Xibe people 锡伯族

Before the Xibe adopted the Manchu script the only way they can mark down what they needed to remember is to tie knots on a string and the person who developed this ingenious method is the legendary 喜利妈妈. Here's her shine on many households

Kyrgyz people 柯尔克孜族

Kyrgyz people 柯尔克孜族
are Turkic people, numbered about 160,000 living in China, is one of the official recognized ethnic group in China. The early Kyrgyz people, known as Yenisei Kyrgyz, lived in the upper Yenisey River valley, central Siberia and were under the rule of Göktürk Kaganate and Uigur Kaganate in the early Middle Age. In 840 a revolt led by Yenisei Kyrgyzes brought down the Uigur Kaganate, that brought to a dominating position in the former Turkic Kaganate. At the height of their power, the center of the Kyrgyz Kaganate moved to Jeti-su, and brought about a spread south of the Kyrgyz people, to reach Tian Shan mountains and Eastern Turkestan, bringing them immediately to the borders of China to whom they were allied with the Tang Dynasty. The Kirghiz Khagans of the Yenisei Kirghiz Khaganate were descendents of a Chinese Han Dynasty general, Li Ling 李陵, and his troops.

The Kyrgyz today in China are predominantly Sunni Muslims with small groups are Buddhists and Shamanists. The Kyrgyz language is a language of the Turkic language family that uses Arabic alphabets (outside China the Cyrillic alphabets are in use). The Kyrgyz in China are mainly found in the Kizilsu Kirghiz Autonomous Prefecture 克孜勒苏柯尔克孜自治州 in the southwestern part of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, with a smaller remainder found in the neighboring Wushi (Uqturpan), Aksu, Shache (Yarkand), Yingisar, Taxkorgan and Pishan (Guma), and in Tekes, Zhaosu (Monggolkure), Emin (Dorbiljin), Bole (Bortala), Jinghev (Jing) and Gonliu in northern Xinjiang.

Daur People 达斡爾族

Daur People 达斡爾族
, numbered about 140,000, are one of the ethnic group officially recognized by China. The Daurs are a Mongolic-speaking people and most of them live in the Morin Dawa Daur Autonomous Banner 莫力達瓦達斡爾族自治旗 呼伦贝尔市 in Hulun Buir, Inner Mongolia autonomous region of China. There are also some near Tacheng 塔城 in Xinjiang, where their ancestors were moved during the Qing Dynasty. The Daur, along with the Ewenki 鄂温克族 and the Oroqen 鄂倫春族, are three little known groups live near each other in the extreme NE of China, western edge of the Greater Khingan Range 大興安嶺.

The Daurs are descendants of the Khitan, a nomadic Mongolic people, who lived in NE China from the 4th Century onward. The Khitans were destroyed by the Mongols during the 13th Century when they established a kingdom further west. The descendents of the Khitans, now the Daurs, served the Qing courts and today they live in the extreme NE corner of China bordering both Mongolia and Russia.

Many Daurs are shamanists. Each clan has its own shaman in charge of all the important ceremonies in the lives of the Daur. However there are a significant number of Daurs who have taken up Lamaism. The Daur speak a Mongolic language and used Qing writing during the Qing rule but today they adopt the Chinese characters as their written script.
