PM issue: Fahim summoned to clarify statements

Sunday, March 09, 2008
By Tahir Hasan Khan

Karachi- PPP leader Makhdoom Amin Fahim rushed to Islamabad on Saturday morning to meet party Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari who summoned him for clarifying his media statements.

According to sources, Fahim, who is a front runner for prime minister’s slot, is in hot waters as the party leadership has taken serious notice of his controversial statements in the media regarding the prime minister issue.

Insiders said that Zardari and other party leaders were surprised as to why Fahim was in such a hurry and trying to create the impression that there was a crisis in the party regarding the selection of a prime ministerial candidate.

Sources, however, claimed that Zardari had previously taken into confidence the worried Fahim at an earlier meeting and he appeared satisfied afterwards.

Fahim then returned to Karachi to attend the wedding of a party leader, but, before leaving Islamabad, he talked to media and expressed concern about the delay in the announcing his name as the prime ministerial candidate.

His statements created a wrong impression within and outside the party and the leadership saw them as “damaging”, a close aide to the PPP chief claimed. According to sources, Fahim was asked to avoid issuing such controversial statements, which might damage the party position in holding negotiation with its allies.

PPP leadership believes that such statements would cast a negative effect on the party position at this crucial stage, when the PPP was busy holding talks for the formation of the government in centre.

Insiders said that Fahim was disturbed with the reports that PPP leaders from Punjab were pressurising the party leadership to nominate the prime minister from the province. Fahim was also disturbed with the reports that stated that the PPP leadership was waiting for the result of Shikarpur-based leader Aftab Shaban Mirani whose election result was withheld by the Election Commission on the stay of the Sindh High Court.

The court had ordered for re-polling in some stations in Mirani’s constituency on his complaint of rigging. However, his rival candidate again approached the SHC on Saturday and obtained a stay on re-polling.

Please give it a rest and stop defending te Bhutto family. Zulfikar Ali Bhutto used the same techniques in Baluchistan and the situation is the same as it was when he was in power.
As far as the agent part goes, I have said this before and will say it again Benazir is an even bigger agent because she said she would do all the things you mentioned above.

You mean suicide attacks bombings and anti Pakistan slogans, where politicians get shot and CJ's get kicked out brutally attacked which isd BTW against the constitution. Wow you need to read the past before you comment on the future.

Benazir a agent wow during her tenure she was under sanctions, and uder Musharrafs tenure there arn't any sanctions he gets a $100-150 million every month, what about the missing persons cases he basicly murdered and abducted 10,000 Pakistanis who are not to be found why cant you just except he is a triator.

First of all I was talking about the situation is Baluchistan, where the situation is the same, but Baluch rebels have just found a new weapon which is sucide bombings. As far as lovking up people under Bhuttos regime more people were locked up. For example Cowasjee, who was one of Bhuttos ministers was locked up because he said something against him. Their were many many other, the fact is Bhutto was more creul then President Musharraf he was more of a dictator.
As far as calling President Musharraf a traitor, atleast he is not responsible for breaking the country, at least he didnt rig the elections, atleast during his tenure the economy has boomed, during his tenure all sorts of development projects are under way all thing we never got when a Bhutto was in power.
As far as the sanction part is concerned you forget when Benazir came into power, the previous government meaning Presindent Zia-ul-Haqs government left more then enough money for her to run the government. But what did she do she wasted it all and then another military government meaning General Musharraf came into power to fill up the governments bank balance. Today Pakistan's bank balance is at an all time high, but again we will have a government who will waste all of it.

I think Fahim is demanding that he be made Prime Minister and he has the right to he is the parties most senoir leader and it is his turn. I think if he doesn't get the job we might see the PPP split. We will just have to wait to see what happens.

The split had already been started as

Amin Fahim was not invited to attend the Muree meeting yesterday.

PPPP lied to the media that Amin Fahim could not attend the moot due to personal engagments.

When the media contacted Fahim he denied outrightly on Television that he was busy rather he said he was not at all invited to attend the meeting and Asif Zardari should mentioned the name whom he claimed asked to have invited Fahim.

On the other hand Chaudhry Mukhtar said PM slot was the right of Punjab and he was intrested for the slot.

