Prime Minister Imran Khan has said the “tipping point” has come to take the country forward as he inaugurated a multibillion-rupees development project in Lahore.

Addressing the inauguration ceremony of River Ravi Urban Development Authority project on Friday, the premier said first two years of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government were very difficult, saying that his government protected the country from going default on debts.

“In the past, billions of rupees were spent on projects like Orange Line and Metro Bus which do not create wealth rather they are dependent on subsidies,” said PM Imran in an apparent jibe at the main opposition party, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), which takes credit for initiating mass transit projects in Lahore.

He said the Ravi project worth Rs5 trillion will create wealth and massive employment opportunities.

“This project is essential for the survival of Lahore,” he said, adding that vertical expansion of the cities can resolve the growing urban challenges including exploding population and climate change.

The project was originally envisioned in 2013 by the Urban Unit, an urban sector planning arm of the provincial government, which is spread over 44,817 acres and will set a new centre of the city.

It will have 14 zones, including residential, commercial, mix-use zones, medical city, forest reserve and central business district.

The project is located in the districts of Lahore and Sheikhupura, run along the Ravi River in a northeast-southwest direction.

The documents highlighted that Lahore is the most urbanised and the most populated district compared to its neighbours – Sheikhupura and Kasur districts. The built-up ratio to open land in Lahore is approximately 50% whereas the cumulative built-up ratio in the remaining districts is less than 10%.

In this respect, the proposed project site is expected to bridge the gap between Lahore’s expansion towards the west and the district of Sheikhupura.

The prime minister also cautioned the Punjab government that it would face many challenges while completing this project and advised it not to give up come what may. “This project is very complicated or else it would have been built by now as it was started in 2004.”

LAHORE - Prime Minister Imran Khan on Friday inaugurated Ravi Urban Development Authority in Lahore.

Do you know what actually the Ravi Riverfront Urban Development Project is?

The project was first undertaken by then deputy commissioner of Lahore in 1947.

The current project launched by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government aims at uplifting of dying river instead of constructing buildings and it will be the world’s largest riverfront, which runs from Ravi Siphon to Balloki.

The project comprises three phases wherein the river, which has shrunk into a nullah, will be developed into a freshwater body with rainwater and treated wastewater in the first phase.

The river will also be provided water from upper Chanab and BRB canal when it is required.

In the first phase, which would take three years to complete, a lake covering 46 kilometers area, six wastewater treatment plants, three barrages and urban forest would be development.

The second phase will see development of road infrastructure while special health, education, commercial, innovation and spots centres will be established in the third phase.

Whatever little greenery/forest is left in Lahore, this project (if it ever materializes) will destroy all this --- There are hundreds of housing societies still lying vacant and they planning for another massive one ---- the benefit will only go to land/builder mafias.

Mafia will continue to make money and public will get nothing. I had the chance I would have moved the Punjab capital away from Lahore and build a new well planned small vertical city in Punjab as the capital.

Mehmood-ur-Rasheed announced the revised area of the riverfront development to be 40,000 hectares (100,000 acres) instead of 18,000 hectares. 70% of its area will be reserved for the plantation of 6 million trees.

KCR is coming back. In today's hearing at Karachi registry , Federal Govt taking over Karachi ....

It’s only talk, establishment has intentionally neglected Karachi so most of the Pakistan budget can be spent on one city, Lahore.

I just hope this becomes reality -- (I see vultures flying all over this area) --- I still don't get, why we need residential/commercial units in this project --- As I said before, hundreds of societies are lying vacant+ look at Lda city, it will take years to complete it.
