Pakistan vital for balance of power in Asia: US expert
By By our correspondent
LAHORE: Pakistan has a critical role in maintaining the balance of power in Asia and it will continue to enjoy US attention.
These views were expressed by US foreign policy expert Walter Russell Mead, Henry Kissinger Senior Fellow for US Foreign Policy at the Council on Foreign Relations, while delivering a keynote lecture US Foreign Policy towards Pakistan before and after 9/11 at the Punjab University on Friday.
Mead said the cold war between the US and the USSR was a struggle over the future of Europe, but after the end of the cold war, the Middle East had become the focus of attention.
He said, In my opinion, Asia will be priority for the US in future because of its growing economy and new market while Pakistan is very important for the stability of Asia. He said though Pakistan was not as big as China or India in terms of size and economy, yet it had an important role because of its geo-political position. Its nuclear power is an advantage, he observed.
He said the US had developed closer relations with India to maintain the balance of power in the region. A cold war between China and the US over Asia is also possible, he added.
Talking about the US war on terror, he said Muslims were not a problem in the war rather they were the solution. He also rejected the theory of clash of civilisations and said US-Israel relations were overestimated by the world.
To a question, he said a democratic Pakistan would be welcomed by the White House, adding the US had the disadvantage of a military government in Pakistan. Pakistan Study Centre Director Prof Dr Mussarat Abid also spoke on the occasion.
