Pleased With C-130Js So Far, India Eyes More

The American planes are for short term requirement. The long term need will be addressed by the Russian ones.

when the americans will feel that they have no strategic interests in india...........they will stop providing us equipment.........so russia is a far better ally!!!

Send a squadron of falcon IN or Lightning too .. just out of generosity..

I dont know why u people are arguing against C130J
Coz according to IAF , they are great and have proven themselves in recent disaster
Also the rise of the chins have ensured that US is not going to sanction us for a longtime to come
Like i said earlier , it would be great for us to Buy 30 C130Js to replace 57 odd Hawker Siddeley Hawks 748 currently in service
as you guys know our Hawk 748 fleet is 33-38 yrs old and will be scraped in next 5 yrs
C130Js have lifting capability of 20 Tons againsts Hawks 748 with 11 Tons , hence a smaller number of advanced aircrafts can give same airlift capability as larger number of less capable aircrafts

As far as MRTA is concerned , well this aircraft will replace our AN32 fleet , which is currently undergoing MLU
As u guys know that we have ordered only 45 MRTA to replace 105 An32 , Thats coz MRTA will have twice the lifting capability of An32

While SARAS will replace IAF Dornier Aircrafts , with Indian airforce having ORDERED INITIAL BATCH OF 15 Aircrafts

In my opinion it will be better for us to have a smaller Transport fleet with Higher average Lift capability than Having a larger fleet with smaller average lift capability
ie I would like to see a fleet of 140 Transport planes comprising C130Js , MRTA , C17 and SARAS , which will have the same lifting capability as our current fleet of 210 Transport planes

Have you seen the status of our armed forces ? Why India is carrying on one of the largest modernization plans ? We don't have anything we have a huge requirements of fighter jets, transport aircrafts, more awacs are also needed, radar coverage is not even their in NE sector, modernisation of airfield and new airfields are desparately required, one of the biggest armed forces and only a couple hundred transport choppers so we also need huge number of transport choppers, attack choppers and LUH are also needed, new SAMs, new trainers and new air defence guns. Dude what else is left ? We need everything and we are getting choosy for the purchase of transport aircrafts ? We have limited budget and a lot to purchase. 12 C130j and 10 C17 is enough for special operations we should now concentrate on others.

Relax man, I know all about it. The news reports about it constantly as if that is a great thing to be proud of. Modi offered a plan. make India self sufficient and in order to narrow the gap we need to invite private players in. The forces had to undergo such an extensive modernization plan b/c of the lack of coordination in upgrading military capabilities for over 2-3 decades over vrious issues. No doubt we should be picky but the USSR equipment even its heyday has been subpar. india had no other choices, let's not kid ourselves. Of course, at the same time USSR has been somewhat of a steadfast ally even thought they have given China more access to tech and TOT than India....FACT

Russia has been playing both sides (China and India) to reap maximum benefits.....india's needs self reliance and access to the best equipment

This is not something the US has/is willing to sell to anyone, not even its closest allies. Just like F-22 and B-2 they aren't going to let anyone else have this kind of firepower.

Still they will sell it for money

But more should be acquired only if MRTA is not moving ..There is no urgent need to buy off the shelf planes when we can produce the same in house...

MRTA is lighter class than C-130Js mate. The former are supposed to be carrying 18-20 tons of material in a go compared to bigger limits of the J series of C-130. C-130J is basically covering up for IL-76 while C-17 is going to be a new class of transporter IAF will introduce.

Its not compared to B-2 and F-22. You can only use this machine against small or poor countries which do not have proper air defence system or their air-defence system is destroyed or made nonoperational. If India ask for this version they will give us.

I would rather prefer MRTA versions to be modified on similar grounds rather than have this one. AC-130 is a smart spin-off rather than a doomsday weapon as many are awed about. Its main role is to be equal to an assault of 20 gunships at the same time. Basically CAS to ground troops and route clearing that's needed from the 105mm cannons.

It is only a wish that this modification occurs in MRTA. If by some miracle we get a new government, we can expect something like this by 2020.
