How is Pakistan an Existential Threat to India? I thought India felt Pakistan was merely a nuisance and not a major threat, which could not contained Indian ambitions.

Pakistan was an existential threat the day it was created, and gave the opportunity for hostile elements to arm behind its lines, now protected by an independent army.

It is not the army India needs to kill. But the army will be killed first so that we can get to those elements that harm us and you both.

True peace comes after that. Not till or before.

I do know that NATO faced similiar if not as severe asymmetry in conventional in particular tanks against Soviet Russia Red Army on the Iron Curtain. The fear was a massive armourd attack by Warsaw Pact would breal through NATO lines and Western Europe would fall to Soviets. As I said this is pretty similiar to Pak/India equation only that the imbalance is even greater.

So what did USA do to create 'stability' in Western Europe? Deploy Pershing theatre missiles during the early 1980s. I still rememberr there were demonstrations by peacniks in UK because the story was theatre nukes increased the possibility of nuclear war. Nevertheless these systems were deployed with forward US Army divisions in Western Europe to deter Soviet Armoured attack. These were still there until Soviet Union crumbled.

What elements are so threatening to India that it would devote its focus and plan to destroy Pakistan's Army to get to? Also, maybe peace is not how Pakistan plans to "win", but managing the chaos is the best they can hope to do. Similar to how Israel can't defeat its larger neighbors outright, but use their own internal weaknesses against them.
