The situation in Syria is grave by any definition and becomes ever more so with each passing day. More than 10,000 civilians have already died in the ongoing internal strife while more than 0.23 million men, women, and children have become homeless and have been forced to take refuge in neighboring countries of Lebanon, Jordan, and Turkey. By far, the largest number of Syrian refugees is in Turkey which has generously opened its doors to these desperate people and has been trying to accommodate them as much as possible. The Turkish government and humanitarian organizations have set up camps for Syrian refugees where more than 25,000 of them currently reside in tents while ever more continue to arrive on foot and by the truckloads every day. The situation in Syria is increasingly being compared to that of Bosnia in the ‘90s.

President, AlKhidmat Foundation, Dr Hafeez-ur-Rahman recently made a trip to Turkey and was able to observe the condition and assess the needs of the refugees first hand. Well aware that food and education for children are fundamental concerns for refugees, Dr Hafeez-ur-Rahman donated financial assistance and food items among the refugees on behalf of AlKhidmat. He later visited a makeshift school and distributed schoolbooks and stationary among children. AlKhidmat has begun preparations to dispatch a consignment of food and other items in April 2012.

HOW ALKHIDMAT IS HELPING

Alkhidmat Foundation Pakistan is helping Syrian refugees by working with other humanitarian groups in Turkey-Syria border area to build emergency relief capacity for Syrian refugees who have fled escalating violence in their hometowns.
Syrian families escaping to Antakya (Turkey-Syria border) are receiving emergency aid, including the following:

1 - Food packets, consisting of rice, sugar, oil, beans, cheese, and salt
2 – Medicines, especially for diarrhea, malaria, other infectious disease, etc
3 – Shelter, such as tents and related material
4 - Clothes, shoes, bedding, and other items of daily personal use

Following are some photographs of President, AlKhidmat Foundation, Dr Hafeez-ur-Rahman, at the Syrian refugee camp on the Turkey-Syria border, in which he can be seen talking to school children and some items of the assistance which were delivered to Syrian refugees.
