Days after India joined the Missile Technology Control Regime, Pakistan authorities on Thursday said that Islamabad would choose to become a part of the regime at an "appropriate" time.

Pakistan, despite harbouring a keen interest in regimes that control exports, did never express a wish to join the MTCR, which is dominated by the West and controls exports in missile and UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) technology.

Pakistan has "fairly" succeeded in developing a missile programme and various short- and medium-range missiles.

India became the 35th member of the MTCR this week after a consensus emerged in the grouping on admitting it into its fold.

As an MTCR member, India will now have access to crucial missile technologies from across the world.

That's impossible because India is a member of MTCR now and to be MTCR member you need consensus of all members so opposition solely from India is enough to block India's entry.

Even if India dsnt oppose Pakistani membership ,i sure there are 34 other reasons why Pakistan cannt become a member.

question is why does pakistan wants MTCR membership ?

as just yesterday there were couple of members arguing me that MTCR is a joke and we dont need it as we are already getting everything associated with its membership from china ... i wonder what happenned now :what:

Of about 94 MTCR restricted technologies
Pakistan posses about 39 of them

Pakistan can import certain technologies and lessen its dependence on Chinese to a certain extant.

As per MTCR that is not true. It improves the chances of acquiring. But India is subject to MTCR rules regarding any export of missile technology

India will oppose at the appropriate time.
So best of luck.

Inclusion of India into MTCR is another sign of us getting the membership too. Who knows what discussed behind the doors, whereby, as many of our friends cross the border says India will oppose, that China did so or not. Someone may pay attention that if the membership will not be given upon any single opposition vote then one must think about China's favour to India in many contexts to come. Timing is all that one must keep in view. Let's hope for the best.

You are right, China might just convince us to do a quid pro quo on MTCR and hand us NSG. Who knows what may go on behind closed doors ... :-)

Not to drag in the NSG thing but one thing surely to understand, as you have brought into notice, that China lastly opposed the Indian NSG bid yet failing to provide a membership even USA was not happy to hear it however, the MTCR favour will result in returning a favour and to the some extent,

NSG thing will done a lot more different parameters and for the same, one should start with NPT that is necessary before going for NSG but interestingly, those will be different times and who knows. It was US itself that put NPT condition for NSG membership and so far by looking at development, India wants to be the first exceptional case for NSG without NPT that holds less possibility.
