Pakistan Super League (PSL) Third Edition-News, Updates and Discussions

the final was boring last time by "baandar phurti" of najam sethi. it would have been a much better match in UAE. the venue of the matches must be finalized with all the foreign players before selection. there will always be many players who will prefer their lives over money.
Well they wanted to send a msg to world that cricket is once again possible in Pakistan without any fear of terrorism it was a right decision imo.

You Know When PCB Was Searching For A New Name For Multan Team I Was So Hoping For Multan Malangs. And Their Song Be Newer Version of Na Cher Malanga Nu That Would Have Been Awesome. It Would Also Make Sense Since Multan Is City of Auliya

.
Watch out for this guy MIR HAMZA - of Quetta Gladiators.

He is an absolute stunner.

.
Disappointed to not see Imran Nazir in Multan's setup , him and Salman Butt would have been a true captivating story for Season 3 of League

One player making recovery after issue with Injuries and other of course for off the field ban.
Everyone deserves a chance however we will not see both players with Multan Sultans

I was looking forward to see Imran Nazir pick up the bat one last time a one last Hurrah sort of speak

Also was quite disappointed with the Lahore team , they still do not feel having a good bowling attack is worth spending money for as they truely lack any decent bowling options. They will certainly be again known as the team that scores big runs and then can't defend the score

Karachi is 100% favourites due to their absolute shining bowling attack Amir/Mitches + Afridi and Imad Wasim

But Gladiators / Islamabad / Zalmi will offer great resistance

Would be nice to see Zalmi's fan reaction , seeing Afridi now with Kings

And of course Misbah Ul Haq !!! Back in Action not done yet

Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2017 players’ draft is taking place in Lahore.

Six franchises, including new entrants Multans Sultans, are picking players for their 16-man squads.

According to the PSL rules, the teams were allowed to retain nine players from their previous squads.

Hence, they will be picking six players today, plus four supplementary players each.

A total of 501 players are available for selection for all six franchises.

Who said what?

Wasim Akram: “Multan Sultans will merge as one of the top teams. We have full faith in Shoaib Malik’s (captain of Multan Sultans) abilities.”

Johan Botha will be assistant coach for Multan Sultans, while Mohammad Waseem will be the batting coach.

Salman Iqbal: “Many people ask us why we couldn’t bring AB de villers on board. It’s tough to sign those who are not in the draft pool. We can only pick what’s available.

Rana Fawad, owner of Lahore Qalandars: “Return of cricket to Pakistan is great. I’m always very happy at the time of drafts. We’re going to put all our efforts this time and won’t disappoint. Even if I have to bat and Aqib has to bowl to ensure success…we will do that.”

Aqib Javed: “We want to make such a team that makes Fawad bhai happy not just in draft but also on the day of the final. There were many injuries. It depends on a lot of factors not just big name players.”

Moin Khan: “We’ve lost twice in the final but want to do one better this time. Pitches are never made bad intentionally. Conditions shouldn’t be blamed. Pros must be able to handle that. Sarfraz has been performing since forever. He is very clear in his mind which is why everyone follows him. He is lucky because he is brave. We will try our best, but competition will be tough even more so because there is a new team. Pitches here and in UAE are almost same so there shouldn’t be many problems.”

Owner of Quetta Gladiators Nadeem Umar: “I want to congratulate to PCB and all franchises for taking this brand so far. I want to specially mention Sir Viv. We want to give chance to new players but unfortunately we can’t always do that.”

Zaheer Abbas: We are trying to make a team of youngsters.

PCB Chairman Najam Sethi

“A very warm welcome to the sixth franchise, Multan Sultans. I hope Wasim Akram will take them to the finish line and cross it.

“We will try to hold the PSL3 final in Karachi. The plans are already being worked on. People who think this was not possible, we will answer them with a final in Karachi.”

Lynn, Imran top picks at player draft for expanded PSL
November 13, 2017

LAHORE: Multan Sultans skipper Shoaib Malik addresses the gathering as team director Wasim Akram looks on during the PSL player draft ceremony on Sunday.—White Star

LAHORE: Explosive Australian batsman Chris Lynn and South Africa leg-spinner Imran Tahir were the top picks of the player draft for the third season of the Pakistan Super League here on Sunday.

While Lahore Qalandars and Multan Sultans picked their top players in the first round, it was Islamabad United along with Lahore that finished looking menacing, on paper at least, given the depth of their squads.

Lahore snapping up Lynn meant the potentiality of a destructive opening pair for the franchise of Brendon McCullum and Lynn. They don’t just have the top set, but the bottom half too with arguably the best T20 bowlers in Sunil Narine and Mustafizur Rahman, who they picked on Sunday. All-rounder Mitchell McClenaghan, who opted for the T20 route, joins the squad as their supplementary player with Angelo Mathews.

Luke Ronchi, the New Zealand wicket-keeper/batsman who had retired from international cricket earlier in the year, was snapped up by Islamabad United, who have all bases as good as covered. They have a robust middle order boasting of the likes of J.P. Duminy and Misbah-ul-Haq supported by strong hitters to follow where Fahim Ashraf and Andre Russell slot in.

