President Xi Jinping Visits Pakistan.

I remember once upon a time I was in a street of Vancouver and holding every thing in rain. I got lost at that moment, a friendly Pakistan stranger stopped his car along the road and took me to where I thought is destination ( location was ambiguous) . That was 2010, sincere handshake and regards to each other, Wordless, tears hold everything

China's Xi Jinping agrees $46bn superhighway to Pakistan

China's President Xi Jinping has signed agreements with Pakistan promising investment of $46bn (£30.7bn).

The focus of spending is on building a China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) - a network of roads, railway and pipelines between the long-time allies.

They will run some 3,000km (1,800 miles) from Gwadar in Pakistan to China's western Xinjiang region.

The projects will give China direct access to the Indian Ocean and beyond.

This marks a major advance in China's plans to boost its influence in Central and South Asia, correspondents say, and far exceeds US spending in Pakistan.

"Pakistan, for China, is now of pivotal importance. This has to succeed and be seen to succeed," Reuters quoted Mushahid Hussain Sayed, chairman of the Pakistani parliament's defence committee, as saying.

Pakistan, for its part, hopes the investment will strengthen its struggling economy and help end chronic power shortages.

Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said ties with China had "remained robust" despite political changes and "major regional developments" over four generations.

"Our relations are based on the shared ideals and principles of mutual trust, mutual benefit and mutual respect," he said.

Is Pakistan on the verge of becoming the Asian Tiger Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said it would become when he was last in power in 1997?

China plans to inject some $46bn - almost three times the entire foreign direct investment Pakistan has received since 2008. Many say Mr Sharif's penchant for "thinking big" and China's increasing need to control maritime trade routes may well combine to pull off an economic miracle in Pakistan.

But there are questions over Pakistan's ability to absorb this investment given its chronic problems with militancy, separatism, political volatility and official corruption.

China is worried about violence from ethnic Uighurs in its mostly Muslim north-western Xinjiang region and fears hard-line separatists could team up with Uighur militants fighting alongside members of Pakistan's Taliban.

In Pakistan, a decade-old separatist insurgency in Balochistan province, where the economic corridor starts, makes that area extremely volatile. Many observers believe however that the incentive of an economic miracle may make Islamabad work harder to stabilise the situation.

China prestige projects around the world

Mr Xi will spend two days holding talks with his counterpart Mamnoon Hussain, Mr Sharif and other ministers.

He was expected to discuss security issues with Mr Sharif, including China's concerns that Muslim separatists from Xinjiang are linking up with Pakistani militants.

"China and Pakistan need to align security concerns more closely to strengthen security co-operation," Mr Xi said on Sunday.

Under the CPEC plan, China's government and banks will lend to Chinese companies, so they can invest in projects as commercial ventures.

Some $15.5bn worth of coal, wind, solar and hydro energy projects will come online by 2017 and add 10,400 megawatts of energy to Pakistan's national grid, according to officials.

A $44m optical fibre cable between the two countries is also due to be built.

Pakistan, meanwhile, hopes the investment will enable it to transform itself into a regional economic hub.

Ahsan Iqbal, the Pakistani minister overseeing the plan, told AFP news agency that these were "very substantial and tangible projects which will have a significant transformative effect".

Pakistan's neighbour and rival, India, will be watching developments closely. Delhi is wary of China's regional ambitions, despite relations improving markedly in recent years.

President Xi visited Delhi last year, after postponing his visit to Islamabad because of anti-government protests. India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi is due in China next month.

BEIJING, April 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Xi Jinping will pay a state visit to Pakistan on Monday and Tuesday, which will be his first trip to the South Asian country since he assumed the presidency in 2013 and will bring new development opportunities for the bilateral traditional friendship.

Xi's visit shows the importance of China-Pakistan relations, as the South Asian country is a key neighbor as well as an all-weather strategic cooperative partner of China.

China and Pakistan are linked by mountains and rivers and the two peoples share a traditional friendship based on sincerity and mutual support since the establishment of diplomatic ties 64 years ago.

The Chinese people have always regarded the Pakistani people as reliable friends, and Pakistan has supported China on many issues concerning China's core interests and spared no effort in helping the Chinese people and government when natural disasters occurred.

Today, China and Pakistan stand at a new starting point and are blessed with favorable conditions of new opportunities, geographical convenience and common resolve to develop traditional friendship.

During Xi's visit, China and Pakistan will sign deals on a wide range of issues, from energy and infrastructure to education and culture, which will inject fresh and powerful impetus into the deepening of China-Pakistan friendship and comprehensive collaboration.

The two countries have maintained good momentum in developing bilateral ties and their cooperation featuring the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a flagship project aimed at boosting connectivity between the two neighbors, has been pragmatic and fruitful.

