The Ministry of Science and Technology is now gearing up to produce stents for heart disease treatment locally. Prior to this, the Ministry achieved great success in manufacturing Pakistani ventilators. With the same enthusiasm, the authorities are now set to reach another milestone.

A summary has been prepared and sent to the Drug Regulatory Authority Pakistan (DRAP) for approval. The manufacturing is expected to begin next week after approval.
The DRAP issued a manufacturing license to the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) in March this year. The Special Assistant to Prime Minister (SAPM) on Health, Dr. Zafar Mirza, highlighted the approval to produce local cardiac stents while speaking to the media and said:
The development is part of the reform process in DRAP.
For the first time in the history of Pakistan’s health sector, international standard stents will now be manufactured locally. The steps being taken to accomplish this vision alone are a significant development for the country.
According to the news channel, each indigenous stent will be priced at Rs. 80,000. The cost of local stents will be Rs. 220,000 less than the cost of imported stents (priced at Rs. 0.3 million).
The SAPM commented on the initiative and said:
The move to locally produce stents will lower the stents’ price while generating a positive impact on the market and the users.
