AUCKLAND: Falling out of favor of team management for four straight World Cup games, wicket-keeper batman Sarfraz Ahmed said he was under tremendous pressure against South Africa and felt as if it was his debut match after winning ‘Man of the Match’ award.
Sarfraz Ahmed played a brilliant knock of 49 off as many balls and took one of the best catches of the tournament in the match. In all, he took six catches but the catch of dangerous batsman Hashim Amla was next to impossible and he might not had lost his wicket if Umar Akmal had played as glovesman instead of Sarfraz.
Taking six catches – Sarfraz has also equaled world record of taking most number of catches in an ODI.
“It was a high pressure game for me and I felt as if I was playing my debut match,” said a satisfied Sarfraz while receiving Man of the Match award during closing ceremony.
“His (Sarfraz) technique is not right for Australian and New Zealand conditions,” Coach Waqar Younis had said when he was asked for the reason for not trying Sarfraz when opener Nasir Jamshed was struggling and Umar Akmal was dropping catches behind the wicket.
And during post match press briefing, expectedly, Waqar had little to say on the topic. He didn’t even answered a reporter asked about Sarfraz’s performance and the reason why he was not played earlier.
“All thanks to God that I played well against one of the best bowling line of the World,” Sarfraz added.
