COAS General Qamar Javed Bajwa called Chief of the Armed Forces of Iran Maj Gen Bagheri.

Rawalpindi - May 12, 2020
No PR-78/2020-ISPR

COAS General Qamar Javed Bajwa called Chief of the Armed Forces of Iran Maj Gen Bagheri. COAS expressed concerns on recent terrorist attack on Pak security forces resulting in shahadat of 6 security personnel near Pak-Iran border. Both Commanders resolved to enhance security measures on either side of the border. COAS said that Pakistan has started fencing the border but will require mutual bilateral cooperation to ensure border security and stem smuggling activity which is also used by terrorists and Narco traffickers for covering their movement. Both also discussed Covid 19 and need to improve border terminals to address such issues. COAS reiterated Pakistan’s desire for regional peace and stability on basis of mutual respect, non interference and equality.

In Sha ALLAH we are doing it , work started . It doesn't matter what they want . PM , Defense Ministry , MoFA , ECC e.t.c of Pakistan has now approved it as well .

Any chance the Army can get MRAPs from the US in a similar manner as the UAE is buying them. excess defense articles; 4569 MRAPs for only $556 million; average price of just over $121,000 each. This would go a long way in protecting our troops. There are probably still hundreds if not thousands of MRAPs still in Afghanistan, which the US will start to move out over the course of this year. The Army should try to secure as many as possible at similar prices. Beyond the vehicles are the communications equipment, and shotspotter sensors (detecting where hostile fire is coming from, precisely) which could go a long way in rapidly detecting threats to our forces. If this is coupled with a remote gun system like the CROWS, fire could be returned very quickly after detection and the danger weapons fire hitting anything other than the intended target minimized.

without landmines will the fence be useful? as locals will always come up with new tricks to smuggle things and people

TREAD! Pakistan-Iran fencing?

Why fencing #Iran border w/ Pakistan is a big challenge for Islamabad, not due to money but for the following reason—I am delineating below:

There are 4 issues related but distinct....

1/

1. Narco route
2. ’s grey economy
3. Human trafficking
4. Border economy

I ll address narco issue first:
Illicit drug trade originates from #Afghanistan; is worth up 2 $70B yearly in #UK streets; up to $3 bill is invested back in region rest end up in western banks. 2/

Porous border is used 4 narco logistics/route.

Drugs cartel funds terrorism, & warlordism & mafias in border regions of , & ; they have influence in weak state like & desperate elements in structures in Iran who do not want stringent border between & .
3/

Second issue is ’s oil economy greased up 2 $300 mills by smuggling into & via border.

Hence it preempts 2 see efforts 4 unfrequented routes sealed by .

was very opposed to fencing last time when it was raised, despite has no border dispute w/ .
4/

Third issue is human trafficking: traffickers use the border to traffic immigrants into #Iran, #Turkey en-route 2 #Europe and vice versa.

They control billions of dollars illicit industry & disincentives 4 local elders benefiting from this economy to accept fencing.
5/

Then there is a small border economy due to trade on both sides of the border along this remote region.

Locals have no access to basic facilities & can not find day 2 day items coming from areas/regions as far a field (i,e, up to 300km away).
6/

W/ the above context, these issues are cause 4 concern 4 Pakistan:

a. reaction of #Iranian state

b. response of narco mafia

c. reaction of local community

d. effects on local market & livelihood

e. fate of grey economy.
7/

But strong logic also exits 4 Pakistan 2 fence the border:

(i) threat of separatists hiding across border

(ii) #RAW’s presence in Chabahar using smugglers 2 destabilise #Balochistan

(iii) no state worth salt functions w/ open borders ....
8/

(iv) huge cost to man security of 44 % of Pakistan ( eg, Balochistan) w/ its 900km open border w/ Iran.

&

(v) #CPEC makes fencing even more urgent 4 its security.
9/

In wake of latest sad tragedy of 6 soldiers martyred this week near Iran border, #COAS Qamar Bajwa spoke 2 his Iranian counter part & Govt agreed 2 fund fencing border.

Challenges apart, can no longer afford open border w/ Iran after almost fencing 70% w/ . End

efforts should be made to determine what legitimate needs the local people and local economy need, and look to. Build a road up from Gwadar as well as down from Quetta should be made. They rest of those effected should be monitored for nefarious attempts at getting around then fencing efforts.

Covid proved we can not afford to have open borders. Had we had secure borders and the means to quarantine people coming in from Iran on, for example, pre-fab huts build by the army, we would not have to spend $8 billion to revive the economy. If we had remained isolated from this virus we could have keep up exports and win some new business related to the response to the coronavirus.

it is moving along Nicely. by end of 2021 all of iran border will be fenced and only small portion of afghani border will remain to complete. by 2025 the forts should be complete too.

Okay thanks 30%means roughly 288km pak-iran border has been fenced. And do you know what kind of equipment are we using currently to monitor the fences from being pulled out?
