Pakistan, the Next Software Hub?

No for banking. Last I checked, PayPal was willing to launch its service in Pakistan but State Bank wanted its share from Paypal so its still stuck there. Banking system is cr@p, my last foreign ramittence got stuck in the bank just because the old bank manager was changed and new one turned out to be a d!ck head. He just refused to credit the payment in my account just because the sender was some gora and the payment was above 100k. He had a gut feeling that this money was came due to some online betting or gambling. Even after giving him all the documented proofs about the source of that payment, knocking doors of the bank for 5 months I couldn't get my payment released.

Finally, I had to use my banking sources via my uncle who's high up in a bank, bad to bribe the manager and then got the payment cleared within few hours. In short, 5 - 6 month's time and energy was wasted for nothing.

Check the Estonia e-citizenship scheme. Think, it may help you.

Good luck but I see this sort of optimism in PAKISTAN media for over a decade.

  • Very sad and disturbing story again , clearly shows why Pakistan cannot be IT hub
  • A Banking system that scrutinizes , legal legit transactions demonstrates why economic progress is being hindered

  • Energy
  • Transparency/Justice/Consumer protection
  • Ease of doing Business

With out this no Hub or wheel cap can be setup no matter how much trumpet the politicians would blow
The user clearly indicates , he had to pay "a bribe", on a legitimate IT work a person did
On top of the high service charges Pakistani already pay for transferring money over

Government can say all the Bull crap they want - however with out a justice system that protect consumer rights for Transaction "Freely" with foreign clients , IT hub not possible

Only warm air coming out of politicians

How long it takes money to transfer in modern world (24-48 Hours)- with No Need to even go to bank , you log in to you bank account from home and check your money recieved successfully

Now how can you beat that ? level of efficiency

The only reason Pakistan made any strides were Musharraf was in power who was Pro IT and his time helped get IT started at corporate levels.

However the civilian governments do not understand the vital need for what drives IT resource to excellence or any corporation to excellence.

They can't even fix traditional working corporations in Pakistan. How would they understand the need for IT hub

Distributing Laptop does not equals IT , hub

100% agreed. It was mushy's time when IT industry got the boom, I remember I preferred Software Engineering over CA in 2005 - 06 just because it was the this new field had a lot of scope and charm, and I'm glad I made right decision.

If we didn't had mushy, chances are we would still be watching PTV and using 512 kbps internet.

24 - 48 hours is too much, paypal and skrill transfer payments instantly in your online account. Then it takes a couple of days max to withdraw from your online account to your bank account. But like I've said before, Paypal is not supported (above 90% foreign clients use and prefer Paypal because of its low cost and security) and skrill wire transfers have a lot of issues because of our banking system.

The future is bright, new brains are coming in rapidly and the IT industry is expanding many folds. But the facilities and support is pathetic. Our banking system is biggest hurdle, no support for Paypal, almost all the debit cards issued by our banks have local use (you can't buy anything using them online),

I can't agree enough with you on that.

pata nhn kia takleef hai Pakistani banking sector ko, no Paypal or viable alternative. Then you can't use any online payment service either as it has a fw problems of it's own in Pakistan.

Son of a banker? Just ask your Dad, what is paypal, or skrill, or payoneer (no disrespect intended)? Our banking system is a sh!t, and the banking staff don't have a clue what above terms are.

And online banking is not just the ability to check your funds, do account statements or transfer funds locally via a bank's website. Can you purchase a website (domain name) with your local bank's debit card from any top domain provider? I guess you don't have a clue what I'm talking about?

Do you use Payoneer or Paxum or Payza or any such service?

operating systems i believe were created to provide a simplified way to run newer programs without reprogramming the entire computer or parts of it... plus, assembly programming becomes tedious after a while... can you tell me how many instructions does a sun sparc or intel x386 have??
Not sure what and why you are asking
Spark - 3 to 32
i386 - 32

except for network data i/o, all external i/o is through visual means... i mean visual and not just optic... so all current i/o standards, right from rs-232c to the latest usb need not be used... translate that to making obsolete the capitalist factory lines producing interfaces for those standards, imagine the reassignment of people in those factories, imagine how many useless programmers will go out of jobs. :enjoy:
Probably many like you.
There is difference between application and hardware interaction and application and user interaction.
For enduser the User experience matters to make things happen using the awesome computing that you are talking about.

the os design has a new internet architecture too, simpler than the existing and based on peer-to-peer but will have bridge facility to connect to current one.

just two of the things to simplify computing.
Please read SDLC and STM methodology, current world is not built on some dream space, where you just do a format and reinstall things.

Just wondering if you have developed and supported any application that has seen life of 10yrs or more.

sure, and that must be the intent... but what the capitalist industry has done is mostly kept churning the same old complicated way of computing, not daring to radically innovate, giving people unnecessary usages ( specifically vid games and cell phones ) so that they can keep using the obsolete way of computing but with more "advanced" os and microprocessor... example, intel i9 or whichever is their latest processor... people spend their energies and money needlessly buying useless stuff.

Most moronic thought processing
If you dont see something that doest mean its not happening.
Secondly if you dont use that doesnt mean its unnecessary for others.

Finally Linux platform is not run buy some capitalist industry guy, its an opensource operating system, which has been ported when ever required. And probably its been ported for so many architecture that no other OS can come close to that.

