You know I was really excited about that possibility. However things are NOT looking good. Two things are must.
- Gwadar MUST get connect to all of Pakistan via rail and motorways. When this happens Gwadar would become a alternative to Karachi. Don';t forget Karachi has had 150 years head start in laying of transport links. The British built the first rail line to connect Punjab with Karachi way back in 1870s. Ever since roads and other infra has built up over that 150 years. Recently we saw M5 motorway completed which further improves Karachi's connectivity with 200 million people of market of Pakistan. Entire chain supply has buiult up.
- Gwadar has NOTHING. It has to catch up with that 150 years advantage Karachi enjoys. However I suspect because the government is facing finiancial crunch it does not have $50 billion that would be needed to connect Gwadar comprehensively with rest of Pakistan.
- Gwadar must be left in control of Balochistan government and it's people must get primary first preferantial. Money must be spent to build up humam capital. Internal migration must be restricted like China does to prevent Baloch being swamped and feeling estranged from their land which will fuel political instability enabling the terrorist activity.
Again none of us have crystal ball but if Pakistan is smart they really should be targetting all those low end manufacturing coming from China and I agree Internal restrictions needs to be put in place so the Baloch dont feel they are being swamped
