Xibe people 锡伯族


On April 18th, the 29th year of Qianlong (1764), of the Lunar Calender Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty awarded Xibe people as one of the 8 Banner tribes and enlisted them to protect the NW border of China against the Czar Russia. More than a thousand soldiers/officers and their families, of total more than 4,000 people, began the more than 2,000 miles Long March migration westward to Qapqal in Xinjiang (there were also 500 soldiers/officers from each of the Daur and Ewenki ethnic groups and their families). It was a a proud and glorious day for the Xibe people that they can be trusted with such an important task by the Emperor and the country.


It was from this Shenyang Qing temple, 太平寺, the westward migration of about 10,000 people began.

Xibe people 锡伯族


Every year on April 18th of the Lunar Calender it became 西迁节 "Westward migration Day", the most import festive holiday for the Xibe

Men are obliged to dress up as Qing soldiers on that day

Tributes are paid to the leader, 图伯特, of the westward march

Carnival atmospheres are everywhere

Xibe people 锡伯族


Xibe people 锡伯族, numbered about 200,000, is one of the officially recognized ethnic group in China. The Xibes are Tungusic people originally lived in NE China but many of them were ordered to migrate to Inner Mongolia and NE Xinjiang by Qing Emperors for military maneuvers. Today Xibe have strong foothold in Qapqal Xibe Autonomous County 察布查尔锡伯自治县, the only Xibe autonomous county in China, within Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture. The Xibe are the decedents of Xianbei people 鲜卑, a nomadic Mongolic tribe, who the Chinese labeled as Donghu 东胡 in ancient times.

Xibes are traditional Buddists and Shamanist. The Xibe in NE China speak Chinese as the first language while the Xibe in Xinjiang, descendants of the Qing dynasty military garrison, speak the Xibe language - a Tungusic language that underwent morphophonological changes and the adoption of loanwords from Xinjiang languages including Chinese, Russian, Uyghur, and Kazakh.