Shadab Khan has proven his mettle in the shorter formats while Mohammad Sami will be the leader of Islamabad’s attack. All they really needed was a solid opener to partner with Ronchi at the top, and they picked Sam Billings, who can bat at the top of the order. In the eventuality of them requiring a back-up, they have more than an able one in Alex Hales.

Multan Sultans, the latest entrants, were seeking a spinner who would slot in seamlessly into the XI and given Imran’s recent record, including in the IPL earlier in the year, it was a no-brainer for them, after having snapped up Shoaib Malik, who has been named skipper of the new franchise, Kieron Pollard and Kumar Sangakkara as a part of the pre-draft last month.

Luke Wright, who played for Quetta Gladiators in the first two seasons, will represent the Karachi Kings in the upcoming season, as will Colin Munro, but due to a question over his availability for the entire season, he was snapped up as a supplementary player. The side, however, has as many as seven front-line bowlers in the squad, which could come back to cost them eventually.

Pakistan opener Ahmed Shehzad, who belonged to the Platinum round was relegated two levels and only picked in the gold by Multan. Peshawar Zalmi, who announced that their side will be led by Darren Sammy, signed on Dwayne Bravo — which was their biggest signing for the draft. They also roped in Tamim Iqbal and Evin Lewis, albeit as supplementary players.

Runners-up of the 2017 season, Quetta Gladiators, in addition to big-hitters like Kevin Pietersen and Rilee Rossouw present in their side, drafted in all-rounders of the calibre of Shane Watson and West Indies T20 captain Carlos Brathwaite.

Towards the end though, Lahore ran out of budget and couldn’t partake in the fourth round of the supplementary draft, while Karachi decided to pick a player at the end of their talent hunt program, which effectively meant that they would have to pick from the emerging players’ pool.

Among the emerging players picked — a system through which the young Shadab rose to prominence — Saad Ali stood out after being picked by Quetta after being the top-scorer in the ongoing Quaid-I-Azam Trophy so far with 755 runs for United Bank Limited. Sahibzada Farhan, picked by Islamabad is also a promising prospect, having led Faisalabad to victory in the National T20 Cup with a 52-ball 76 on Saturday.

Each team now has a squad of 20, having been given a salary cap of $1.2 million.

Supplementary rounds were held for those players who were not available for the entire season. The franchises could also call upon them for those not be available, which could come into the picture if some of the players refused to travel to Pakistan.

The following were the picks:

PLATINUM ROUND — Lahore Qalandars: Chris Lynn; Islamabad United: J.P. Duminy; Karachi Kings: Colin Ingram; Quetta Gladiators: Shane Watson; Peshawar Zalmi: Dwayne Bravo; Multan Sultans: Imran Tahir.

DIAMOND ROUND — Islamabad: Luke Ronchi; Lahore: Mustafizur Rahman; Karachi: Mitchell Johnson; Quetta: Carlos Brathwaite; Peshawar: Tamim Iqbal; Multan: Darren Bravo.

GOLD ROUND — Karachi: Luke Wright; Islamabad: Fahim Ashraf; Peshawar: Hammad Azam; Quetta: Rahat Ali; Lahore: Bilal Asif; Multan: Ahmed Shehzad.

SILVER ROUND 2 — Lahore: Sohail Akhtar; Islamabad: Zafar Gohar; Peshawar; Taimur Sultan; Quetta: Saad Ali; Karachi: Tabish Khan; Multan: Nicholas Pooran.

EMERGING PLAYERS ROUND 1 — Lahore: Shaheen Shah Afridi; Islamabad: Sahibzada Farhan; Karachi: Mohammad Irfan Jr; Quetta: Saud Shakeel; Peshawar: Sameen Gul; Multan: Abdullah Shafiq.

EMERGING PLAYERS ROUND 2 — Lahore retain Ghulam Mudassar; Islamabad retain Hussain Talat; Karachi: Hasan Mohsin; Quetta: Mohammad Hassaan Khan; Peshawar: Ibtisam Sheikh; Multan: Saif Badar.

SUPPLEMENTARY ROUND 1 — Lahore: Angelo Mathews; Islamabad: Alex Hales; Karachi: Colin Munro; Quetta: Jason Roy; Peshawar: Andre Fletcher, Multan: Hardus Viljoen.

SUPPLEMENTARY ROUND 2: Lahore: Mitchell McClenaghan; Peshawar: Evin Lewis, Karachi: Eoin Morgan; Quetta: Rashid Khan (partially available); Islamabad: David Willey; Multan: Umar Gul.

SUPPLEMENTARY ROUND 3 — Lahore: Gulraiz Sadaf; Islamabad; Mohammad Hasan; Karachi: Saifullah Khan Bangash; Quetta: Mohammad Azam Khan; Peshawar: Khalid Usman; Multan: Umar Siddique.

SUPPLEMENTARY ROUND 4: Lahore: no budget; Islamabad: Mohammad Hasnain; Karachi will pick at the end of their talent hunt program and will have to be from emerging players category; Quetta: Faraz Ahmed Khan; Peshawar: Mohammad Arif; Multan: Ross Whiteley.

