Dhaka, Nov 12 (bdnews24.com)—Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's visit to Islamabad to attend the D-8 Summit has been cancelled, a senior government official confirmed bdnews24.com on Monday evening.

The decision came three days after Pakistani Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar came to Dhaka to formally invite her. The government then had urged her that Pakistan offer unconditional apology for the genocide its troops had committed during Bangladesh's War of Independence in 1971.

However, the official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity for not being authorised to speak to the press, did not mention the reason for Hasina's not making the visit.

He added the Bangladesh delegation to the summit will be led by Foreign Minister Dipu Moni.

The eighth summit of the heads of state and government of the D-8 countries in Islamabad is scheduled to begin from Nov 22. The Developing 8 (D-8 or Developing Eight) is a group of developing countries with large Muslim populations, namely Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan and Turkey.

Hasina had first visited Pakistan back in 1999 in her first stint in office, since Bangladesh won it freedom from the oppression of the Pakistani rulers in 1971. She had embarked on tours to both Pakistan and India then to ease escalating tension between Bangladesh's two nuclear-armed neighbours.

Bangladesh-Pakistan bilateral engagement in the last four years has been limited during the term of the current government led by the Awami league, the party which led the nation's freedom struggle.

Bangladesh's Education and Commerce Ministers and Speaker visited Islamabad and Foreign Secretary-level official consultations were held in Nov 2010.

The most significant of the visits the leaders of the two countries have made so far has been Khar's Dhaka trip.

Foreign Minister Moni had placed last week Bangladesh's demand before Pakistan for an unconditional apology for the genocide of Bengalees that has been gathering force over the last 41 years.

During the meeting with Moni, Hina Rabbani Khar skirted the issue and responded by advising Bangladesh to look forward and forget the past.

Bangladesh emerged as an independent country after a bloody battle against Pakistan for nine months in 1971. At least three millions people were killed in the massacre by the Pakistani army during the war while more than 200,000 women were raped and murdered.

Following Khar's visit, Pakistan's influential daily Dawn in its editorial said Pakistan should apologise to Bangladesh for its role in 1971.

i dont have any hatred towards Pakistan nor BAL
but we have to solve the issue nicely

it is a bad example and show how anti Pakistan are BAL are

basically i was with Pakistani in this EID we Bangladesh Community ate there we enjoy we did qurbani no problem
we can live easily but when if any one bring past then that will create more hatred and division

PM can go for so many tour but not in Pakistan
PM is destroying the image of BD

before back in 2002 or so Pakistan President already said sorry we have to start small

but to get a formal apology by Pakistan will be needing a right atmosphere
a government who will respect Pakistan and also a government of Pakistan who will do the same

we have to leave the past if we dont then we cannot go forward in our relationship
we will live behind a lot , it is not 1970's any more we should all move on

. . .
if there is no anti pak mentality then there's no BAL

D8 is not jus about pakistan its about all 8 developing countries that shows how much she loves her country

.
Her loss no one is Pakistan is losing sleep over such things
We are quite happy and content

Plus there is no need for any apology of any kind the issues were resolved in 70`s
We look forward to welcome delegates of other nations visiting and look forward to move with Progressive minds in the meeting

Peopel in 70`s decided to pick up arms over alleged ,issues of low wages and social problems and guess what its 2012 and the bad wages and social problems still exist in Bangladesh , their own politicians - have failed miserably many times and its proven

Time to face real challenges and accept , the way things were and still are

The whole Victim mentality only goes so far , if Bagladesh had made a 360 degree turn after 1970 and was progressive like Japan or Hong Kong I would have said you know what Pakistan did not do justice , but reality is things are still pretty much the same in Bangladesh

The only thing that changed is that lady like her now get paid $$$ from government which goes into her Swiss account ...

For Pakistan , her attenence is not mandatory the attendence is mandatory for people who care about welfare of their nation and want to help promote economy , not dinasours stuck in a time loop

Saves us the Kharcha Pani cost :tup for the old lady`s travel:agree:

As far as political reform is concerned , we all know ... she is Bangali version of Zardari and that is that ... nuf said

In Pakistan i don’t think anybody will be too upset about it.

Being eternally Nostalgic does not help in International politics, but if that the way Bangladesh wants to go then its their choice, which they are entitled to make.

Actually she is keeping her personal interests above the interests of the country which in my personal opinion is also equal to hurting her own personal political interests too.

It seems she is putting all her eggs in one basket.

very bad indeed for BD... If you people are expecting a formal apology then you are dreaming wet, No loss of Pak here by this move of BD. Now we should never trust these people. Let them su*k indian as$.

.
This is wrong, I being a strong supporter of an formal apology, think that she is playing on sentiments of her people... its not about your party, its about D-8 and your country...

I like Bengali people for they are sensible, nice and wise, but seriously this is not a right move by Hasina.

actually we r not kissing indians +++ neither pakistanis. however BAL is doing that

its part of her political policy.

.
Good move by Hasina, we should have no relation with that state unless a formal apology is issued.

In which dream land are you living... It doesnt effect Pak even a little bit wether she visited or not. You should have been grateful that our FM went there and invited her. Wake up now.

They can go and jump in the sea, apology has been presented 10 years ago. They need to eat almonds.
Plus, there is no archeological proof of any so called genocide, if they have one, who has stopped them to drag Pakistan to ICHR, when they have their own "independent" govt for around 40 odd years ?