Meanwhile Fahim said the PM nomination issue should be resolved otherwise he reserves the right to decided about his future affiliation.

I assume that the split creator is non other than NS ?? maybe? who knows?

Zardari to take over as Pak PM after 3 months: Report

ISLAMABAD: In a fresh twist to the squabbling in Pakistan People's Party over the post of prime minister, party chairman Asif Ali Zardari has apparently said that an interim premier will be named for a three-month period till he enters parliament and can take over the job.

Zardari shared his "little secret" with MPs from Hyderabad in Sindh province on the eve of the crucial meeting between him and PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif in Murree on Sunday, The News reported on Monday.

Sharif and Zardari finalised plans to form a coalition government during their meeting.

Zardari said he had decided to become prime minister in three months and till then, an interim prime minister would be appointed from Punjab, the newspaper quoted PPP sources as saying.

Makhdoom Amin Fahim, the front-runner for the top job who was apparently facing resistance from Zaradari, admitted that he had heard from PPP members about the chairman's decision but refused to comment till he spoke to him directly about the issue.

"I am also not making any comment on this development as Asif Zardari is not a member of parliament," Fahim said.

Zardari had announced shortly after Bhutto's assassination in December last year that his wife had wanted Fahim to be the party's prime ministerial candidate.

However, he changed his mind soon after and talked about a prime minister from Punjab and senior PPP leaders Yousaf Raza Gillani, Shah Mahmood Qureshi and Chaudhry Ahmed Mukhtar were tipped to be in the race.

In his meeting with MPs from Sindh, according to sources, Zardari said he knew that people from the province wanted a prime minister from Sindh.

Keeping their aspirations in mind, he had decided to first nominate a prime minister from Punjab for three months and then he would elevate himself to the post, the sources said.

He also sought the opinion of newly elected parliamentarian Fahmida Mirza on the issue. Mirza endorsed his strategy.

But another MP, Nawab Yousaf Talpur, told Zardari that Fahim was a good leader and should be made the prime minister for the interim period.

Deliberations for PM nomination enter final round

ISLAMABAD, Mar 10 (APP): Deliberations for nomination of premiership candidate at Zardari House have entered the final round and a decision is expected within a couple of days. Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has delayed the announcement of candidate for post of prime minister subject to convening of inaugural session of the National Assembly.

With reports that Prime Minister Secretariat Monday dispatched the summary for convening of the National Assembly session to the President, the PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari continued deliberations with Party MNAs from Punjab.

The meetings of PPP members-elect from Rawalpindi, Sargodha, Gujranwala, Bahawalpur and D.G. Khan divisions with Asif Ali Zardari were part of “consultative dialogue on Party’s nomination for the office of Prime Minister.”

According to statement issued by PPP Media Office, the co-chairman briefed members on issues involved in the selection of PPP nominee for the office of Prime Minister and took them into confidence on talks held with PML-N leaders in Bhurbhan Sunday especially signing of agreement between the two sides.

When asked about progress of consultations continue for some two weeks, a PPP leader said,” Well, the decision is expected within a couple of days as we have entered into final round.”

The leader was hesitant to name the most favorite candidate, however, Makdoom Amin Fahim is said to be out of race completely and he himself had confirmed it to media on Sunday.

“The issue of nomination for premiership candidate has also created differences between the party elite but we have to sort out differences amicably,” senior PPP leader Malik Hakmeen confirmed to mediapersons out of Zardari House.

Malik Hakmeen, a former senator, said “I want to see my contemporary and founder PPP member Makdoom Talib ul Mola’s son Amin Fahim always with us.” Makdoom Amin Fahim has given sacrifices for the party and is most honorable for us, I hope the issue would be solved peacefully, he added. “The cracks within Party would create panic among the workers,” he warned. Meanwhile, a PPP spokesman issued the extracts of Speech made by Senator Asif Ali Zardari to the MNAs.

Senator Asif Ali Zardari was quoted as saying that big borrowers had written off their loans rightly or wrongly but little thought had been given to giving relief to small farmers who were unable to repay borrowing. “Future PPP government would give relief to small farmers,” he added. The PPP co-chairman said their Party was not against privatization but “it would not permit the loot sale of state lands at throw away prices to the cronies of the high and mighty.” “The PPP will investigate each sale and bring to the book those involved in shady deals in the name of privatization at the expense of the people of the country,” he added.

