the 14th variety being introduced with the Sino-Pak collaboration. He said that the new variety has more yield potential than the previous ones.

“Previous varieties have increased the production from 60-70 to 120 maunds per acre. The new variety is heat tolerant with the yield potential of more than 150 maunds per acre,” he said.

Guard started introducing hybrid rice technology to farmers in Sindh in the early 2000s after years of research and field trials in collaboration with China’s Yuan Longping High-Tech Agriculture company.

The efforts helped double per acre rice yield and boosted the farmers’ income leading to the alleviation of poverty in the rice-growing areas of Sindh and Southern Punjab.

Busy intersections in Lahore to have modern traffic signals

Modern traffic singals to be installed at busy intersentions.

Modern traffic singals to be installed at busy intersentions.

Traffic Engineering and Transport Planning Agency (Tepa) has decided to modernise the city’s major intersections by installing international-standard traffic signals and signage.

The pilot project to modernise Faisal Chowk on The Mall is likely to complete soon as work is underway at a fast pace on the site, Dawn has learnt.

“We are starting this major development scheme with a pilot project on The Mall (Faisal Chowk) — one of the busiest intersections in the city. All civil work has been completed and the only job which is yet to be accomplished is the installation of traffic signals, signage etc,” Tepa Chief Engineer Iqrar Hussain told Dawn.

“In the next week or so, we will complete the signals/signage installation work,” he added.

Sharing details, he said the traffic signals and signage to be installed at Faisal Chowk are same as those in the United States and Canada. These are state-of-the-art gadgets, with automated operation both for the pedestrians as well as motorists, aimed at checking traffic accidents at this busy point, he added. Lights have also been installed on the road, he said.

To a question, he said the traffic signals planned for installation last year were later replaced with the most modern gadgets in the project proposal.

“We will expand this initiative if the pilot project remains successful,” the Tepa chief said, adding the planning to equip other city intersections with modern signaling system is also underway side by side.

On the other hand, Lahore Development Authority (LDA) Director General Tahir Farooq paid a visit to the Tepa head office on Lytton Road to receive a briefing on various ongoing and future projects.

During the briefing, the Tepa team headed by the chief engineer told the DG about various projects, including the Faisal Chowk project.

The DG directed the officers to also consult with the traffic police while planning and launching any project to ensure smooth traffic flow at choking points. He asked the Tepa administration to complete all ongoing projects according to the timeline.