And for your kind information, unlike other industries, Computer Industry is loyal only to innovation and not to any capitalist industry, if you dont innovate you cannot survive others will throw you out.

why?? won't application programs and newer application areas have come with a new os??
But if all the developers are busy in building OS, then who will build the newer applications :P

i was talking of future human explorations of space, specifically the two moons of mars, and whether linux ( however much "real time" ) can be relied upon to keep humans safe... presently, as far as i know, life-critical medical instruments don't run linux in whichever form.

Why do you think that when future human whould go to mars will be using a linux version of 2015 or older?
Obviously if they have plans for moons of mars, they will build all required infrastructure around it and that could include development and porting of Linux or it could be there custom system.

around year 2000 was a earlier version of qnx os 6 which could off a floppy drive and had all basic facilities, and it was so much more responsive and reliable than linux can ever be even now.

i got a qnx cd from pcquest magazine.
Somebody said same for DOS too two decade ago, unfortunately i dont see DOS anymore.

Until you can understand whats the difference between Linux as OS Platform and other generic OS, things will never make sense to you. Please dont look from point of view how it computes, but look it from point of view of how its implemented.

i must say, iot is a bad idea... hackers doing a ddos attack on your fridge ( even with qnx os installed ) will totally defeat the purpose of iot.

Early 1900's someone said same for automobiles, drivers are crashing into your home, society and its like letting a killer machine roaming freely in society, which can be turned hostile by anyone.
Going by your logic, we should have be using camels today to commute...

When you try to argue, please try to make sensible, its hard to explain things when its nonsense based on expectations missing realities.

Finally its Android (based out of Linux) is running and ruling smart phone market and we all know what happen to Blackberry (Owner of QNX and made blackberry 10 based on it)

I understand what you are saying. But have you noticed, you and others who follow IK.....are SO negative on everything???? Things have started to move in the right direction. If you don't like how bad it is in Pakistan, may be you should take your dad's money and invest and live in the UK....like every other Rich Pakistani including IK and his family who have dual allegiance, to Pakistan and to the Queen Mother!!

Where were you in the 90's, in the 2000's and in 2008' and 2012??? How come no one's seen you complain then? Now IK comes in, hates NS and spreads that negative sentiment into everone's head.

A broken system of 70 years, will take some time. One thing I can tell you with experience and by putting my money on it, is that if IK or any of the other people had been in power, not even 20% of the work and investments that have come in, would've come in. So appreciate the work and wait till they get to everything else.

Paypal and payneer don't make or break a country of 200 million people. The users of such systems are .005% out of 200 million strong population. So OBVIOUSLY, the government would focus on the masses first and then the 1 and the 2% high maintenance people like yourself!! Support your system, all these things will come and they have to.

Dude, do you have IK coming in your dreams or something?

What the fck does IK have to do with this?

That man simply commented on the general system in our country, everyone acknowledges that, not only PTI supporters. Nobody blames current government for it.

But you somehow feel the need to butt in EVERYTIME with this IK cr@p.

It's another flaw in the many flaws in our country, not because of IK.

You definitely have IK phobia.

You'd be better off worrying about Donald Trump if you ask me!

in india in computing field specifically...

1. people are expected to unquestioningly follow western standards in programming even if they are unnecessarily complicated, whether this be in c language or java or javascript etc... this dissuades people from using innovative and simpler methods.

There is nothing called western standards in programing these days, innovation occurs all across the globe, people put there papers. For example C was standardized by ANSI in 1989 and later by ISO, by the way ISO has 163 countries as members from across the globe.

By nature languages dont control your imagination and creativity, if there is something a particular language is unable to do perfectly, then probably that particular language was not made for the given scenario.

2. people lack the confidence to ask questions and simplify things for themselves... unless one asks questions, how can one decide if something is necessary or useless.
Very generic and microscopic point of view.
The rise of computer industry at large globally is because people wanted to simplify things for themselves.
And Indians working in the industry are working towards making that happen.

3. people are intellectually lazy and will exert effort only for salaries and not for the joy of designing something... this makes people constantly ask "oh, why reinvent the wheel??" people should understand that designing a os in india is not reinventing the wheel but a honorable intellectual pursuit.

Once again you are stuck at OS ..he he he he ...

4. undeniably, indian life is unnecessarily complicated and this translates also into usage of complicated but obsolete technology.
What an analogy sirji ....ha ha ha ..

With an optimist target of 500 MN USD in 2015, you guys are far far away from being into any of serious competition forget about being a hub. Bing a hub is not an easy thing. You need a lots of telent and infrastructure.

Do you use Payoneer or Paxum or Payza or any such service?

I've been working in this field since 2006, tried all the internet service providers from 56kbps scratch cards to dedicated corporate DSL connections that are available in Pakistan till date. Similarly, I've tried all the payment gateways including the 3 you've mentioned above. I've last used Payoneer as recent as last week.

Pakistani Banks were pioneers in 60 in alot of ideas , and its sorta shameful that now our own citizens can't get
funds for their "legal" work done or get money paid to their businesses

Really a moment to stand and thing in the Banking sector mean while every where else in world

Banks are promoting same day or even half day quick transfer across globe and we can't get money released for a IT worker , legit worker with documented proof unless he has to pay a bribe .....

A moment to really wonder , from Banking Sector in Pakistan how much $$$$ they are loosing due to these
problems forcing people to do their transactions with OUTSIDER companies

its his personal achievement, India didnt provide him anything. nonetheless a great achievement.

also Pakistan provides quality IT solutions, comparatively. In my experience. but ofcourse Indians are hard working and offers solutions at cheaper rates.
