Additionally, debating the 18th amendment or even supporting it's repeal is a completely DEMOCRATIC act.

You can argue pros and cons, for and against, but resorting to smear tactics and calling everyone who is a critic of the 18th amendment a 'boot polishya' or 'Establishment puppet' is dishonest and a suppression of the very same free speech and democracy that those in favor of the 18th amendment continuously remind us of.

This is the reason a few PTI cabinet ministers have started talking about changes in the 18th Amendment of the constitution, which guarantees autonomy to the provinces.

What the author didn't say of course is this isn't the first time 18th Amendment have been discussed

It's a poorly written and argued opinion piece that draws on unsubstantiated claims galore.

The author starts from a baseline where his views (clearly stated in the article) are:

1. The PTI government came to power through rigged elections
2. The Army is calling the shots in terms of appointments to influential positions in the government
3. The Army is against democracy and the 18th amendment and wants to return in a military coup (nonsensical claim since a military coup would care naught for any amendment or the constitution).

Each one of the above claims (just the main ones for now) requires detailed arguments and substantiation, but instead you have hacks like Imad Zafar writing opinion pieces based on them and subsequently drawing flawed conclusions.

No wonder the state of journalism and media in Pakistan is in the absolute toilet currently.

1. Do you seriously think that there has not been any rigging in Pakistani elections and its extension the recent ones?
2. Dont you think that appointing a serving army officer the head of a "economic corridor" sends a different message.
3.The army isn't run by idoits, they know that any direct meddling in state affairs will always bring the nation and them problems. They are trying to prop up a sustainable civil government that does not rob the country of everything. ( while we should also remember the various "political parties" and "politicans" created by said institutions)

Still don't understand the issue with 18th amendment. India gives probably more power to states than Pakistan and even have regional parties having fiefdoms. Result is some provinces are more developed than others.

What happens if the 18th amendment is not in fore and you have a corrupt central govt and honest state govt? The state's will lose revenue and will be unable to do anything. Same as having 18th amendment. I guess it's just political inability to get things done is blamed on this law.

Nothing significant enough in the past 3 elections to change the course of an election. Independent observers have said much the same thing.

Opinion polls by various organizations before the 2018 elections were largely in line with the final results.

Are you referring to Bajwa as head of CPEC, then he is not a 'serving army officer', he's retired. And there are many, many appointments of retired (in some cases serving) military officials to various institutions by US Presidents.

If the 'oldest democracy in the world' is fine with it, why should the Prime Minister in Pakistan not be able to appoint whomever he considers best for the position?

Then why accuse the Army of being behind the repeal of the 18th amendment?

If the Army really had that much control over politicians, and they disliked the 18th amendment, they would have scuttled it when it came up for voting in the legislature.

And even if the Army isn't happy with the 18th Amendment, the author's arguments suggesting the Army wants to get rid of it in order to impose a military coup are absurd and make no sense. A military coup would not care for the constitution, let alone an amendment.
