It alerts two jawans who took on the attackers despite a power outage early in the morning
An adopted stray dog in the CRPF’s Sumbal camp helped in thwarting a major suicide strike by four foreign terrorists early on Monday in Kashmir’s Bandipora district.

Constable K. Dinesh Raja, 25, who was manning a picket at the gates of the the 45 Battalion camp that houses hundreds of personnel, toldThe Hindu that the dog started barking around 3 a.m. at the bushes after seeing some movement there. The four terrorists hiding there were killed later.

Hour-long encounter
“We heard the dog bark and suddenly a burst of fire came from across the road. It seems the terrorists panicked. Two persons were hiding in the bushes and I fired at them. My colleague Prafulla Kumar, who was manning the watchtower also fired from above. Two terrorists were injured in the first round of fire but since they had come to be killed, they charged on,” said Mr. Raja, who has been posted at the camp since December last.

CRPF commandant Iqbal Ahmad said the encounter lasted for more than an hour. The forces also had to face a power outage during the incident. “There were two more terrorists who had taken position nearby. They provided covering fire to the other two to help them storm the camp. Our Quick Reaction Team was mobilised and in the middle of the encounter, there was an electricity outage. We fired illuminating smokes so as not to lose track of the terrorists as they would have escaped taking advantage of the dark,” said Mr. Ahmad.

Mr. Kumar (25) of Munger in Bihar, who has been posted at the camp for four-and-a-half years, said since he was at a height, he could see the terrorists were barely 40-50 metres away from the camp. “The injured terrorists continued to charge towards the camp, I kept firing till they were killed,” he said.

One civilian was killed as clashes erupted during a search and cordon operation of security forces against hiding militants in south Kashmir’s Shopian district on Tuesday evening.

The security forces’ search party faced a group of protesting youth at around the sunset, as the locals were preparing to break the fast in the holy month of Ramzan.

Security forces opened fire into the crowd of protesters, who were lending support to the trapped militants to escape the trap.

Srinagar: Three militants and a jawan were killed along the Line of Control (LoC) in the Naugam sector in north Kashmir's Kupwara district today, as the Army foiled yet another infiltration attempt.

According to the Army, four infiltration bids, aided by Pakistani forces, have been thwarted along the LoC in north Kashmir in the last 48 hours, in which seven militants were killed while a jawan also lost his life.

The Army has foiled multiple attempts made by the Pakistan army to push armed infiltrators across the LoC, the Army's Northern Command said in a statement on Thursday.

"In the last 48 hours, infiltration attempts have been foiled at the Gurez, Machhil, Naugam and Uri sectors. Seven armed intruders have been eliminated so far," the statement said.

Large quantities of arms, ammunition and war-like stores have been recovered, it said.

According to the statement, three militants were killed in the Naugam sector today, while four were killed in the Machhil sector yesterday.

The statement said that an anti-infiltration operation was in progress in Uri sector, while in Gurez, armed intruders ran back leaving rucksacks behind.

The Army statement said the intruders were being provided active support, including covering fire (heavy calibre artillery) by Pakistani army posts on the LoC to assist them to enter the Kashmir valley.

With these four operations, the Army has thwarted six infiltration attempts along the LoC in less than a fortnight in north Kashmir.

On May 26, the Army had claimed to have killed two Pakistani Border Action Team (BAT) members who tried to infiltrate into the Uri sector in Baramulla district to carry out an attack on the soldiers.

Six more militants were killed in the same sector, the next day, when they attempted to sneak into the valley.

The Northern Command claimed that in the current year, 22 infiltration attempts have been foiled and 34 armed intruders have been eliminated along the LoC.

"Relentless operations by security forces have defeated desperate attempts by Pakistan and its agents to spread terror in Jammu and Kashmir during the holy month of Ramzan," the statement said.

One more militant was killed in Bandipora’s Gurez Sector on Saturday during a military operation, taking the death toll of militants in the past 96 hours to 13, according to the Army. One civilian was injured in a militant attack on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway in south Kashmir on Saturday morning.

One more armed infiltrator was killed in Gurez, 200 km north of Srinagar, along the Line of Control, the spokesperson added.

“The sinister design of the Pakistan Army to push in multiple groups of armed intruders across the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir continue to be defeated by pro-active operations being carried out on the LoC,” said a statement issued by the Udhampur-headquartered Northern Command.

The spokesman added that the troops have through relentless operations foiled infiltration bids in Gurez, Machil, Naugam and Uri sectors along the LoC, leading to the elimination of 13 intruders in the last 96 hours.

Seven intruders were killed in Kupwara’s Machil and Naugam Sectors on June 8. Five more intruders were killed in Uri Sector on Friday.

The Army said explosives, inflammable material, arms and ammunition were recovered from the slain intruders. “It indicates Pakistan’s designs to orchestrate high-profile terror incidents targeting innocent civilian population and security forces during the holy month of Ramazan,” the statement said.

Civilian injured
One civilian was critically injured as militants carried out an attack on a security patrol on the Srinagar-Jammu highway in the morning.

A police spokesman said the civilian, identified as Arif Ahmad, a resident of Bakshiabad, Anantnag, sustained bullet injuries around 5 a.m.