Zardari to be prime minister in three months?

By Rauf Klasra

ISLAMABAD: Co-chairperson PPP Asif Ali Zardari is believed to have shared the multi-million dollar secret with his party MPs from Hyderabad Division when on Saturday night he told them that he had finally decided to become the prime minister of Pakistan after three months. Before that he would bring a prime minister from the Punjab for only 90 days.

Talking to The News, Amin Fahim, the prime minister hopeful, confirmed that he too had heard from the party men that Asif had told the MNAs in his meeting on Saturday night that he (Asif) had decided to become the prime minister. But Fahim said unless he himself heard about this plan from the mouth of Asif Zardari, he would not give any reaction. "I am also not making any comment on this development, as Asif Zardari is not a member of the parliament," he said.

This is the third major policy shift in the stance of Asif Ali Zardari during the last 60 days. First, he had announced Amin Fahim as the prime minister at Naudero, then he changed his mind and started talking about a prime minister from the Punjab, after backing Yousaf Raza Gillani, Shah Mahmood Qureshi and Ahmed Mukhtar.

Now, finally he is believed to have decided to become the candidate for the top slot, after quietly pitching the top four leaders against each other. These four otherwise shrewd politicians were smartly made to fight each other so that instead of getting united against him at any stage, none of them could pose any challenge for him at the time of the decision of the prime ministership.

Meanwhile, it has been formally confirmed to The News by party sources that Zardari had told the Sindhi MNAs for the first time since the race for the slot of the prime minister started that in the first three months, he had decided to bring a prime minister from the Punjab. But, in the same breath, Zardari hastened to add that keeping the aspirations of the Sindhis in view, who strongly feel that the prime minister should be from their province, he himself would take control of the office of the chief executive after contesting the elections.

However, Zardari did not disclose the name of the man who was being brought as the prime minister for three months. But one top source claimed that he could tell one thing on good authority that the prime minister for three months from the Punjab would not be from the three known candidates, who were already acting as the prime minister of Pakistan.

Giving details of the meeting, the party sources said those who attended the meeting included Dr Fahmida Mirza, Naveed Qamar, Nawab Yousaf Talpur, Shagufta Jumani, Pir Aftab Gilani and others.

Sources said as the meeting started, Zardari explained the current political situation and sought their opinion. In his introductory lecture, Zardari said he understood that the people were strongly talking in Sindh that the prime ministerial slot was their right. Keeping their aspirations in view, Zardari said he had decided to first bring a prime minister from the Punjab for only three months and then he would elevate himself to the post.

Later, he sought the opinion of MNA Dr Fahmida Mirza who was sitting besides him. Dr Fahmida immediately endorsed his strategy to elevate himself as the prime minister. PPPP MNA Naveed Qamar, however, turned out to be wiser than the rest when he just made a one-liner comment. "Sir, I have already conveyed you my opinion on this issue in a private meeting."

Likewise, sources said, the rest of the MPs also supported the elevation of Zardari as the prime minister. They observed that his decision to become the prime minister might stop the likely rift in the party, which became clearer after the four prime ministerial hopefuls – Makhdoom Amin Fahim, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Yousaf Raza Gilani and Ahmed Mukthar – laid their claims to the post.

However, inside sources said when the turn of Nawab Yousaf Talpur came, he told Zardari that when he had decided to become the prime minister during his initial address before seeking their advice, then no one could stop him, as he was authorised to take any decision. Nawab was of the view that when the CEC had met in Naudero after the martyrdom of Benazir Bhutto, there was a consensus on the name of Amin Fahim and it was decided that the party would make the final decision. Everybody then thought that in the given situation, Fahim might be the best choice. Nawab Yousaf Talpur is said to have also recounted the loyalty and the role of Amin Fahim since the Bhutto days and said in the absence of Benazir from Pakistan, he had been running the party quite effectively and to the best of her satisfaction. He told Zardari as now he was sitting in the chair of Benazir Bhutto, he was authorised to take the decisions. He told Zardari that now if he wanted to become the prime minister, no one would raise any objection. But he made a "request" to Zardari that the best course would be that instead of bringing someone from the Punjab for three months, he should bring Fahim as the prime minister for this 90-day period. Nawab told Zardari that Amin Fahim was a good party leader and his heart was aching over the current situation as reports were coming that the party might split.

