PM Imran arrives in China on four-day visit

Prime Minister Imran Khan, currently on an important four-day trip to China, will hold meetings with major Chinese companies in the mining and housing sector on Saturday.

Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Fawad Chaudhry, in a series of tweets, shared PM's schedule of China visit.

Chaudhry said that the PM will commence the day with an online meeting with Chairman of China Energy Engineering Corporation Sang Hailsang, during which they will discuss water supply to Karachi and implementation of the multi-billion- rupees K-4 project.

“Following these meetings, the prime minister will proceed to the Great Hall to attend a luncheon hosted by Chinese President Xi Jinping and First Lady Ping Li Yuan,” said Chaudhry.

He added that later the PM will also hold meetings with the president of Uzbekistan, the prime minister of China and the secretary-general of the United Nations.

This will be followed by meetings with investors in which the management of major companies in the mining and housing sector will hold discussions on investment in Pakistan, the information minister added.

Earlier on Friday, Prime Minister held a virtual meeting with He Lifeng, Chairman of China’s National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and Vice Chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference in Beijing.

During the meeting, Khan said that the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) holds strategic significance for both countries and the project was delivering tangible benefits.

The prime minister, who also held a series of meetings with the executives of Chinese State-owned and private corporate sectors, said Pakistan was offering a conducive environment for investment in Special Economic Zones (SEZs) under CPEC.

In his remarks, the prime minister appreciated the keen interest of the Chinese companies to invest in Pakistan.

The executives who met the prime minister included leadership of China Communication Construction Company (CCCC), Huazhong Technology, Zhejiang Seaport Group, Challenge Apparel, Hunan Sunwalk Group, Royal Group, China Road, and Bridge Corporation (CRBC), Zhengbang Group and China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC).

Notice both India and Iran are not invited, yet GCC block is there.

Very telling. Considering what happened in Baluchistan due to Indo-Iranian nexus.

Pakistan and China have underlined the importance of “all-weather” strategic partnership between the two neighbouring countries and reiterated to support each other issues of core interest.

The statement comes after Prime Minister Imran Khan held wide-ranging talks with his Chinese counterpart Li Keqiang in Beijing on Saturday.

He was accompanied by the foreign minister, minister for finance, planning minister, information minister and other senior officials, according to a statement issued by the Prime Minister's Office.

The interaction between the two leaders was marked by traditional sentiments of warmth, deep mutual trust and understanding. During the meeting, they reviewed the entire gamut of bilateral ties including discussions on the bilateral economic and trade relations, onward march of CPEC and important issues of regional and global concern, read the communiqué.

“The two sides reaffirmed the centrality of the Pakistan-China All-Weather Strategic Cooperative Partnership and reiterated support on each other’s issues of core interest.”

Congratulating Premier Li for organising Beijing Winter Olympics, PM Imran highlighted that strategic ties between Pakistan and China served the fundamental interests of the two countries and were a factor of peace and stability in the region.

He added that successful celebrations of the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations held last year injected a new impetus to the bilateral friendship.

The prime minister thanked the Chinese government for support and assistance to Pakistan in dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic and timely supply of vaccines.

He appreciated the transformational impact of CPEC on Pakistan’s infrastructure, energy, socio-economic development and improvement in livelihoods of the people.

He underlined that Pakistan is committed to the high-quality development of CPEC through its mutually reinforcing industrial, trade, health, digital and green corridors.

PM Imran shared with Premier Li the measures taken by the government to provide policy guidance and support for enhanced Chinese investments in the CPEC SEZs and special technology zones, and for the safety and security of Chinese nationals, projects and institutions in Pakistan.

Exchanging views on the regional security situation, the prime minister highlighted the serious situation in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) as well as the importance of urgent action by the international community to alleviate the sufferings of the Kashmiri people.

Prime Minister Imran Khan met with President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev..

