That is what I am saying........the new generation of these radical extremists is not the Mullah Umers or Osama Bind Ladens of the Afghan Wars in the 80's....they are a mix of foreign and local teenagers (mostly from poor families) being misguided by country-less foreigners from Chechnya, Uzbekistan etc and being funded by the Saudi radicals to say the least.

no one knows. but pakistan is an opportunity to test new unreliable technologies that in theory "transform" warfare into something cheaper and less risky.

pakistan is like wake island during world war 2. it was garrisoned by the japanese and they never retook it. they just used it for bombing practice.

The U.S. Ambassador to Pakistan was also killed in the crash. Do you seriously expect us to believe that the CIA conspired to kill an American ambassador? Or are you really telling us that because Zia was so obviously in the CIA's pocket, you, as a loyal KGB operative, somehow used your dinner with General Wasam & company to arrange the crash - an example of "perfect" coordination between CIA influence and KGB backlash?

During the Afghan war in the 1980s, although Pakistan was accused by USA of running a clandestine nuclear programme, yet it not only maintained best of relations with Pakistan and ignored its nuclear program but also showered it with liberal economic and military assistance. From 1985 to 1989, Ronald Reagan kept certifying that Pakistan was not engaged in weapon oriented nuclear program well knowing that it was doing so secretly. Sanctions were imposed by senior Bush through Pressler Amendment in October 1990 when the war had ended and the Soviet forces had been pushed out of Afghanistan. Gen Ziaul Haq stood up to the challenge and supported the Afghan Mujahideen without outside support till the Americans decided to jump into the fray in mid 1981.

He played his cards shrewdly by playing the policy of nuclear ambiguity. Not only had he extracted $3.5 billion from USA, he continued with nuclear program relentlessly and by 1983 the desired capability of priming a bomb had been acquired. It was essentially because of this nuclear capability that India’s jingoism in 1986 and in 1990 was defused. While CIA was extended full cooperation, its focus was kept entirely towards Afghan Jihad with controls in the hands of ISI under Gen Abdul Rehman and later Hamid Gul. All efforts of CIA to peep into KRL failed because of robust intelligence network put in place. Some may still be remembering the thrashing given to some foreign diplomats trying to get closer to the forbidden area.

In the eighties and nineties, the ominous threat of combined Indo-Israeli surgical air strike against Kahuta Plant continued to loom over Pakistan’s horizon. This threat had almost turned into reality a day before Pakistan conducted its nuclear tests in May 1998. Israeli jets were reported at Srinagar airbase from where the intended target was within the turn round striking distance. The strike was thwarted at the nick of the time when the then leadership threatened to deploy its nuclear tipped missiles and gave a stern warning to Indian Ambassador that any hostile action would be replied with full force.

Our nuclear tests took the heat out of Indian leadership’s belligerency which till that moment was giving highly provocative statements. Indian hostile actions along the LoC in Kashmir and in Kashmir were always responded vigorously and we always had a better of them in spite of the fact that Indian posts are on much higher grounds. Jihadi spirit was wholly alive because of the ongoing freedom movement in Kashmir where the Kashmiri Mujahideen had pinned down over 7 lacs Indian security forces since 1989. The wanton atrocities perpetrated by Indian forces on Kashmiris were projected by our media and the world bodies had started to take notice of massive human rights violations. Vajpayee had at his own come to Lahore in February 1999 and talked in very favourable terms of resolving the Kashmir dispute.

As opposed to Gen Ziaul Haq and Nawaz Sharif, Gen Musharraf half-fainted on receiving a threatening call from Colin Powel at midnight of 12 September 2001. He promptly accepted all the seven demands without a whimper which took the caller by surprise. Having assessed his psyche, the rest was easy. They kept pushing him and he kept ceding ground at his own without taking the dummy legislature and the top brass of army in confidence.

The ISI under Lt Gen Ehsan was made to do the dirty work of tracing and nabbing Al-Qaeda operatives and their associates and handing them over to USA without trials in return for reward money. The CIA and FBI were given complete liberty of action to recruit agents in tribal belts and to operate anywhere in the country to stalk Al-Qaeda. CIA operated drones based in Afghanistan were also allowed to operate inside Pakistani airspace for intelligence gathering. By virtue of four air bases in Baluchistan in full control of USA, CIA made deep inroads in Baluchistan and succeeded in cultivating dissident Sardars including Nawab Bugti to serve its interests. It made good use of Shamsi base to monitor Iran.

