NTC has clarified a news item circulated in the media wherein Snowden’s documents have been referred reporting that US hacked NTC to spy on Pakistan Military & Political leadership.

The Snowden’s report that secret documents have been hacked by implanting SECONDDATE Malware, a malicious code that is used to monitor or control the network.

The news report said that in April 2013 successful attacks against computer system in Pakistan were made. It has been mentioned in report that hackers used SECONDDATE malware to breach Pakistan Telecommunication VIP Division containing documents pertaining to Pakistan Telecommunication Green Line communication Network.

NTC, in a press statement, clarified that the Green Line communication Network is a dedicated standalone hardware intensive system with no connectivity with internet cloud.

The Green Line Exchanges of NTC are connected with secure fiber link having no link with public Switching System of NTC or any other Telecom Operators, the NTC said. Therefore, the possibility of any intrusion in main communication lines under question is ruled out and accessing these exchanges through internet or implanting any malware is extremely remote.

NTC Green line exchanges are secure and not prone to hacking.

However, the NTC admitted, cyber security is a serious global subject and technically measures for cyber attacks to compromise internet connected infrastructure are continuously being developed.

At the same time protection measures are also continuously being put in place. In the same spirit NTC is continuously deploying state of the art counter hacking measures to ward off untoward incidents.

ISLAMABAD: A spokesman for the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication refuted on Monday a news report appearing in a section of the press about hacking of some secret documents of the National Telecommunication Corporation (NTC).

The report had claimed that the network had been hacked by implanting ‘SECONDDATE Malware’ — a malicious code used to monitor or control a network.

In a statement, the ministry’s spokesman said: “NTC Green Line exchanges are secure and not prone to hacking. The Green Line communication network is a dedicated, standalone hardware-intensive system with no connectivity with internet cloud.”

The exchanges, the spokesman said, were connected with a secure fibre link, having no link with the public switching system of the NTC or any other telecom operator.

“Therefore, the possibility of any intrusion on main communication lines under question is ruled out and accessing these exchanges through internet or implanting any malware is extremely remote.”

However, the spokesman said, cyber security was a serious global subject and technical measures for thwarting cyber attacks were continuously being developed.

He said protective measures were in place and the NTC was constantly adopting effective counter-hacking measures to avoid any security breach.

If you look closely, this slide actually shows the floor plan of the "Green Exchange Islamabad Room".

If there is anything certain in cybersecurity, it is that no system or network is un-hackable. Perhaps barring next gen quantum encryption which can (potentially and theoretically) be completely secured. Although that itself is a debatable point.

Even if NTC statement was to be believed, which I do not, it is often said that your network is as secure as its physical security. What that essentially means is that if I want to hack your system, doing it remotely might be hard (not impossible but hard assuming you are a smart entity which has deployed techniques to safeguard your network). However, it would do you little good if I can physically get close to your machine in an old fashioned way and deploy my malware using a dirt cheap USB stick.

Given that in the original disclosure of NSA activities the server room's layout of NTC green line network is attached, it is completely possible that they compromised security by physically infiltrating the location using an insider...

Actually, i m dumb in this area....so thats why no clue what this is all about? but I m sure if US can spy on closest allies like UK germany then they must have had spied on asian countries as well....

Frankly, I posted this thread hoping for more information on the "Green Line" network because there is very little on the internet.

Going by the slide (Page 3) I posted earlier, it states:

• Four machines in the VIP division who have Green Exchange related document on their machines were successfully implanted.

• Four new CNE accesses were gained for the VIP division and a baseline of collection related to the Green Exchange was established.

In short, NSA gained access to eight (8) machines inside the NTC's VIP division around April 2013. Four (4) of these machines had documents on them that detailed Green Exchanges. The data collection from these eight (8) machines provide NSA a rough baseline of what they are dealing with and how to develop further access. Now, NTC might be right when it claims the Green Line network is safe but that doesn't matter because the machines using the network are not safe. However, this type of access will not satisfy NSA because its very limited. Put it this way, if you are NSA, you hack the telecommunication provider than an individual smartphone. Having access to the telecommunication provider implies you have access to all the smartphones.
