Former chairman National Assembly Standing Committee on Sports Iqbal Muhammad Ali Khan on Thursday, in a letter written to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, said privatisation of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) would be suicidal for cricket in Pakistan.

He also said that the privatisation of PSL will benefit few individuals.

"Board of governors of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) in a meeting on November 08, 2016 had presented a resolution demanding formalising PSL as an independent private limited company and privatising the PSL will soon demolish the infrastructure of cricket in Pakistan. It will badly affect both our national and international cricket,” read the letter.

The former head of the sports committee wrote in the letter that domestic cricket was already facing a shortage of funds due to lack of international cricket on home grounds and detaching the PSL brand from PCB will increase the dearth of funds as this is a major source of income.

“Cricket leagues like PSL are held to bring cash to their cricket board, but after this step PCB will remain deprived and the political influential individuals will fill their pockets,” the latter added.

Iqbal asked the premier to intervene in this matter and stop privatisation of the only cricket league of Pakistan.

What is the PSL?
The PSL is Pakistan's first franchise-based league, featuring five teams, and has provided emerging as well as established cricketers with a lucrative opportunity to display their Twenty20 talent during the extravaganza which continues till February 23.

The long-awaited first edition of the Pakistan Super League followed two previous attempts that fell through over a lack of sponsorship and the suspension of international cricket at home in the wake of a militant attack on the Sri Lankan team almost seven years ago.

The teams were sold to private consortiums for a sum of $93 million across 10 years, with $200,000 salaries for top-tier players and relatively handsome paydays for middle-tier and emerging talent.

Removal of PSL from Pakistan's board would mean conflict of interest in contracts should players play for club team more vs National Team

However investors who own the clubs have a legitimate right to benefit from "Sales" and promotion of the franchise or TV deals but at same time , they do also need to actually "Groom"new talent

Should be 51% Revenue own by PCB , 49% by Franchise owners.
  • PCB runs Senior Team
  • PCB runs Junior Programs
  • PCB offers central contracts
  • PCB runs various Talent work discovery tournaments or events
So it also needs to gain from benefits of PSL which is after all based on Pakistani Talent which came from its programs

If PSL was promoting Cricket from age 10 to age 18 in local academies then yes I would say they groomed the talent and they can own 100% of profits

Also the system is more reliable, in looking after National Interest of the sport first vs Club level

Countries that often split the management in such format struggle with Courts and cases over time as management from each side blames each other for loses and weak performances

In any case PCB hold the ultimate card of not allowing its national players to participate in the PSL event if it breaks off on its own

PCB will still control it and all franchises are cooperative.

I dnt think its suicidal . i think it will produce more local talents just like foot ball clubs i e manchester united or barcelona .

These kind sport leagues have to be run by private organizations and the Government should concentrate only on governance and nation building. Take a leaf out of the success story of IPL. It wouldn't have been this much successful if the Indian Government had run it.

I would be careful of any plan by Najam Sethi. He is one ambitious shrewd guy. Almost everything he does eventually comes back to bite Pak's *** in the end.