Musharraf’s u-turn on Afghanistan and blatant submission to US dictates became a cause of resentment within the army. Several senior officers opposed to his US centric policies saw him as a lackey of USA. In order to pacify the army’s top brass, he cooked up a story that had he not accepted US terms Pakistan would have been pushed into Stone Age. His cronies breathed a sigh of relief and described him as a saviour, but rumblings of a bloody coup could be heard to get rid of Musharraf. To prevent such a situation, Musharraf requested Bush to ask India to fabricate an excuse and carryout large scale troop deployment all along Pak border and create war hysteria. The biggest mobilisation enabled Musharraf to push out the entire army out of cantonments to the borders. They were kept there in a state of high alert from December 2001 till December 2002 without any rest. Induction of over one lac troops into the furnace of FATA was also link of the same chain to keep the army engaged in fruitless war on terror. Lt Gens Akram, Usmani, Mahmud, Salahuddin Trimizi, Salim Haider were got rid off and his own loyalists with liberal outlook promoted. Likewise junior officers having conservative makeup were weeded out and pliant and docile officers were upgraded.

In return for the favour extended by India, Musharraf allowed it to fence the entire length of LoC in Kashmir and establish posts wherever fencing was not possible. All Jihadi camps located in AJK, which is a legitimate operational base for freedom movement in disputed Kashmir, were dismantled. Likewise, all Jihadi groups engaged in helping the oppressed Kashmiris in IHK were disbanded and their funds frozen. He on the quiet agreed to accept the LoC as permanent border between two Kashmirs and dropped Pakistan?s principled stand on Kashmir based on 1948 and 1949 resolutions without extracting anything in return. He inked the deceptive peace accord and under the smoke screen of ICBMs and people to people contact he opened Pak society to Indian liberal culture which had a drastic effect on the youth. His skewed concepts of enlightened moderation and empowerment of women were attempts to liberalise the society based on western culture. In his eagerness to present a soft image he eroded our moral values and ethics and turned nuclear Pakistan into a soft state which could be whipped even by Karzai.

To start with 70,000 troops had been deployed along the Afghan border in November 2001 on the request of USA to prevent the fleeing Al-Qaeda and Taliban remnants from crossing over and netting those who went across. Later on in September 2002 Pakistan was asked to flush out the foreigners and their harbourers in South Waziristan providing strength to insurgency in eastern Afghanistan.

When the army opened another front in North Waziristan in late 2005 at the prodding of USA, it sparked insurgency which spread to all the seven agencies of tribal belt including neighbouring 24 settled districts of Frontier Province. Lal Masjid operation in July 2007 sparked the spate of suicide bombing which brought the blaze of terrorism into all the major urban centres. Army and police became the chief targets of militants. The six Jihadi organisations that had been disbanded got linked with the Taliban and Al-Qaeda and assisted the suicide bombers to reach the desired target. The RAW, CIA and FBI took advantage of the melee and its agents added fuel to fire.

By pushing the army into the inferno of FATA, USA cleverly shifted the weight of militancy from Afghanistan into Pakistan. The army despite doing its best to combat militancy on its own soil and losing hundreds of soldiers in the process was ridiculed for not doing enough and was pressed to do more. Concurrently, RAW agents with the active assistance of CIA and FBI elements present within Pakistan went about undertaking clandestine operations to create anarchic internal situation. In the light of a backlash from the militants in the form of IEDs and suicide attacks against military targets inside FATA and elsewhere all over Pakistan, it was considered prudent to enter into peace agreements with them under certain mutually beneficial terms and conditions to promote peace in restive FATA.

This move raised alarm bells in Washington and in Kabul and Pakistan was accused of transferring militancy to Afghanistan. Even Karzai joined the chorus to hide his weaknesses by laying the blame on the doorsteps of Pakistan. Peace deals were censured by USA and all sorts of pressures were levied and inducements offered to refrain from such recourse. Missile attacks through drones were launched from January 2006 onwards essentially to disrupt peace between the army and militants. Musharraf unilaterally allowed these intrusions and instructed the army to ignore them.

