The Pakistan team management has requested the International Cricket Council (ICC) for additional security, after clashes between fans and spectators running onto the field during the Men in Green’s match against Afghanistan on Sunday in Leeds.

Police were forced to intervene as violent clashes between rival supporters, outside the stadium and in the stands, marred the World Cup match between the two sides.

After Pakistan’s nail-biting three-wicket win over Afghanistan, the losing team’s supporters also ran onto the field in a bid to attack the Pakistan players but security staff intervened to avoid any mishap from happening.

The Pakistan team were also restricted to their dressing room, after the conclusion of the match, due to lack of security and fear of more violent incidents. Later when additional security personnel arrived, after a complain was filed by the team management, the team was safely escorted from the stadium.

Political relations between the south Asian neighbours have been marked by years of distrust and blame.

Eyewitnesses told AFP there were clashes in the stands at the start of the match, which spread outside the ground until security officers intervened.

"Thanks to the intervention from security personnel the situation did not go out of control," said Ahmed Zai, who is from the Pakistani city of Peshawar, but lives in nearby Bradford.

A Pakistani journalist was also attacked by the crowd, stopping him from shooting video.

A statement from West Yorkshire police said: "At 11:55 am today (1055 GMT) police received reports of some trouble outside the ground linked to people trying to get in. Officers attended to disperse the group without any issues and remained on patrol in the area."

The International Cricket Council said in a statement: "We are aware of some scuffles among a minority of fans and are currently working with the venue security team and the local police force, West Yorkshire Police, to ensure there are no further incidents."

It added: "We do not condone any sort of political messages at the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup and will work with West Yorkshire police to deal with and understand why this has happened and to ensure it does not happen again."

The 17,000-capacity stadium was packed for the match, with Pakistan fans outnumbering Afghanistan supporters.

. . . .
Britain has conspicuously failed in providing the required security. We should make the list of incidents and keep a track of it.
  1. 15 Afghan cricket supporters attack a Pakistani (yes he was alone)
  2. A politically malicious flyer flying above the stadium ...How did it even happen without British authorities knowing it?
  3. Afghan spectators trying to enter the stadium without tickets and creating disturbance & threatening the people but the security did not take any appropriate actions
  4. The most serious of all was a Afghani man attacking a Pakistani player, a total failure of the security
It is the responsibility of the hosts to provide the security and these egregious lapses in the security point to a collusion or criminal negligence of the British authorities.

Remarkable. This was full scale hooliganism, not seen since Russia played England in a football match years ago. Such activities make headline news and bring shame upon the sport. ECB is doing everything it can to downplay this as minor "scuffles". They are covering this up as Pakistan is the victim of the aggression. Next time if Pak fans strike back, watch as they call for us to be deported. There is some weird politics going on here. British press are actually letting this slide by unnoticed. They are actually supporting these Afghan pricks just because Pakistanis are their target. Talk about cutting your nose off to spite your face.

No, in this they are self-sufficient. Do you know the only that did not recognise Pakistan as a state after independence -> Afghanistan.
Afghanistan is not homogeneous country, there are Afghans, Tajiks, Uzbeks, Hazaras. They liberal ones who used to support USSR and India were against Pakistan. The Pashtuns living along the durand line were not that hostile because they had relatives in Pakistan i.e. KPK , FATA and Baluchistan. The only period during which there was total peace on Pak-Afghan border was under the Afghan Taliban .

Gunda gardi India say seeki ya pakistaniyo se. Pakistan still holds 3m Afghans. Some of the afghan players have spend their early years in Peshawar and their families r still residing in Pakistan. ( Rashid khan, Mohammed Nabi)

What a cheap comment, why drag India unnecessarily into this thread.
Coz Afghanis didnt react the same to your team...Wonder why?!

But sure I will take it back...

True yet this is the behaviour of the supporters not the team mates!

But the Afghan players are just as bad - it would take a new thread to document the aggressive anti-Pak behaviour of the Afghan team. Why shouldn't the Afghan players as staff condemn this behaviour in any case? Do you think ANY nation or club would stay silent over such an act? The Afghan team should come out and say "these fans don't represent us" . There should be lifetime bans.

But why drag India, Afghans lost the game not only against India but also other teams(Australlia,England). There were no clashes, even the India Pakistan match went off smoothly though it was one sided. On TV I have seen India and Pakistani fans sitting together and cheering their teams.

100%Agreed, this is not the behavior of the supporters and the Afghan players, even Afghanistan skipper Gulbadin Naib issued a plea to supporters after his team’s three-wicket defeat by Pakistan at the World Cup on Saturday was marred by clashes in the stands and outside the stadium.

Provide them the required security. I thought Bangla fans were the worst. Now there is a new king.
i never seen any south asian teams playing cricket for the last several decades doing this kinda violent stuffs except some violent incidents in india.
but this afgahns showed again that they are stone age people.

Exactly, there were no clashes but they misbehave to the hand that feeds them (i.e. 3 million Afghani in Pakistan and not that many in india...yet :tsk: )

If not the supporters then who? :o:

I said it is the supporters...no one is blaming the players! :)