Pakistan seeks investment in six industries

Islamabad is also seeking Chinese investment in the industries of textiles, footwear, pharmaceuticals, furniture, agriculture, automobile and information technology. The newspaper further wrote: "The government is expected to tell the 75 Chinese companies that it could provide access to trade routes to the Middle East, Africa and the rest of the world, offering greater incentives in the shape of reduction in freight costs."

Pakistan relies heavily on China for economic assistance and cooperation. The communist country has already pumped billions of dollars into the Islamic republic under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. Islamabad completed a number of energy and infrastructure projects under the CPEC.

Economist Kaiser Bengali believes that Pakistan is now 100% dependent on China for financial and economic assistance. He told DW that the immediate purpose of the visit is to seek the loan from Beijing, reflecting Pakistan's growing reliance on China.

The only good thing imran khan does is promote national dress, shalwar kameez and Peshawari saplai. Its the most elegant and dashing dress in the world.

Prime Minister Imran Khan met Chinese President Xi Jinping on Sunday, the final day of his four-day visit to the neighbouring country.

According to a handout issued by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), PM Imran met the Chinese president at the Great Hall of People in Beijing.

"This was the first meeting of the two leaders since the prime minister’s visit to China in October 2019," the statement said, adding that the two leaders reviewed the entire gamut of Pakistan-China bilateral cooperation and exchanged views on regional and global issues of mutual interest "in a warm and cordial atmosphere".

The premier congratulated the Chinese leadership for successfully hosting the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing and extended his best wishes on the Chinese Lunar New Year.

"The prime minister underscored that China was Pakistan’s steadfast partner, staunch supporter and iron brother. The all-weather strategic cooperative partnership between Pakistan and China had withstood the tests of time and the two nations firmly stood side by side in realising their visions and shared aspirations of peace, stability, development and prosperity," the statement said.

PM Imran also briefed the Chinese president on his geo-economics vision and the government's policies for sustained growth, industrial development, agricultural modernisation and regional connectivity.

"He lauded China’s continued support and assistance to Pakistan’s socio-economic development which had greatly benefitted from the high quality development of the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). The prime minister welcomed increased Chinese investments in CPEC’s phase-II which centered on industrialisation and improving people’s livelihoods."

The premier also shared his views on "growing polarisation in the world" which threatened to unravel global developmental gains and posed serious risks to developing countries.

PM Imran highlighted that challenges such as climate change, pandemics and growing inequalities could only by tackled through the cooperation of all nations in accordance with the purposes and principles of the UN charter.

"In this regard, he lauded President Xi’s visionary Belt and Road and Global Development Initiatives which called for collective action for sustainable development and win-win outcomes," the statement said.

PM Imran also highlighted that Indian atrocities in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) and the persecution of minorities in India were a threat to regional peace and stability. "He added that rapid militarisation of India was undermining regional stability," the statement quoted him as saying.

The prime minister said that the partnership between Pakistan and China was an anchor for peace and stability in the region and thanked China for its unwavering support to Pakistan’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, independence and national development.

"The prime minister also reaffirmed Pakistan’s full support to China on all issues of its core interest."

Regarding Afghanistan, both leaders acknowledged that a peaceful and stable Afghanistan would promote economic development and connectivity in the region and called on the international community to promptly assist the Afghan people in averting a humanitarian catastrophe.

"Both leaders appreciated the signing of a number of agreements covering industrial cooperation, space cooperation and vaccine cooperation. The two leaders reaffirmed their resolve to building the Pakistan-China community for [a] shared future in the new era," the statement said.

PM Imran also reiterated his invitation to President Xi to undertake a visit to Pakistan at his earliest convenience.

During the meeting, Xi stressed that “the Chinese side firmly supports Pakistan in safeguarding its national independence, sovereignty and dignity, as well as in combating terrorism”, according to state media.

He added that China is willing to work with Pakistan in “aligning development strategies”.

Earlier today, Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry said that PM Imran had left for the airport after meeting with the Chinese president.