Having got the army fixed in the inferno of FATA and destabilised Baluchistan, USA began to paste charges of nuclear proliferation, terrorism and religious extremism. Focus of smear campaign was then diverted towards the army. In spite of the fact that the army had put in its best and its contribution had been much more than any other state, they lamented that Pak army had not done what was expected from it after spending $10.5 billion. (It has now been confirmed that the army received only $1.2 billion to meet its operational expenditure spread over seven years. Rest was spent on developmental works including Gwadar Port and water dams). They kept up the mantra of do more and never got satisfied. Negotiations with the militants and inking of peace deals were resented since in their view it helped the militants to re-launch terrorist activities after resting and refitting. They desired the army to go all out to eliminate each and every militant through brute force without caring for collateral damages.

US propaganda brigade started to float nightmarish scenarios. It was stated that extremists in Pakistan had gained sufficient strength to take over reins of power. It was propagated that the systems evolved to safeguard nuclear assets were not fool proof and that they could be stolen by extremists. It was suggested that in view of their vulnerability they should be handed over to USA for safe custody. Having played the nuclear theme, the spotlight was brought on FATA. Ignoring tens of insurgencies taking place all over the world and presence of extremist forces in almost each country, FATA was projected as the Frankenstein monster. Hair raising stories were got pasted in leading newspapers stating that FATA had turned into a breeding ground where all terrorists and suicide bombers were recruited, trained and launched. The propagandists skipped the hard reality that people of FATA are born fighters and do not need any training.

Swat became restive where the army had to be employed in November 2007 to push out Fazlullah led militants duly aided by RAW and RAM. Hardly had the firestorm in Swat been doused when militants in Darra Adam Khel became restless and tried to takeover Kohat tunnel. The army again had to be dashed there in January 2008 to restore order. The area has still not been freed from militants. Recently they kidnapped and decapitated 13 FC soldiers. Kurram Agency became yet another trouble spot because of heightened sectarian conflict between two warring tribes. Afghan army officers were caught red handed fighting alongside Shia Turi tribe. The area has yet not attained normalcy. The local Taliban captured Jandola, a gateway into South Waziristan on 23 June 2008. The 22-member peace committee formed by Bhittani elders was kidnapped by the Taliban and beheaded. Jandola was retaken by security forces after a hard fight.

Khyber Agency contiguous to Peshawar got infested with criminal gangs and militants belonging to several outfits. Abductions for ransom and incidents of dacoities accelerated. The new civilian government after affecting a change in its policy of dialogue under US pressure ordered Frontier Corps to launch an operation in end June which continued for a month. The situation there is not fully stable since 10 police recruits and Khasadars were abducted on 3 September. Disturbances in Hangu had to be quashed by the army where the militants had captured vehicles carrying supplies for forward troops and had beheaded the drivers. Swat became restive again in July since the ANP government reneged on its commitment of peace through dialogue. Another full-fledged operation supported by choppers and jets had to be launched when the militants captured thirty FC and ten army soldiers on 29 July. Two Chinese engineers were also abducted. 25 persons have now been voluntarily released.

Although one of the major stronghold of Kooza Banda has been taken over and the main supply line opened up but the battle is still going on without any letup and choppers are being used extensively to pound known strongholds of the militants in Kabal and Peucher. Large numbers of militants have been killed but the resistance has so far not been broken. Reinforcement of men and material is being provided to militants from Afghanistan by RAW as was evident from the confiscated arms and ammunition with Indian marking.

To add to the woes of the hard pressed army, the Taliban opened up another front in Bajaur which over a period of time had been converted into a fortress. After seizing Loisam, the nerve centre of Bajaur which is connected with all other tribal agencies as well as Peshawar, Dir and Afghanistan, the militants had begun to besiege Khar, which is the HQ of Bajaur Scouts. It transpired that the Taliban had hatched a plan to convert Bajaur into an independent Islamic state, which was later to integrate Mohmand Agency and Malakand. An army operation backed by tanks, artillery guns, gunship helicopters and jetfighters and in conjunction with Salarzai tribe of Bajaur was launched on 6 August and ever since the two sides are engaged in mortal combat. Huge losses have been inflicted upon the militants including foreigners holed up in their strongholds in Rashkai, Tang Khatta, Loisam, Khazana, Bhai Cheena, Charmang and Loi Jawar. Khar and Uthmankhel tehsils are however in army?s control. The peaceful residents are equal sufferers because of collateral damage and are desirous of normalcy to return.