Nawab Yousaf is said to have also raised the issue of the explosive interview of Fahim published in The News on Saturday and said the heart of their old comrade was now burning, which was painful for many. Nawab is said to have told Zardari that there was a feeling that he was being let down.

Sources said the line taken by MNA Shugufta Jumani was also different from others as she kept a balanced approach in the meeting but again she did not oppose the idea of Zardari becoming the prime minister.

Talking to The News, Shugufta Jumani said there was a demand on the part of the MNAs that Asif should become the prime minister as he had played a good role in the party’s affairs. Shugufta said Zardari was the chairman of the party and he could take decisions. "We have given our own opinion in the meeting," she said.

Talking to The News, MNA Aftab Gilani said actually the MNAs who met Asif had expressed their desire that he should become the prime minister. He refused to make any further comment except that this was the demand of the MNAs and Zardari heard them in silence.

When this correspondent contacted Nawab Yousaf Talpur for his comments and verify what he had said on the face of Asif Zardari, he refused to make any comment. "Listen, I have said what I believe during the meeting. This was our internal party meeting and I would not say anything in public on this issue," he concluded.

PM race narrows to two candidates

* Nawaz wants strong prime minister to implement coalition’s agenda

By Zulfiqar Ghuman

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari wants to become prime minister and until the ground is paved for him he would nominate a trustee for the interim period, sources in the PPP told Daily Times on Monday. The sources said a majority of the PPP National Assembly (NA) members-elect (MNAs-elect) in their meetings with Zardari had suggested that he should himself become the prime minister. “The prime minister has to be a person who can outsmart and outshine other political personalities in the country,” the PPP MNAs-elect told Daily Times in background discussions. Nawaz on Fahim: The possibility of Amin Fahim becoming prime minister has been ruled out, particularly after Nawaz Sharif’s between-the-line message to the PPP that he expected the nominee for premiership should be strong enough to implement the agenda of the coalition. In this scenario, only two aspirants are left in the field for the interim period if Zardari finally decides to become prime minister. They are: Chaudhry Ahmad Mukhtar and Shah Mahmood Qureshi, if the choice has to be from the Punjab. Aftab Shabaan Mirani is yet another candidate. Though Benazir Bhutto and Asif Zardari wanted him to be the prime minister, he lost the election and his petition before the Election Commission for re-polling in a number of stations won’t be adjudged until much later. “The decision on nomination has to be taken within a week and in that case the choice is between Ahmad Mukhtar and Shah Mahmood,” a PPP source said. However, some insiders say that Zardari might spring a surprise by nominating a dark-horse like his sister, Dr Azra Fazal, who is an MNA-elect.

