For Pope Francis, there are limits to free speech.

The Holy Father spoke to journalists in a broad interview on the papal flight to the Philippines about the Charlie Hebdo massacre and the controversy about the magazine’s new cover this week. Religious freedom and freedom of expression, he said, are fundamental human rights. But they are also not a total liberties. “There is a limit,” he said, speaking in Italian. “Every religion has its dignity. I cannot mock a religion that respects human life and the human person.”

He broke it down in everyday terms, something that is coming to be known as classic Francis teaching style. “If [a close friend] says a swear word against my mother, he’s going to get a punch in the nose,” he explained. “One cannot provoke, one cannot insult other people’s faith, one cannot make fun of faith.”

His words come as he leaves Sri Lanka, on a trip that focused on inter-religious harmony and inclusion. The Pope made an impromptu visit to a Buddhist temple, home of the Buddhist monk Banagala Upatissa, and he paused to listen and meditate as the monk offered a prayer. That move, along with his comments on the plane, again show his interest in interfaith engagement.

Twelve people were killed last week at the Charlie Hebdo headquarters in Paris. The satirical magazine was known for its controversial cartoons featuring the Prophet Mohammed.

Le Pope - "One cannot make fun of faith."
Le me - "One can, and one must. One cannot kill for faith."

The pope is a arse-hole. The atavistic instincts of the church are just under the skin. The Hindutva brigade that takes offence at the slightest oppertunity is another group of arse-holes who want to emulate the Taliban. I am a Hindu but I know my religion is bigger than some cartoons or tweets or articles and I have a sense of humour.

Regarding the highlighted parts, in what way are you different from what you are accusing the "pope and hindutva brigade"? Do you know that the pope is highly revered by millions across the world? If you dont agree, voice your opinion and move on. Hurling abuses and hurting sentiments wont make you any different from them.

Oh you think I am an arse-hole. Thats fine by me and the pope can call me what ever he wants. As the inheritor of Saint peters throne which in itself is a lie as St Peter died 600yrs before the papacy was created. Various popes who were paedofiles murderers poisoners thieves embezzlers torturers incestuous and polygamous to name just a tip of the crimes commited one can understand why the church is keen to shut people up.

Dude...cool down! Dont believe in what they say...but kindly refrain from abusing!!! There are people who dearly revere those personalities!!!

how about mocking some one family? like making fun of some one mother or father? and making fun of race? country?

Look at the insults being said about the Pope just because he said something to support muslims. If something is said to support Islam then it is not freedom of speech.

What the 3 men did was wrong.

What France / Charlie Hebdo is, arrogantly, doing now is no way correct. They're insisting on exercising "their" version of "freedom of speech & freedom of expression", which appears like there is no other option to express humour and speech than by mocking at a religion.

Freedom of speech and freedom of expression comes with a responsibility (which the Pope is in agreement with as I understand). But the Western hypocrisy is beyond comprehension.

Truely regretful.

Why make fun of faith? Why not stick to constructive criticism?
This is what i don't understand. Constructive criticism should be allowed but freedom to make fun of and openly hurl abuses is something else all together. Can the same logic of freedom of speech be applied to race, family, relationships and people ? Should i have the freedom to be downright hateful and bigoted towards a particular race in the name of freedom of speech?

how about mocking some one family? like making fun of some one mother or father? and making fun of race? country?

racism is bad , but attacking religions is good... wierd thought process but that's how the world works these days.

What did you expect pope to say, catholics face more mockery than any other faith including islam.