CPEC, also an important part of the China-proposed Belt and Road initiative, has set up the strategic framework for pragmatic cooperation between the two countries.

Economic cooperation between China and Pakistan works for the integration of their economies. President Xi's visit will help the two countries develop closer economic ties, allowing both sides to strengthen cooperation in the areas of ports, energy, infrastructure and industry with CPEC at the center.

Economic exchanges between the two sides are growing, with bilateral trade exceeding 16 billion U.S. dollars in 2014.

People-to-people exchanges are also increasing, especially between the youths. Xi's visit will boost mutual visits, language training, youth exchanges and cooperation between sister cities, media and think tanks of the two countries.

This year is the China-Pakistan Year of Friendly Exchanges and President Xi's visit will open a new chapter of friendship between China and Pakistan, giving new life to the all-weather friendship and all-dimensional cooperation between the two countries.

ISLAMABAD, April 20 (Xinhua) -- A signed article by Chinese President Xi Jinping on Sunday drew enthusiastic responses from Pakistanis in all walks of life, who said his upcoming historic visit will open a new chapter for China-Pakistan all-weather strategic cooperative partnership.

Pakistan is the first stop of Xi's first overseas trip this year. The Chinese president is to visit the country Monday and Tuesday before traveling to Indonesia for an Asian-African summit and activities commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Bandung Conference.

The visit will provide a "historic opportunity" for further deepening the time-tested all-weather friendship between the two countries, Pakistani President Mamnoon Hussain said.

In the article published by Pakistani press on the eve of Xi's state visit to the South Asian nation, the Chinese president called for advancing cooperation with Pakistan in various areas.

Sartaj Aziz, Pakistan's top national security adviser, described the article titled "Long Live China-Pakistan Friendship" as "incisive and warm."

"The article very rightly pointed out the historical background, and the progress made in strengthening relationship and predicts with confidence that these relations will be lifted to a new height in the coming years," he said.

He said Pakistan firmly adheres to the "one China" policy and has supported China on such core issues as Tibet, human rights and fight against terrorism.

Rahimullah Yousafzai, editor-in-chief of The News daily, said the article showed that like the old generations of Chinese leaders, the new Chinese leadership is familiar with the longstanding relations with Pakistan.

"The Chinese president's comments show the bilateral relations had been friendly despite so many changes in the world and the region. There is more potential to further cement these relations under the incumbent Chinese leaders as the president has also mentioned," he said.

Echoing Yousafzai's view, Javed Siddiqu, editor-in-chief of the Urdu daily Nawa-i-Waqt, said that in the article the Chinese president has rightly and in true spirit explained his sentiments about Pakistan.

"The former Chinese leaders had laid a strong foundation for bilateral relations and President Xi and other leaders have continued the same policies and want to contribute more to make the relationship strong," said Siddiqu, who is also an anchor of a TV program on current affairs.

"President Xi has expressed special sentiments for Pakistan in his article and that is important ahead of his historic visit. Pakistanis have similar sentiments for the Chinese president and other leaders as all survey conducted in Pakistan shows China is the number one friend of Pakistan," he said.

Saeed Chaudhary, director of the Islamabad-based Independent Bureau for Humanitarian Issues, said that through the article, Xi directly talked to Pakistanis and made them aware what he has been feeling for Pakistan.

"His start with a quote from an Urdu poem is touching because Xi Jinping told Pakistanis that Pakistan lives in the heart of China," he said.

"I has heard that Chinese President Xi Jinping possesses a charismatic personality that easily win hearts ... but now during last one week what atmosphere has been developed in Pakistan to welcome him is really a proof that he has something fascinating," he added.

Huamira Sharif, a student of International Relations at the National Defense University, said he was moved by the Chinese president's words that described Pakistan as the home of his own brother.

"I also love China because China has always helped us like a true brother and like a loyal friend. Pakistan and China's relationships are old and I hope that they will keep on supporting each other in the future," he said.

He said that both countries have ancient civilizations and that cultural exchange programs will give chance to the two peoples to learn from each other.

"Chinese people have worked very hard ... and I hope that by following the footsteps of China, Pakistan will fulfill its dream of becoming an Asian Tiger," Sharif said.

One wonders why Asif Ali Zardari is sitting next to the Prime Minister. The current president or even the Chief Minister of Punjab whose presence next to the prime minister would make some sense are absent. Zardari has NO official government post, he is not even the leader of the opposition. That picture says it all regarding who is about to get rich.

I didn't know about this graveyard .. Do the graves belong to KKH workers an engineers ? Hundreds of Pakistani and Chinese workers laid their lives building that highway.

Media needs to raise this issue and someone should inform Nawaz Sharif in case he has forgotten it that he is PM of Pakistan that starts from Gilgit and ends at Karachi and not just central and upper punjab that starts from Sialkot and ends at Lahore.
