Pakistan will implode if the US does not leave Afghanistan

The continuing US presence in Afghanistan fuels extremism in neighbouring Pakistan

Imran Khan

The Observer, Sunday 9 January 2011

Punjab governor Salmaan Taseer was assassinated last week.

The assassination of Salmaan Taseer has shown only too clearly the growing extremism in Pakistan, the radicalisation of its society and the polarisation that is taking hold. This is not just between the religious and the secular, but also the polarisation that the "war on terror" has caused between the various religious sects.

There were no Pakistanis involved in 9/11 and al-Qaida was then based in Afghanistan. The only militancy we were suffering was among the tribal groups who had fought against the Soviets and whose idea of jihad was a war against foreign occupation. Yes, there was sectarian violence, but suicide bombers were unheard of.

So after 9/11, when General Musharraf chose to ally with the Americans in the "war on terror", it was a fundamental blunder. Overnight he turned the jihadi groups created to fight foreign occupation from supporters into enemies, people prepared to fight the Pakistani army because of its support for the US invasion.

Musharraf then made a second mistake in sending the army into the tribal areas. Our own tribespeople immediately rose up in revolt. Rather than co-opting these people – and, remember, every man is armed – we made new enemies. Then along came the American drones to kill more of our people. Soon, the American "war on terror" was seen as a war on Islam by the majority of Pakistanis and certainly by the Pashtuns in the tribal areas. Terror and extremism intensified.

Every year extremism gets worse, our society becomes more radicalised and the bloodshed grows. This is how you must see the context of this assassination. Society is now so polarised that because Taseer criticised the blasphemy law he was seen as criticising Islam. But that was not what he said. This assassination would not have happened before the "war on terror".

Imams of different sects are being killed now, and mosques and churches bombed. The fanaticism keeps getting worse. As disturbing as Taseer's assassination is, just as disturbing is the way his assassin has become a hero. That is why this whole thing is so dangerous, it shows where we are headed.

I have been predicting this from day one. There is no military solution in Afghanistan, only dialogue, so the supreme irony is that in siding with the Americans all we have done is send the levels of violence up in Pakistan. The "war on terror" has weakened the state and then, thanks to the George Bush-sponsored National Reconciliation Ordinance in 2007, which allowed an amnesty for all the biggest political crooks, we now have the most corrupt government in our history. The "war on terror" is destroying Pakistan.

Clemenceau once said: "War is too important to be left to the generals." He was right; for us it has been a disaster. There is incredible anti-American sentiment here, and the drone attacks only fuel that hatred. We need a change of strategy, otherwise the worst-case scenario will be achieved here; an unstable nuclear state.

It's not a question of there being no room for moderates, it's that moderates are being pushed towards extremism. Taseer didn't say anything anti-Islamic, he just questioned the blasphemy law and whether it should be used to victimise innocent people. His death has caused many moderates to think there is no point in being a martyr. If it makes people such as myself think twice about what we say, then where does that leave us? We are all now at risk.

Crime in Pakistan is now at a level that breaks all records. Yet 60% of the elite police forces are now employed protecting VIPs. Where does that leave ordinary people? Young Pakistanis are being radicalised and the Taliban grow in strength. The US is no longer fighting just the Taliban, it is fighting the whole Pashtun population.

The consequences for Pakistan, with its population of 180 million, are enormous. And there is an impact, too, on Muslim youth in western countries. Graham Fuller, the CIA chief of staff in Kabul, wrote in 2007 that, if Nato left Afghanistan, Pakistan security forces could overcome terrorism and extremism. But, as long as the Americans push Pakistan to do more in the tribal areas, the situation will worsen – until Pakistan itself implodes.

taliban is nightmare whether it is afghan or ttp.if u.s is targetting them then pak army must join them on ground.thats good.they are creating havoc all over world.