PPP decides PM slot for Zardari

Abrar Saeed

ISLAMABAD — Pakistan People’s Party has finally decided that the slot of premiership would be given to some senior party leader for interim period and finally the party Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari would hold the prized slot after getting himself elected to the lower house of the Parliament in by-elections, the sources in the party disclosed to The Nation.
These sources further disclosed that Co-Chairman of PPP Asif Ali Zardari was not ready to take this responsibility and was interested in the strengthening the party at all levels, but due to the compelling circumstances he had decided to step in the office of the PM.
The sources close to the political dialogue going on between coalition partners the other major party in the parleys was also of the view that Asif Ali Zardari would step in the slot of PM as he would be in a better position to run the affairs of the coalition government and could translate the agreement between the main players into reality.
These sources further disclosed that in the one-on-one meeting between Mian Nawaz Sharif and Asif Ali Zardari at the former’s residence in Murree all these matters were discussed in detail, and Mian Nawaz Sharif and his party had said that they would support whosoever was nominated for the slot of PM but at the same time the top leadership of PML(N) had expressed their desire to see Asif Ali Zardari as the executive head of the upcoming coalition government.
It was further informed by the sources that for the interim period the names of senior party leaders were under consideration and the most probable are Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani and Ch Ahmad Mukhtar but at the same time these sources said that it could be anyone from the senior party leaders and one could not rule out the possibility of a dark horse winning the race.
To a question the sources disclosed that the name of Makhdoom Amin Fahim was nowhere in the list of probables for the PM slot as the veteran leader was not ready to take the job for an interim period for obvious reasons.
These sources further disclosed that the ouster of Makhdoom Amin Fahim’s name from the race was finalized by the top leaders of the party after the Murree Declaration after which the PML(N) leadership had extended unconditional support to the PPP candidate for the top slot.
Meanwhile the PPP and PML(N) teams held another round for finalizing the share of the coalition partners in the federal cabinet and according to an insider the talks were progressing well.
From PML(N) side Ch Nisar Ali Khan and Mohammad Ishaq Dar held negotiations with leader of opposition in Senate Mian Raza Rabbani, Syed Khurshid Shah and Sherry Rehman and the share of both the main players in the future government were discussed threadbare.
The sources in the PML(N) disclosed that they were likely to get 40 per cent share in the Federal Cabinet while the decision about the portfolios would be decided in next couple of days.
Naveed Butt adds: The rift between the PPP Vice-Chairman Makhdoom Amin Fahim and party Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari Tuesday seemed to be widening after a party delegation failed to escort Makhdoom to Zardari House.
According to well-placed sources, Makhdoom declined to call on Zardari for a sort of rapprochement saying, “I do not want any more ‘flowers’ from Zardari House in the shape of bitter statements on me of Sherry Rehamn and Khawaja Asif.”
The sources described Makhdoom’s tone so resentful that he used the word ‘flowers being thrown” on him from the Zardari House, the pivot of power these days. Besides, the sources further elaborated that by describing ‘petals showering’ from Zardari House, Makhdoom definitely meant that Khawaja Asif’s statement also originated from Zardari House.
“It is enough for my loyalties with the party spread over the four decades,” the sources quoted Makhdoom again talking in a sarcastic tone. PPP senior leaders tried to bring Makhdoom round and requested him to accompany them to Zardari House, they said. But, Makhdoom outrightly rejected their proposal and said that he could not go there, the sources said.
The sources said, Makhdoom made it clear that he held all the meetings with General (Retd) Pervez Musharraf in the past under the directions of late Chairperson Benazir Bhutto.
“Some people had been released from jails due to my meetings with Pervez Musharraf. After 2002 elections, some other people too had held meetings themselves with Musharraf. Today they are pointing fingers at me. I did not draw personal benefit from these meetings,” the sources quoted Makhdoom as responding to the request of the delegation comprising senior party members mostly from Sindh.
Makhddom, according to the sources, says that he would not split the party but some people are vying for such an untoward occurrence. He believes that they are people no other than those giving statements about him.
“My heart is full of secrets, which, if I reveal to media they could bring storm in the national politics,” Makhdoom warned.

The Nation

FROM , day 1 i keep posting this secret plan of chor of nawabshah (zardari) ! & AS, IT appears clearly this plan was been put by THAG OF LAHORE (NAWAZ SHARIF).

BELIVE it, guys they already had decided how to get the power and how to share lootings. if they were not stopped from the thorne of power , pakistan is surely heading towards worst and biggest crouption of its short history. for this very reason ZARDARI doesnt want the BBs trusted people like AMIN FAHIM or NAHEED KHAN and there isnt a place for people like them in peoples party. any one doesnt agree with ZARDARI, doesnt have any future in the party.

ZARDARI & NAWAZ SHARIF , along with AITAZAZ going step by step systemticly crusing fine. there is no room for AMIN FAHIM, it looks that ZARDARI feel unsecure with AMIN FAHIM and he could not take any risk to nominate AMIN FAHIM as a primeminister even for INTERM PERIOD.

IT, couldbe wiser on the part of AMIN FAHIM to start establishing contacts with old party fellows withn party and outside party, i guss he can become a guide to all the real BHUTTO followers like, FASIL SALEH HAYAT & SHERPAO, SHERAFGHAN NIAZI or EVEN FATIMA BHUTTO. if AMIN FAHIM can do that ,then there is a chance that a party less than CHORs and their supprters canbe formed.