Having projected FATA as a den of terrorists where all the top Al-Qaeda leaders including Osama and Zahawari were located, Bush upped the ante by saying that any 9/11 like attack taking place against USA in the future would be launched from FATA. US-NATO senior officers and Karzai bewailed that continuous flow of militants from FATA was chiefly responsible for deteriorating security situation in Afghanistan. They lamented that Pak army was either purposely not controlling infiltration or was incapable of bridling the rising tide of militancy and that the army was not trained to fight a guerrilla war.

The next in the firing line was the ISI. It was accused of training and launching Taliban into Afghanistan and that it was involved in the 7 July suicide attack on Indian Embassy in Kabul. Adm Mullen and Deputy Director CIA Stephen Kappes came in a huff to Islamabad on 12 July and expressed their serious concern. In the same month Bush gave a go-ahead signal to Pentagon to conduct attacks inside Pakistan’s tribal areas without seeking government’s approval or notifying it. He declared Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan as battlegrounds. On another occasion he remarked that FATA was a major battleground in the global war on terror.

The month of September saw a sudden surge of missile attacks launched by CIA-Mossad controlled spy drones. Till August, 23 missile attacks had been carried out in FATA. The drones fitted with hellfire missiles are now equipped with chip technology provided by Israel. A tiny metal piece pasted on the intended target enables the drone to home the missile on to it. In early hours of 4 September the first ever ground attack was launched in a village in South Waziristan in which 15 sleeping inmates, mostly women and children were killed. It sent shockwaves throughout the country. A missile attack was launched in a village close to Miranshah on the following day killing six civilians. On 8 September another missile attack was launched at a house belonging to Jalaluddin Haqqani in a village in North Waziristan killing 25 persons.

Amidst the firework, on 9 September Adm. Mike Mullen informed the Congress that to win the war in Afghanistan it was essential to expand the theatre of operation and to operate on both sides of the border since FATA is interlinked with Afghanistan. In his view, unless the safe havens of terrorists in FATA were destroyed war in Afghanistan could not be won. Karzai chipped in by saying that he had been urging the Americans for the last three years to move into FATA and destroy all sanctuaries of the terrorists. The poodle of USA, UK joined in by expressing its support to US sudden change of policy of aggressing into the territory of Pakistan which has acted as the frontline state to fight US war on terror. However, other NATO countries have refused to sail along with US immoral decision and have stated that NATO will not barge into Pakistani territory.

Soon after Mullen’s statement, Gen Kayani gave a hard hitting rebuff stating that no external force will be allowed to conduct operations inside Pakistan. He shunned the misperception that any tacit agreement had been arrived at between him and Adm. Mullen aboard USS Abraham Lincoln on 27 August and added that rules of engagement are well defined. He said that adoption of unilateral approach would prove counterproductive. He spelled out his three pronged strategy of dialogue, development work and selective force wherever required duly backed by the people to defeat terrorism. On 11 September, DG ISPR stated that Pakistan will retaliate if aggressive activities continued.

Undeterred by outrage and protests, another missile attack was made on 12 September in a village in North Waziristan killing 12 innocent civilians. The momentum of attack was kept up by attempting yet another missile attack in North Waziristan on 13 September but was thwarted by our jetfighters. A ground attack similar to 4 September was frustrated by the vigilant security forces and the tribesmen in Angoor Adda in South Waziristan in early hours of 15 September. An attack was launched even on the day when Adm. Mullen was in Islamabad on 17th giving assurance that Pakistan’s sovereignty will be respected. Pakistan’s repeated requests not to violate its sovereignty have fallen on deaf ears.

Sensing from the mood and actions of USA, it has now become apparent that having tightened the noose around Pakistan, it is now itching to deliver the hammer. It is eager to cross into Pakistan territory under the garb of eliminating terrorists based in FATA. Israel, India and Afghanistan are constantly urging USA to take the plunge.

There is a widely held apprehension that USA under the garb of fighting the terrorists in FATA may capture FATA and turn it into a free zone controlled by UN forces. In the process it may extend its reach forward and hit at our nuclear installations. It will however require unanimous decision of all power centres in Washington, NATO and possibly UNSC. Exercise of this option at a time when change of guards in Washington is round the corner and US troops are neck deep involved in two hotspots and are entirely dependent upon logistics on Pakistan and the fact that it cannot hope to win the war in Afghanistan without active collaboration of Pak army, it will be impractical and a risky option to exercise. Resort to missile attacks against suspected targets is a safe option. CIA is spreading fear and panic among the peaceful residents of Waziristan to force them to migrate. Each strike is launched with a hope that it may hit the wanted high value target which could help in up swinging the fortunes of Republicans.

