Sir i am in agreement, that this law is being abused. The reason the media won't highlight the muslim victims of this law is simply there is little or no masala! It's really that simple, two things make headlines, dhamaka and sex, obviously the dhamakadar the news the more likely the news agency breaking the news will get syndication from foreign press or the reporter might get a better assignment.

It has been abused how many times.And if it has been abused than in what circumstances? These two question requires inquiry before jump to any conclusions. Once democracy strengthens in our country things will look more and more good.

I second that! This law is seriously being abused to shut people up and threaten them. This really is getting out of hand now!

The problem is not with the law in its entirety, which should not be completely done away with. Rather, the problem is with the lack of requirement of intent in charging a person of blasphemy, specifically when the act involves the defaming of Prophet Muhammad.

Otherwise, in rest of the sections, A & B, there has to be a proof of malicious intent.

Pakistan is a democratic Islamic state and in democracies, majority rules. People there should have the freedom to live the way they want to. If they want to live with strict codes formed at the dawn of Islam and want to include the blasphemy laws to protect their sensitivities, then they have all the right to have that law.

Besides, the number of people criticizing such blasphemic acts and participating in mass protests against blasphemers clearly shows that that is what the people want.

Should never do away with what people want in place at all times.

If you wish to blame, blame the courts and the police that entertain spurious cases and make a mockery of this law.

Sensible post, but this law was enacted during a very dark time in Pakistan's history and whilst the conviction ratio for the law is low. It is being heavily abused and will remain open to abuse due to how the Sharia court system deals with the law according to the Sharia system.

If anything this law needs to be heavily amended, but no mullah will agree to that.

Blasphemy law for any religion should be banned in this world. If a religion can't be tolerant then it means it does not respect its core values of tolerance and Non violence.

its been a big shame for pakistan now man . you know that qadri SOB shot dead salman taseer not because salman said something to prophet but he said this law is black .so he shot him and bloody pakistanis rose patel on murderer in court .one can see were nation is reached . sooner or latter they will change it but then they will be so late . these type of stone age laws can't go long now .

Of course the abuse is quite troubling but I'd disagree from removing it due to two reasons :

(a) Expediency - There is a huge group (from Moderates to the Hardliners) who support this law so unless we want a backlash from the public I won't be in favor of removing it just like that; going cold turkey on it would be counter-productive. Instead the change should be from within the society whereby the civil society must take it upon themselves to bring in intellectuals (religious or otherwise) to try to educate the society into why, if ever, this law should be removed to begin with, so that when the time comes any Government would be willing to remove it to appease the will of the people. Right now - No one will ! No Government would be willing to commit political suicide by even touching this law.

(b) This is one of a hundred other laws that are used & abused to no end in Pakistan & so any change would be superficial or cosmetic at best. So I say forget the law & revamp both the judicial & police system instead; make them truly impartial, competent & corruption free by making them free from any political interference, by inducting educated & well trained individuals in its cadre & by having a stringent system of accountability looming over them.
