Islamabad: A Pakistani artist has become famous for drawing portraits of foreign dignitaries on fine camel skin or leather.

‘Professor’ Hanifullah Khan, an artist who also runs a shop in Islamabad’s National Institute of Folk and Traditional Heritage (Lok Virsa), has previously done portraits of Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman of Saudi Arabia and Malaysian Prime Minister Mahatir Mohammad.

His drawings were presented to both the leaders by Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan during their visits to Pakistan early this year.

Another such masterpiece — a camel skin vase with a portrait of Donald Trump on it — was taken along by Prime Minister Imran Khan’s official entourage to the US during the PM’s recent visit and was presented to the US president.

Though Khan does not have a university degree in fine arts (he has done a 4-year diploma), or related subject, he teaches classes of young artists and imparts to them the subtleties of his peculiar art, which he claims to be his own invention — “Constructive Art.”

Khan says he combines calligraphy with ceramic and oil painting, and he has been doing this since 1982.

Due to his experience in this field, and in view of his age, he is now known as ‘Professor’ Hanfiullah Khan.

Hailing from Quetta, Khan says art and painting have been his passion since childhood and he keeps experimenting.

I had to work delicately to draw the picture [of Trump]. It needed to be perfect from all angles and I am glad my work was appreciated by the officials of the ministry.

About US President Donald Trump’s picture on a camel skin vase, the professor said it took him ten days to prepare that piece.

“Since it was leather, I had to work delicately to draw the picture,” Khan said.

“It needed to be perfect from all angles and “I am glad my work was appreciated by the officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.”

He said a committee comprising of senior officials of the ministry, Lok Virsa as well as artists selected him out of a large number of candidates for the assignment.

“I think they selected me on the basis of my past work,” he said.

Discussing his specialised field, Khan said he opted for “constructive art” after much deliberation.

“I thought even if I learn ordinary painting I shall be regarded merely one more an artist in the country. Therefore, I chose to be different and worked in constructive art,” he said.

For his dedication and expertise in this peculiar form art he has received a number of awards and certificates of appreciation.

So far, he has successfully held 51 exhibitions of his works out of which six were held abroad including two in Riyadh, one in Dubai, one in Sharjah, one in Muscat and one in Los Angeles while 45 within Pakistan.