Zia's C-130 was a victim of perfectly coordinated assassination by CIA with the 'ashirbaad' by the then KGB! General Wasam and the US Ambassador to Pakistan had dinner with me 2 days before this crash! So no! i am sory,that i was a spook from MI, but sir , i had a long bad experinces, with the elites of pakistani high society, who keep begging the army genrals some contracts, some backings for thier personal intersts, i surlly , hope that you are not one of them!
comming to the point , killing innocent locals with US drones is not going to solve the problums at all,right now govt is trying to negociate with the locals, to let them agree on some sort of agreement where , they can take a responsibility to secure pakistani lands from any kind of intruders.

i guss they are having some sort of succsess ,in that mission!

Malakand Nifaz-e-Shariat five-point accord finalized

TIMARGRAH: A five-point agreement for the enforcement of Shariat in Malakand Division has been finalized in the successful talks held between the NWFP government and Maulana Sufi Muhammad.

The final talks between Tahrik-e-Nifaz Shariat Muhammadi’s chief Maulana Sufi Muhammad and the NWFP government on the enforcement of Shariat in Malakand Division successfully concluded here after arriving at a five-point agreement.
NWFP government delegation constituting of NWFP Information Minister, Mian Iftikhar Hussain, ANP Central Secretary Information, Zahid Khan and provincial Minister, Haji Hidayetullah Khan on the one hand, while Sufi Muhammad and his shoora committee members on the other, held talks closed-door talks at Timargrah, the headquarter of District Dir at the Rest House here.

Following the talks, while addressing his associates and talking exclusively to Geo News, Maulana Sufi Muhammad said that the government delegation held talks on the draft agreement of Nifaz-e-Shariat and for maintenance of peace. He said that a five-member delegation of Nifaz-e-Shariat would be meeting NWFP chief minister tomorrow in Peshawar, when an announcement would be made relating to the success of the talks. He said that after the enforcement of Shariat, he would be visiting Swat for holding peace talks.

Militants declare 10-day ceasefire in Swat

SWAT: The militants on Sunday announced a 10-day ceasefire in Swat where 3 persons are reported dead and 7 others injured as a result of a mortar shell landing on a house in Kabal Tehsil today.

Spokesman of the banned outfit, Tehreek-i-Taliban Swat Haji Muslim Khan told Geo News that decision of 10-day ceasefire has been made in view of the ongoing efforts for enforcement of Shariah in Malakand Division. However, he said, if fired upon they reserved the right to defend themselves by retaliating.

Meanwhile, 3 people were killed and 7 others wounded when a mortar shell fired by security forces landed on a hourse in Tehsil Kabal.

Curfew has been imposed indefinitely in the entire district.

He even disclosed that Marriot Hotel in Islamabad was being used as a control for UAVs, before the bomb attack. I think you should use "I think" or "It seems that" instead of being sure and taking false stand on issues.

Yes they are Reapers all right, but the base is not PAF Shahbaz for reasons I have mentioned in my earlier post.

Secondly, I am simply amazed at the doubt and suspicion that exists amongst senior members here against the intentions of our own people in the Government who are currently operating this task on WoT. Firstly, I think that a the US Reaper is doing a far better job in killing the country-less foreigners who have made our border areas almost un-livable. It is these foreigners who have motivated & trained the locals (mostly 15 or 16 years old boys) to carry out suicide bombings in Pakistan and across the border. So if it was up to me, I would cut this proverbial head as soon as possible.

Before we criticize every aspects of what our Government does, put yourself in the same shoes for a moment and then make a decision of what would you do in similar circumstances? Once thing is for sure, if the WANA areas are left un attended, they will become the eventual cancer of extremism which will eventually consume the moderate fabric of our society!

These UAV attacks are clearly complicating the issues for Pakistan Govt and not solving it. Air power has been used since First World War times against the tribes of Pak-Afghan border and it has repeatedly failed to subdue these tribes.

Besides that these attacks are grossly misguided, mainly killing innocent civilians like Children and women instead of militants.

These attacks give rise to sense of insecurity among pakistani masses and the armed forces are losing their honor in the eyes of the masses.

Due to british-inherited obsession of enmity with tribes of NWFP, Pak Govt lost 75% of kashmir to Indians when they concentrated their fighter force in NWFP instead of Kashmir as pointed out by Sqn Ldr Shoaib Alam in his article " Fighter Gap".
