ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad police have foiled a plot to assassinate President Asif Ali Zardari, police officials said.

Senior officials disclosed to The News that the plot involved a 52-member squad. Several members of the squad have been arrested. Currently, they are being interrogated while the police are making hectic efforts to apprehend the others.

A trained group of 52 deadly terrorists of the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) had planned to blow up the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) building to assassinate President Asif Ali Zardari during his visit to see his ailing father Hakim Ali Zardari. This was to avenge the killing of Osama bin Laden, but the security agencies foiled the plot when four terrorists were arrested on May 13 from the hospital premises ahead of the execution of their plot.

The terrorist group which was given the task to assassinate President Zardari on the premises of Pims during his possible visit to the hospital where his father was being treated, comprised 10 killers who were supposed to blow up their suicide jackets, in a bid to ensure that the president didn’t escape the attack. The plot to blow up the whole structure of Pims was said to have been hatched after the mastermind of the plot decided to apply a no-risk policy to kill the president at all costs.

The terrorist group did not bother to shed the blood of innocent people both patients, attendants, visitors and hospital staff who might have been killed in the worst terrorist attack in Pakistan’s history. But one supreme intelligence agency was said to have got wind of the deadly plot and arrested four members of the gang from the hospital premises, where they were busy in planning the attack.

President Asif Ali Zardari was stopped from visiting Pims by the law enforcing and intelligence agencies to avoid any disaster, the sources said.

According to investigations conducted by The News, the intelligence agencies received information on May 13 that a plot to assassinate Asif Ali Zardari had been finalised by al-Qaeda and the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and he would be attacked during his visit to Pims.

The report said that Qari Shakeel, Naib Amir, TTP Mohmand Agency, was given the responsibility to lead the 42-member terrorist group, prepared to execute the plan. At the initial stage, a group of four activists of the TTP had been deployed in Pims in the guise of labourers for reconnaissance, the report said.

The security of Pims was beefed up and the personnel of the police and intelligence agencies were deployed in and around the hospital, the sources said, adding that, keeping in view the sensitivity of the matter, a high-level team, headed by DIG (Operations), Bin Ameen Khan, was constituted to foil the plot. Every kind of construction work was stopped and eight labourers were detained for further investigation and the police confiscated their mobile phones, adding their links with the terrorist outfits were established through the Tracking and Data Relay (TDR) collected from the mobile phone companies.

A top police officer of the Islamabad police engaged in the investigation of the case, when contacted for his comments, confirmed the report on the condition of anonymity saying, “The police investigator rounded up the suspects involved in the assassination plot so quickly that dozens of people were rounded up within hours of the start of the investigation. Although, we have detained hundreds of suspects from different areas of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and the Punjab but two among them are key leaders of TTP,” the officers disclosed. The officers confirmed that the terrorists had a plan to blow up the Pims building the moment President Asif Ali Zardari entered the building.

The officer denied that any suicide jacket was recovered during the search of the Pims hospital. However, he said the network of the terrorist outfit involved in the attempted Zardari assassination plot, has been broken. He said a group of 42 people was involved in the episode, adding that most of the suspects have been rounded up and the remaining were being hunted down.

The sources, quoted the conversation of a terrorist leader with the other one as: “Haspataal ki security barh sakti hay, kyo na puri building hi urha di jaiey (The security of the hospital is very tight, why not blow up the entire premises?)”.

The sources said they had a plan to attack the building, simultaneously, from different sides to blow up the building completely by suicide bombers, the sources disclosed.

After the assassination of Osama bin Laden, a meeting of al-Qaeda and some groups of the TTP leadership was held in North Waziristan Agency (NWA) which decided to avenge the killing of OBL, the sources said, adding that, Asmatullah Moavia, Commander Janoon-e-Hafza and some terrorists belonging to the Qari Zafar group were among the participants. The meeting decided to carry out terrorist activities on a large scale all over the country. The participants expressed their resentment over the ‘biased’ reporting of the media against the Taliban and decided to target some media establishments too.

The TTP has reaffirmed to increase terrorist activities as well as suicide bombings in retaliation to the killing of OBL, the sources, quoting a secret agency report, told The News, adding that different groups were assigned their targets.

Following the decisions taken by the TTP leadership, different groups were sent to Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Murree, Karachi, Lahore and other cities of the country with their targets, the sources said, adding that, high profile dignitaries and the highest ranking Army officers as well as vital installations were among the given targets.

Qari Shakeel, Naib Amir TTP Mohmand Agency was assigned to assassinate President Asif Ali Zardari, the sources revealed while TTP (Asmatullah Moavia Group) was given the target of attacking GHQ, Chaklala Garrison, COD, AS&RC Rawalpindi, POF Wah and PAF Base Chaklala, the sources added. To execute this plan, they sent four key leaders of TTP to Rawalpindi and Islamabad, including Abdullah son of Abdur Rehman, resident of Ramial, Chakdara, Timargra, Lower Dir District, Zakirullah son of Zarkameen Khan living at same village, Habib-ur-Rehman alias Hazafa belonging to village Thakot, Post Office Challas, district Diamir and an unidentified friend of Habib-ur-Rehman. This group of terrorists was also assigned to target DG ISI House located in Chaklala, the sources added.

A group of terrorists headed by terrorist commanders code named Said Malang and Fiqarmand, was sent to Karachi to carry out terrorist activities in and around Karachi, the sources disclosed, adding that another groups headed by TTP leaders Commander Roohullah and Commander Hazrat accompanying three other people - Taza Khan, 27 and two teenagers - has left for Rawalpindi and Islamabad to target military installations, vital buildings and the diplomatic enclave.

Security of the Presidency and President Asif Ali Zardari has been further strengthened to avoid any terrorist attack. The president’s security squad has been additionally fortified, the sources said adding that Zardari’s faithful guards have been added to his personal security squad.

A top police officer engaged in the investigation of the case said, “We are close to the masterminds of the assassination plan,” adding that this was a matter of days that all the characters of the plot would be trapped.

A top-level police team headed by DIG (Operations) is investigating the high profile case while intelligence and investigative agencies are interrogating the held culprits separately, the sources maintained.