America has targeted the taliban since 2001 in Afghanistan. What has that achieved? Only more expansion and more terrorism. If America did not invade the cursed nation of Afghanistan in the first place there would be no terrorism at such a high scale. It's better to stop wasting money and leave Afghanistan for ever.

Pakistan paying the price for it's diplomatic blunder, hope someone can turn around things for pakistan.

I am beginning to like Imran Khan more and more. He seems to be the only public figure who has a clue and is not pandering to Westerners or Saudis.

This wasn't highlighted, but is the key point in my view.

So before 9/11, PA & Jihadis were fighting for same cause, whatever it was. Now US divided them & turned them into enemies. What is he suggesting? Pakistan should reunite with Jihadis once US leaves? Somebody should tell him that same strategies of using terrorists as strategic assets has brought Pakistan to where it is today. He doesn't have any new ideas, he is basically talking about going back to square one.

Americans should leave Afghanistan asap, stop ALL military or economic aid to Pakistan. Simultaneously, Pakistan and India achieve at least an interim peaceful co-existence agreement. Then there will be no need for any 'strategic depth' for Pakistan. No need for India to worry Pakistan. Afghans will also get some peace. This will enable Pakistani military to free up its resources to crush to pulp all these fake jihadis.
I don't think the status quo can last long. At least not for Pakistan unless we want the country fast descending into something like Somalia.

Let us not forget that the Americans are there not to help Afghans or Pakistanis but because of 9/11. They will leave Afghanistan when they are convinced another 9/11 won't originate from that area. They really don't care what the Afghani or Pakistani public opinion is.

that is why they say that it is pakistans own war and no one else's...

i feel that the opposite is true....

consider this

if the US leaves
-the taliban will take over afganistan(might be a happy situation for Pakistan but what they have their eyes on Pakistan? the TTP might be helped by the afgan taliban just because they are alike)
-Pakistan loses its only means to nag the US....
-the US is free to not care about Pakistan's threats to pull out troops from the border
-the US will stop all its aid to pakistan(thats really a hell of a loss/,,,China does not give as much aid as the US.)
- the US will be free to side with India completely in all matters without the headache that Pakistan can put it into....

As sad as it sound to have an Afghanistan under Taleban rule let that be if the Talebans are of Afghan origin. Let there be no interference in Afghanistan by anyone and that includes TTP not allowed into Afghanistan. Afghans will sort it out on their own eventually.
About the US present in Afghanistan to prevent another 9/11 I really don't think it will make much of a difference to stay there anymore: Al-qaida is decimated as an organization and if another attack against America is launched it is likely to come from radicalized Muslim expats--much like the first 9/11. Effective policing. Effective intelligence sharing. They are going to be better than carpet bombing.

the whole basis of american intervention is flawed - you cannot declare a war on a noun.

you cannot guarantee with 100% certainty that something will not happen.

its a mythology created so that the americans can reshape the world.

no one can really question them because they are powerful.

pakistani's face an uphill struggle because they have to frame their discourse around a mythology created by the US.

and because the US created this mythology they can add whatever demons they want.

this is the problem.

Excellent article and very true.

Pakistan definately made a bad move by making itself a 'sell out' to its citizens for the greater objective of pleasing the declining empire of the USA.

A LOT of pashtuns have been alienated and marginalized by pakistan's actions and what will eventually happen is that the NWFP will become today 'south Sudan'.

This is the reality as the separatist movement is growing alongside the radicalist movemement and when they both join its going to be fireworks.

Are you denying that the 9/11 terrorists were given shelter in Afghanistan ? Or you are calling 9/11 a myth?
Pakistan cooperates with the American WOT not out of will but because they don't have a choice. Its true that the WOT has make Pakistan a target for the militant groups. But why? Only because Pakistan was giving sanctuary for the militants at the first place. They were planning attacks on foreign countries from Pakistan . When the Pak army attacked them, they have started attacking the back.

Pakistanis must understand that neither the Northern alliance or the Taliban have accepted the Durrand line as the international border.
