I dont blame BJP for taking ayodhya cause, hindus consist nearly 80 percent of population, and why should not their issues be on national politics.
The issue with BJP is they are anti minority, and they come from organization which has hindu supremacist agenda.

They did not stop with temple, they went on fighting with minorities everywhere.

Also, many minorities are fed up with promises of congress, they want to try BJP out.
Dont take it as acceptance of anti-minority politics in the name of nationlism (or pseudo-nationalism)

BJP does have very good leaders, and I am sure they will realize soon hindus wont be swayed by their type of politics.
If BJP was a centrist party, they would have got most anti-incumbency vote(against congress)