Analysis: PSL3 sides as balanced as ever

KARACHI: The cast members have been decided. The faces that will light up the third edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) have been picked by their respective sides. And as had been the case going into the first two editions of the league, there is very little to choose from between the sides — six, this time around, rather than the previous two editions’ five.

Multan Sultans may be the new kids on the block but write them off at your own risk. Their canniest signing may have been that of bringing Wasim Akram into their backroom staff. The legendary left-arm pacer instantly brought not only the star power that can attract all the best players but also the invaluable knowledge of how to win the league, having done so with Islamabad United in the first edition.

Skipper Shoaib Malik leads a side that boasts a staggering amount of experience in the likes of Kumar Sangakkara, Imran Tahir, Sohail Tanvir, Ahmad Shahzad and Keiron Pollard. The team may be new, but the players wearing their colours certainly are not.

Add to that the potential of an all-Pakistan pace attack comprising of Muhammad Irfan, Junaid Khan, Umar Gul and Tanvir, and Multan Sultans may well be both the dark horse and the neutrals’ favourite.

Peshawar Zalmi won the last edition in front of a jubilant Gaddafi Stadium so it comes as little surprise that they have retained the core of their side. After all, why fix what isn’t broke?

Franchises finalise line-ups for PSL3

Shahid Afridi’s departure for Karachi Kings leaves a huge gap but the likes of skipper Darren Sammy and experienced stalwarts Mohammad Hafeez, Dwayne Bravo and Kamran Akmal are all more than capable of filling it; at least in terms of explosive hitting, if not in terms of crowd popularity.

In Hasan Ali they have arguably the finest limited-overs bowler in the world, in Shakibal Hasan arguably the world’s finest all-rounder.

Peshawar may have more match-winners than any other PSL team and are therefore the most dangerous team on their day.

After reaching both finals, Quetta Gladiators surely cannot be labelled the plucky underdogs anymore; even if they are yet to get their hands on the prized trophy.

Sarfraz Ahmed has proven himself to be one of the canniest leaders in limited-overs cricket and will be quietly confident of going one better, having acquired the services of hard-hitting all-rounders Shane Watson and Carlos Brathwaite. Yet, with the hit-and-miss nature of those two gentlemen, Quetta may have left themselves a little too reliant on a 37-year-old Kevin Pietersen. Rilee Rossouw and Anwar Ali may well be capable of providing some firepower in the middle and death overs but neither play international cricket any longer.

On paper, once again, Quetta look like one of the weakest teams. Perhaps fittingly, considering their tendency to punch above their perceived weight is what lends such charm to the PSL’s most liked team.

Karachi Kings have a brand new skipper in Imad Wasim and a brand new champion in Shahid Afridi, but many would be salivating over the prospect of Muhammad Amir and Mitchell Johnson — the past and present of left-arm pacers — sharing the new ball.

Sentiment aside though, the signing of a 36-year-old Johnson may be ill-advised considering the conditions he will be working with; even if his limited-overs record in the UAE is quite impressive.

Babar Azam has shown he prefers the 50-over game to the other two formats but by shoring up one end, he can provide his batting partners the license to free their arms.

Yet it is hard to shake off the feeling that the Kings have, at best, stood still rather than move forward. Replacing Malik with Afridi would be an extremely inadvisable move in most people’s books right now and the departure of Pollard leaves more pressure on Ravi Bopara to start hitting early.

Islamabad United had quite the fall from grace in the second edition — going from first to fourth — and their aging squad was generally considered to the reason.

Faheem Ashraf, Luke Ronchi and JP Duminy are the biggest names to come into the side but Misbahul Haq may once again be relying on his bowlers to deliver the wins. Being able to call on the likes of Rumman Raees, Shadab Khan, Samuel Badree and Andre Russel surely makes his job that much easier though.

Last and least, at least judging by the two editions so far, are Lahore Qalandars; once again boasting a fearsome squad that has the familiar questions marks of inconsistency surrounding it.

Brendon McCullum is a T20 captain like no other in the world and the bottom side in both editions will fear no one. A batting line-up that also includes Umar Akmal, Chris Lynn, Fakhar Zaman, Aamir Yamin and Sunil Narine mean the only way to stop this side will be wickets.

When Lahore play, the runs are sure to once again flow but such is the nature of all those batsmen that scores over 200 and under 100 are both likely scenarios. The bowling department, once again, looks a little weak for Lahore.

Yasir Shah and Sohail Khan can both take wickets but are often expensive, which puts a lot of pressure on Mustafizur Rehman and Sunil Narine to prevent the leakage of runs.

It would be a huge surprise if they fail to make the play-offs, but then again, it was a huge surprise when they failed the first two times.

As things stand though, PSL’s decision to go with an NFL-style draft system is paying dividend. There is very little to separate the sides and as Quetta and Lahore have shown at opposing ends of the spectrum, it is very hard to predict where the teams finish.

Minute details, once again, will decide the fate of these six teams; may the best one win.