“The victim, who works at a construction company in Banihal. On the way to Banihal, unknown militants fired upon two security forces’ vehicles at Vesu. The fire missed the target and hit Mr. Arif’s car, injuring him in the back,” said a police spokesperson.

Around 20 empty cases of AK-47 ammunition was recovered from the spot. Meanwhile, no injuries were reported as militants hurled a grenade on the district police lines, Pulwama, in a pre-dawn attack.

Fierce exchange of mortar shelling broke out between Indian and Pakistani troops as the latter resorted to unprovoked ceasefire violation along the Line of Control in Krishna Ghati sector of Poonch district late Saturday evening.

With Pakistani troops firing 82mm and 120 mortars on the Indian side and the Indian troops equally retaliating, the shelling between the two sides was intense. The explosion of shells was audible even in Poonch town, locals said, adding that they see the sky lit with mortar shells.

The loss of property or casualty on the India side was not known, sources said. They attributed the shelling to continued unsuccessful attempts by Pakistan to push in armed terrorists into the state from across the border.

The shelling in KG sector comes close on the heels of Indian Army killing 13 terrorists trying to infiltrate into Kashmir from across the LoC. Last time, mortar shelling from across the LoC had been reported in KG sector on June 3.

The five militants who were killed in north Kashmir’s Uri sector on Line of Control on Friday had unique body-fitted improvised explosive devices (IEDs) indicating they were Fidayeens (suicide squad), army said on Sunday.

The army said that they found a huge quantity of arms and ammunition in search operations after the initial gun fight on June 9.

“In these search operations huge quantities of arms and ammunition have been recovered which includes five AK 47, two under barrel grenade launchers, large quantity of explosives, combat dresses, incendiary material, eatables with Pakistan markings and uniquely body fitted IEDs with timer mechanisms, all indicating that this was a Fidayeen group which was infiltration with the sinister plans to carry out gruesome attacks on an army camp or a civil installation in and around Uri,” said Brigadier YS Ahlawat in a media interaction at Uri Base, about 100 km from Srinagar.

He said that the alertness of army not only resulted in the elimination of this group but also ensured peace and tranquility in the valley which “this group wanted to vitiate in the holy month of Ramadan”.

“This is the fifth infiltration attempt that has been successfully eliminated by the army in last three days. The army continues to resolve to keep a strict vigil on LoC and foil all such nefarious designs of Pakistan abetted terrorists,” he said.

The Army on Friday had claimed it foiled an infiltration bid killing five militants in the Uri sector.

The Army’s northern command on Thursday had said that it has been tackling multiple infiltration bids along the LoC in north Kashmir in four sectors – Machhil, Naugam, Gurez and Uri. A total of 13 militants were killed in the four sectors since Wednesday morning.

Giving details of the Uri operation, Brigadier Ahlawat said the militants tried to infiltrate into Uri by exploiting the thick jungles on the LoC during the night.

“Alert army troops detected their movement and immediately engaged them in a firefight. After the initial fire fight, in a prolonged search operation which has lasted for two days in thick jungles and difficult terrain under inclement weather conditions,” he said.

He said that the group was from Lashkar-e-Taiba and was the second major operation after two members of Pakistan’s Border Action Team (BAT) were killed in Uri on May 26.

“We have seen in the recent days there has been a surge in the infiltration and with the abetment it is likely to continue,” Ahlawal said.

The attacks took place on 17th on Ramzan, which is observed as Yaum-ul-Badr in remembrance of a war won by prophet Muhammad 1400 years ago.

"We had inputs regarding escalation in violence on the occasion. That is why the damage is limited as alerts were issued in advance. There is minimum damage," Director General of Police S.P. Vaid said.

A red alert was sounded across the Valley.

The last one week has witnessed more than four grenade attacks in Valley, especially south Kashmir.

Zulfikar Majid, DH News Service, Srinagar, Jun 15 2017, 19:27 IST
A policeman was shot dead by unidentified militants in South Kashmir's Kulgam district on Thursday.

A police official said constable Shabir Ahmad Dar was shot outside his home in Bogund, Kulgam, 70 kms from here, by two pistol-borne militants. "Dar was referred to Srinagar hospital but unfortunately he succumbed to injuries on the way. He was posted with Special Operations Group (SOG) of J&K police and was currently on leave," he said.

The killing comes a day after Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) warned policemen to leave their jobs and join them. LeT commander Abu Ukasha in a video message had warned J&K cops to join them for the 'Kashmir cause.' "Why do you want win applause from (Prime Minister Narendra) Modi for killing your own brothers. You have to live and die with us only," he said.

However, no militant outfit claimed responsibility for the attack till evening. From the last few months, militants have time and again issued ing warnings to policemen “to quit and return home forthwith, otherwise be prepared to die.”

In March this year, after militants threatened families of several officers, especially in south Kashmir, the state police chief Shesh Pal Vaid had warned ultras that 'they too have families.'

"Militants should realise they too have families. Let them (militants) take this as a warning," Vaid said. “This is between police and terrorists and families should not be brought into this conflict. If the police start doing this (threatening), what will happen to their (militant) families.”

During last year's unrest, the families of policemen came under mob attacks in the valley after the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani. The homes of several policemen were vandalised by crowds after separatist groups named some officers, accusing them of killings and harassing people.
