Hello there,

I am trying to figure out any specific sites/places to learn about the history taught in Pakistan before that is just before "Islamization" of Pakistan. For example, what were the names of Peshawar, Karachi and Lahore before they were named that? What exactly happened there? What happened to the indigenous population there?

The place I am right now is this: Pakistan's western areas were more "inter cultural" than any other place in Indian subcontinent with Persian, Arab, Indian, Mongol people mingling. I am trying to figure the research behind how these different fabrics came together and then homogenized into Islamic culture.

I think it would make a fascinating read on how all these different ethnic people once lived together and if the place still has the diverse ethnicity.

Thanks,

Lahore has been known by many names in its ancient history | Lava, Labokla are two of the old names

Karachi was known as | Debal

Peshawar was known as | Pushkalwati

Taxila was Takshashila.

Quetta- Kot or Kota meaning fort

Lahore- Lav pur(Rama's son Lav's abode)

Are you sure? Because I read somewhere that in ancient times there were two princes Lahu and Kasu. Lahu settled in Lahore and Kasu went and settled in Kasur, and hence the names. Could be wrong though.

I read in a history book that Karachi's name was first Kalanchi, named after a famous dancing woman of the town. But others and almost all of Karachiites believe that it was Kolachi, named after a famous pious woman of the town.

Another interesting history is behind the naming of the city of Jehlum. The king at the time had stables in a town, now the city known as Jehlum. In one of those stables the King's most favorite horse was kept. That horse's name was Jehlum. So the town's name became Jehlum after the horse and then the nearby river's name became Jehlum after that town.

Almost all the cities retained their previous names after the partition, except for a few like Faisalabad. Tried to change Jacobabad's name too but it didn't fly with the locals.

Aha! So I wasn't that far off. Maybe dialectal differences.

Thanks,

Peshawar was called Purushapura which lied in Gandhara. Sialkot was called Sakala the capital of Madra kingdom.

Taxila was Takshashila.

Quetta- Kot or Kota meaning fort

Lahore- Lav pur(Rama's son Lav's abode)

Takshashila and Pushakalavati were named on two sons of legendary king Bharata of Ayodhya- Taksha and Pushakala.
